My Favorite Airbnb: A Panoramic Penthouse in a Medieval Tuscan Town

In a country with as much rich and easily accessible history as Italy, it can be hard to know where to start. Early this summer, my girlfriend and I planned a week-long Italian jaunt, beginning in Rome and winding our way up to Verona, with a stop in the medieval city of Siena to see the Palio—a famed, centuries-old biannual horse race. In search of a window into a different (less crowded) side of Italy's history, I took to perusing Airbnb listings in Pitigliano, a southern Tuscan town a Pisan friend had recommended. I stumbled across the Attico Panoramico Nell'antico Borgo—a panoramic penthouse in the ancient city. Lying halfway between Rome and Florence, this apartment was supposedly in one of the most beautiful spots in the region. Looking at photos had me giddy with excitement, but nothing could have prepared me for the sight that opened up before me as our tiny rented Fiat whipped around the hairpin turns of the Tuscan hills and Pitigliano came into view.
While the archaeological record shows evidence of a pre-Roman Etruscan town on the same site, the current incarnation of Pitigliano has existed since around the 11th century, when it quickly rose to prominence as a regional cultural and political capital. Known as the 'Citta del Tufo' in reference to the ubiquitous volcanic tuff stone used in its construction, Pitigliano is perhaps the quintessential Tuscan hilltop town: a labyrinth of clifftop walls, towers, houses, and churches that could easily have been ripped from the background of a Bellini painting. After parking outside the city walls—no cars allowed in the centro storico—we traversed the ancient stone bridge that led to the old city, which is perched on top of a rocky outcropping (a strategic decision dating back to the days when the town regularly found itself at war with its neighbors). Despite (or perhaps because of) its imposing defensive exterior, the inside of the town is peaceful; its tiny size concealing a seemingly endless maze of winding alleys and idyllic squares, strewn with marble fountains, pots of flowers, and stray cats.

After picking our way through the stone streets to the central Piazza della Repubblica, we spotted the ancient stone building we were to call home. Inside, under the huge beams of the gabled ceiling, the apartment seemed as labyrinthine and storied as the town itself, with each of its cozy rooms containing a treasure trove of tasteful, eclectic decor, from original oil paintings to Etruscan-style pottery. Small, quirky, and full of life, it's the kind of space that could easily feel cramped or cluttered if it weren't so thoughtfully designed at every turn. A wealth of south-facing windows filled the home with warm Tuscan sunlight, from the delightfully spacious king bedroom (there's also a charming daybed in the adjoining room that sleeps a third traveler) to the compact but attractive kitchen. As pleasant as the interiors were, we spent most of our time at the highlight of the penthouse: its two (two!) clay-tiled terraces. Stepping outside, I understood why they called it the 'panoramic penthouse', with views across the entire town and down into the forested ravine below.

As Hilton Head Island Airport expands, Savannah/Hilton Head adds four new gates

As crews at Hilton Head Island Airport continue building a terminal expansion, nearby Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is adding more space as well. SAV is adding four new gates to its existing 367,395-square-foot facility, bumping its total gate count from 15 to 19. The terminal expansion will add 43,735 square feet of space, including a large common area, restrooms, and space for new tenants. The idea is to create more room in an airport that has seen growing demand from passengers. 'We need it right now. Our traffic has gone up exponentially over the past six, seven, eight years; we've surpassed where we were with covid,' Lori Lynah, the airport's senior director of marketing and air service development, said. Last year, the airport ushered through about 4.1 million visitors, up from 3.9 million in 2023, 2.8 million in 2021, and about 3 million in 2019, statistics show. More than 2 million of those passengers traveled by air between January and June of 2025, and Lynah said she expects the numbers to continue to grow. The passenger base will also likely become less leisure-travel heavy, she said, thanks to developments like the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America that opened a few months ago about 30 miles west of Savannah. Currently, leisure travelers account for 65-70% of SAV's customers, Lynah said. 'I think in the next year we'll see that change a little bit because of more folks moving to the region, and because of Hyundai suppliers, not just the company themselves,' she said. TSA and parking expansion SAV also recently expanded its security checkpoint to six lanes, and added about 1,000 new parking spaces across two asphalt surface lots. The airport now has four surface parking areas, an economy garage, and a terminal garage, for a total of about 6,000 spaces. A new parking garage is currently in the design stages, Lynah said, and the airport is actively seeking out new routes; Lynah said she hopes direct flights to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Toronto, and the United Kingdom are on the horizon. Spirit Airlines is set to launch at SAV with daily service to Newark, New Jersey, Aug. 14. Flights to Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Nashville, Tennessee; and Detroit, Michigan are scheduled to begin in October. Meanwhile, the Hilton Head Island Airport, located on the north end, is in the middle of an expansion project that will more than triple the size of the terminal, said Jon Rembold, Beaufort County airports director. The expansion will increase the facility's total square footage from about 20,000 to roughly 67,000 by early next year; after that, crews will renovate the airport's existing facility. HHH hasn't been updated since the 1990s, Rembold said. It needed repairs for a while, but a planned 2021 expansion was put on hold because of interest rates. Only prop planes flew into the airport until 2018, when the runway was expanded to accommodate larger jets. The impact was almost instant, Rembold said; passenger traffic went up from 54,000 passengers in 2017 to 79,000 in 2018 to about 233,000 by 2019, Rembold said. Pilot charged with DUI after being removed from plane at Savannah-Hilton Head airport 'The runway project changed everything. It doubled the capacity, and we saw the response right away,' he said. The new terminal building, which is attached to the old one, will house security screening and all three of the airport's gates upon completion. The gates will be roomier, and the building will have more space for retail tenants. HHH is also adding jet bridges; currently, all boarding is done on-ground. In the old building, which will be renovated after the new one is complete, visitors will find airline ticketing counters and offices, baggage carousels, rental car desks, and a grand hall, or an open space where the Transportation Security Administration line is right now. The total cost of the renovations will be around $85 million, Rembold said. Phase one, which is currently underway, will cost about $43.8 million, with funding from the Federal Aviation Administration, the state, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and the airport itself. 'The purpose is to accommodate the folks using the airport. Our numbers have been pretty steady for a couple of years, but we need to meet the Hilton Head Island standard, really,' Rembold said. 'We have so many locals and visitors flying out of here, and the old building was not meeting the standard.' Solve the daily Crossword

Avoid TSA Headaches: How to Pack Your Carry-On the Right Way

Summer is vacation season for millions of Americans. Once you've finished planning your trip, it's time to start preparing to head out. Traveling can be stressful, whether it's your first trip or you're used to the TSA security line. Taking the time to properly prepare means that when it's time to hop on your flight, you're able to enjoy the experience instead of stressing over the details. If you really want to be secure, finding the right carry-on luggage can make all the difference. A carry-on bag ensures you have your entertainment and snacks during the flight, and all the essentials at your destination, even if your checked luggage gets lost. Items like passports, prescriptions, electronics, toiletries, cash and clothes are must-haves when it comes to carry-ons. (Believe me, packing extra clothes in mine saved me when my checked bag was lost on the way to London.) Following Transportation Security Administration guidelines for each major US airline is also a must. Doing a little research on the latest rules and regulations can help you ace the experience without getting held up. You can't control what TSA officials confiscate, but you can control what you pack and how you pack it. Here's how to pack your carry-on bag efficiently for any flight, so you can breeze through TSA security lines. For more travel tips, explore these travel essentials you need for every vacation and then take a look at this travel checklist. You should also read about the new Real ID requirement to get through airport security. The best carry-on travel bags Before you start packing, you'll have to find the right carry-on bag. Here are a few important things to keep in mind. What size carry-on should you get? The first and most important aspect to think about is size. Federal Aviation Administration regulations say carry-on items can't exceed dimensions of 22 by 14 by 9 inches, though you might find an inch or two of difference depending on the airline. The general rule is that it must fit under your seat or in the overhead enclosed storage compartment on the plane. Here's a quick reference for size limits for the most popular US airlines. Carry-on items by airline Airline Cabin Maximum size Air Canada All 55 x 40 x 23 cm; 21.5 x 15.5 x 9 in Alaska Airlines All 55.88 x 35.56 x 22.86 cm; 22 x 14 x 9 in American Airlines All 56 x 36 x 23 cm; 22 x 14 x 9 in British Airways All 56 x 45 x 25 cm; 22 x 18 x 10 in Delta Air Lines All 56 x 35 x 23 cm; 22 x 14 x 9 in Frontier Airlines All 60.96 x 40.64 x 25.4 cm; 24 x 16 x 10 in Hawaiian Airlines All 55.9 x 35.5 x 22.9 cm; 22 x 14 x 9 in JetBlue Airways All 55.88 x 35.56 x 22.86 cm; 22 x 14 x 9 in Southwest Airlines All 60.9 x 40.6 x 25.4 cm; 24 x 16 x 10 in Spirit Airlines All 56 x 46 x 25 cm; 22 x 18 x 10 in United Airlines All 56 x 35 x 22 cm; 22 x 14 x 9 in Carry-ons should have an easy access tech compartment If you decide to bring electronics like a laptop, iPad, Kindle or other tablet on board, your carry-on should ideally have a separate, padded compartment for secure packing. Be sure these compartments are easily accessible, since at security checkpoints, the TSA will require you to remove your electronic devices and place them in the plastic X-ray tray. Make sure your carry-on is comfortable on your back or shoulder Remember, you'll need to lug your carry-on bag or suitcase across the airport and down long corridors, and you might even need to run with it so you don't miss your connection. Consider whether you need padded handles or cushioned straps or a backpack or a rolling suitcase for ease. The general rule is that all carry-ons must fit under your seat or in the overhead enclosed storage compartment on the plane. Getty Images How to pack your carry-on the right way Though what to pack in your carry-on ultimately depends on your preferences, there are a few guidelines for the best way to pack your luggage: Pack items in layers (shoes one layer, clothes one layer, electronics one layer, etc.). Pack the things you'll use the least at the bottom of the bag. Keep most of your valuables in your carry-on luggage, and store them in side compartments or safely padded around other items. Place valuables at the bottom of your bag, away from the opening. Keep your wallet, credit cards and cash in an inner pocket so they'll be harder to steal. Pack a small, separate bag for toiletries. (Liquids, gels and aerosols packed in carry-on must follow the 3-1-1 liquids rule: 3.4 ounces or less per container; all liquids must fit in one quart size, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; one bag per passenger.) Roll your clothes tightly to save space in your luggage. Sometimes you lose your luggage. It happens. Though it's frustrating, it's important to pack a spare set of clothes (including socks and underwear!) in your carry-on to hold you over until your bags are found and returned. Pack clothing that can easily be rolled up and put in the bottom of your bag. Rolled clothing can save space in your tight bag or suitcase. Getty Images Essential items for your carry-on bag There's some items that are just better in your carry-on luggage. If you do decide to check a bag, be sure to keep these items with you on the flight. Most of these carry-on essentials are items that would be hard to replace or purchase when you get to your destination. Prescriptions and medications Contact lenses or glasses Valuables like jewelry, wallets, passports, IDs and boarding passes Cameras and smartphones Entertainment like tablets, books and laptops Headphones to watch TV or movies if a longer flight Chargers for electronics Printed itinerary, or hotel and flight confirmations Explore this complete guide for essential travel items you may forget to pack. Place your larger electronics in secure yet easily accessible compartments, since you'll need to pull them out at TSA security checkpoints. Getty Images What you should never pack in your carry-on bag The TSA has specific guidelines covering which items are banned from flights, and the agency takes those rules very seriously. In 2023 alone, the TSA screened more than 858 million passengers and crew members nationwide, and it confiscated a record number of firearms (6,737) and many other items. TSA policy says that individuals carrying weapons, especially loaded firearms, can face fines or criminal penalties. These are some of the most commonly confiscated items: Firearms Fireworks Box cutters, utility knives and razors Bats, clubs and blades Swiss Army knives If in doubt, always refer to the TSA's guidelines on packing for flights, to ensure you have safe and easy travels. If you're planning a vacation soon and are stressed about packing or preparing, CNET has plenty of resources to help. Get ready for your next trip with these hacks and tips:
