Sandakan retain MSSS tennis crown

Kota Kinabalu: Sandakan successfully defended their overall title in the MSSS (Sabah School Sport Council) tennis event in Sandakan where Sandakan the District Tennis Technical Manager Amir Bukhari Mohd Razali, will be retiring this year. The Sandakan team took home two gold, two silver and three bronze medals to top the medal tally. The gold medal winners were Shawn Alfie Silvester (Boys Under-18) and Scharllotte Avryll Silvester (Girls Under-15). Silvers from Wafi Adhwa Baharudin (Boys Under-12) and Braylen Odell Johannes (Boys Under-18), while the bronze medals delivered by Muhammad Ryan Rayzan Ronney (Boys Under-15), Chua Jiu Ngan (Boys Under-12) and Sandra Allysa Silvester (Girls Under-12). Sabah State Tennis technical manager Mansor Abdul Rahman said 143 players and 60 officials from eight districts were involved in the four-day tournament which begun on August 12. Finished in second place was Kota Kinabalu with two golds, one silver, five bronzes and in third place was Kota Belud with one gold and one bronze. Sandakan District Tennis Association president Silvester Lawai, who was the guest of honour, expressed his appreciation to all the organising committee members, referees, officials, and volunteers for their hard work to ensure the success of the tournament. He congratulated all the winners and hoped the 24 players selected to represent Sabah at the National Championship in Melaka will give their very best and return with medals. He also said the success of the Sandakan team is a fitting farewell to Amir Bukhari, who will be retiring this year. Also present at the closing ceremony were Sandakan district assistant education officer Ahmad Yussof Mohamad, State education department assistant sports unit director Chew Mei Mah, SMK Elopura2 principal Awang Tajudin A. K. SKA karatekas bag 2 golds, a silver, 2 bronzes

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Karate Association (SKA) finished ninth overall in the club category at the 2nd Asian Youth Open Championship cum Training Camp hosted by Asian Karate Federation and organised by Chinese Karate Association in Linping, Hangzhou, China from August 12-16. Despite sending only a six-member team, they managed to win two golds, one silver and two bronzes in the five-day event. At last year's meet held in Wuhan, China, SKA was represented by 19 athletes and finished seventh in the same category with one gold, five silvers and four bronzes. The gold medallists this year were Neyo Chai Xiao Le (Under-14 male kata individual) and Danish Rayyan Rajis (cadet male kata individual). The only silver came from Al-Zovainz Zurizal (cadet male -63kg), while the bronze medals were delivered by Muhammad Farish Danish Mohd Saidin (junior male -61kg) and Putra Rayn Nazwan Heryzuan (junior male -55kg). Defending champion Aira, 20, went toe-to-toe with her 23-year-old sibling and came out on top, winning 8-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-6, 11-8 at the Nicol David International Squash Centre here. ALSO READ: Sister Act II: Aira and Aifa set for title showdown It was a repeat of last year's final in Kuala Lumpur, where Aira emerged victorious after four sets at the Jalan Duta Squash Courts. In 2023, Aira won her first national title when she defeated Noor Ainaa Amani Ampandi.

‘No 2026 Grand Slam Track till athletes paid'

PARIS: The financially troubled Grand Slam Track circuit will not take place in 2026 until athletes awaiting prize money for this year are paid, its founder Michael Johnson said on Friday. Johnson admitted in a statement 'we are struggling with our ability to compensate' athletes from the three meetings that took place in 2025 in Kingston, Jamaica, Miami and Philadelphia. The four-time Olympic sprint gold medallist said he had taken the decision to cancel the fourth and final meeting in Los Angeles 'to avoid further losses and start the lengthy process of stabilising the company to get back on track. 'But unfortunately, we saw circumstances change in ways beyond our control,' he said. He added: 'The 2026 season will not happen until those obligations are met—and that is my #1 priority.' Johnson said he had held talks with new investors and he remained 'confident' about the future of Grand Slam. 'We're not done yet. Not even close,' he said. Johnson launched Grand Slam as an alternative to the Diamond League series of international meetings with an important difference—it would only feature track events and no field events. He promised a more concentrated format with more head-to-head races between the world's best athletes. However, while the series was able to recruit stars such as US Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas and 400m hurdles world record holder and double Olympic gold medallist Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, it failed to recruit a host of top sprinting talent including the reigning men's and women's 100m champions Noah Lyles and Julien Alfred. The series offered athletes prize money of up to $100,000 for their overall standings after participating in two races at each meet. Athletes were pictured holding up giant cheques showing how much money they had won. However, while the competitors expressed enthusiasm for the series, there were clear signs it had failed to capture the imagination of fans.
