After 28 years & 51 moves Louis finally retires

BBC News04-06-2025
Footballing journeyman Jefferson Louis has called time on his long career after 28 years and 51 transfers. The 46-year-old debuted for Risborough Rangers in 1996 at the age of 17, marking the start of a long career in lower-league English football. He has had three spells at Thame United, where he was most recently before retiring.Throughout his career he also spent time at Oxford United, Mansfield Town, Wrexham, Crawley Town, Lincoln City and so many more. "It was a dream for me to become a professional footballer," Louis told BBC Radio Oxford."I played at some great grounds and with some great players, later on I met some lovely people on my travels and that motivated me later in my career."I have a good circle of friends that have really encouraged me to overcome the dark days and strive for more, I've played for a long time and I must be doing something right as I've still to this day had more managers ask me to come play for them."Louis scored 10 goals in 64 appearances for Oxford United and was well remembered for scoring a winning header against Swindon Town in the FA Cup second round in 2002.That goal saw the U's draw his boyhood club Arsenal at Highbury in round three, where they went on to lose 2-0."Before the game (against Swindon) I didn't realise the level of hate between the two sides," Louis said. "I've never heard the Kassam so loud on that day, when I scored it was a great feeling and then after the game it hit me what I had done."And in the next round we got drawn against Arsenal it was a moment I will never forget and I will tell my little boy about, I can't describe deep down how it felt."When we went to Highbury that was so special, I came onto the pitch with both the Oxford and Arsenal fans shouting my name, I won't forget it."
New chapter at Slough Town
Since retiring from the game, Louis has now taken up a coaching role with Slough Town FC and will be their assistant head coach., externalThe Rebels said that he would mainly work with the club's strikers but also provide some valuable mentorship to some of their younger players. Louis previously played for Slough, making five appearances for them between 2022 and 2023. He also had a role as a performance coach at the club in the summer of 2023. "The boots are staying in the closet, I won't play again," Louis added."Aside from showing the guys on the pitch what to do in training I'm going to take a rest from playing."Away from football, Louis does work at a pupil referral centre for school children that have been excluded from schools. He spent a short period of time in prison when he was 22 for dangerous driving."I say to kids that everyone has to make mistakes to learn," Louis said. "I tell them that I've made mistakes and I'm still learning every day because I'm open to it, I've lived it so I can understand them better. "I feel like when I help one child it is like scoring a goal, I feel on top of the world because I want them to live to their true potential and it's important for them to live up to their dream, it's so rewarding for me."

England legend Peter Shilton loses Guinness World Record he set 28 YEARS AGO for most competitive appearances

A BRAZILIAN footballer has surpassed Peter Shilton's longstanding record for most competitive appearances at professional level. Last Saturday, Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio walked out onto the pitch for the 1,390th time – a 2-1 home win over Fortaleza in Brazil's Serie A – which equalled former England stopper Shilton's tally set 28 years ago. 6 6 And then on Tuesday evening at the Maracana stadium, he broke new ground in men's football as he appeared in goal against Colombian outfit América de Cali – for match number 1,391 of his long career. This was in the second leg of the last 16 of the Copa Sudamericana, which is the Europa League equivalent of South American club football. Fabio finished the match on the winning side as they won 2-0 on the night and 4-1 on aggregate. To mark the occasion, he celebrated with his family on the pitch as he was presented with a couple of mementoes. In a professional career spanning 28 years, the 44-year-old has played senior games for Uniao Bandeirante (30), Vasco da Gama (150), Cruzeiro (976) and Fluminense (235). Fabio, who turns 45 next month, may have begun his senior career five years after the advent of the English Premier League. But remarkably, despite his unrivalled longevity, he has never had the privilege of donning the famous yellow Brazilian shirt in a competitive fixture. A member of Brazil's under-17s World Cup triumph in Egypt in 1997, he was an unused sub during the 2003 Fifa Confederations Cup campaign in France. And he was on the bench the whole time as Carlos Alberto Parreira's Brazil lifted the 2004 Copa America in Peru. When he was asked about possibly breaking Shilton's record, Fabio told Brazilian media: 'God gave me this gift. 'I have to thank everyone who has been part of my life – my father, mother, sisters, friends, my wife...I try to be a good person. 'The important thing is to help my teammates. I am grateful, but without God nothing would be possible. 'These are difficult games and we are facing very strong teams. We are always striving to achieve our goals, which are the titles.' Provided he is fit, Fabio could extend the record much further into the distance, especially as the Brazilian domestic league does not stop until December 21. 6 6 Shilton, who played between 1966 and 1997, is acknowledged as the record holder for the most competitive men's professional games, though the total is disputed. Guinness World Records and a number of statistics websites say the tally is 1390. Yet Shilton, 75, who played a record 125 times for England, claimed on social media that it should be 1387. The discrepancy comes from Guinness officials including 16 unofficial games that Shilton does not include – while he includes 13 games he played for England's Under-23s side that normally are not counted.

Tottenham star Mathys Tel breaks his silence after suffering racist online abuse following last week's Super Cup defeat by PSG

Mathys Tel has spoken out for the first time since he was subjected to vile racist abuse after Tottenham Hotspur's Super Cup final defeat to Paris Saint-German. The Frenchman, 20, missed a decisive spot-kick as Spurs lost to the Champions League winners 4-3 in a penalty shootout last Wednesday. Thomas Frank seemed destined for his first trophy after Micky van de Ven, who also missed a penalty, and Cristian Romero put his side 2-0 up, but PSG fought back with two late goals before defeating Spurs in the shoutout. And, as has become all too common in the the world of football, Tel was subjected to waves of online racist abuse in the hours after he fired his penalty wide. His club called out the 'cowards' hiding behind anonymous profiles venting their frustrations at Tel in a statement released to social media. Now, a little under a week after the final, the young winger, who featured in his side's 3-0 victory over Burnley at the weekend off the bench, has broken his silence with an Instagram post. Tel wrote: 'Everyone, after the last few days have passed, I wanted to thank you for all your messages of support! 'I was also disappointed about Wednesday night but racism has no place in our society. 'Every day is a learning curve, and every day is a lesson. I know where I come from, where I started and none of this will bring me down,. 'With work and humility, respect reigns. Thank you all #COYS' Tel is far from the first Black player to receive racist abuse on social media after a mishap on the pitch. Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford were notably subjected to such abuse following their penalty misses in the final of Euro 2020. While only last month Lionesses star Jess Carter revealed she was stepping away from social media after being targeted online. Her decision led to Sarina Wiegman's side announcing they would no longer take the knee before matches, admitting the gesture has now lost its meaning and purpose. Carter admitted that she breathed a 'sigh of relief' after a white team-mate missed a penalty during England's triumphant Euro 2025 campaign. The England defender told ITV: 'It's horrible to say but it's almost like a sigh of relief when other players that weren't black missed a penalty, because the racism that would have come with LJ (Lauren James) being the only one that missed would have been astronomical. 'It's not because we want them to fail - it's about knowing how it's going to be for us (England's black players) if we miss.' In the wake of Tel's miss last week, anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out warned that Black players may end up avoiding penalty-taking duties as a result of racist trolls. 'If you're a Black player, it would be totally understandable to think, "Why would I want to take a penalty?" That's the state of the game right now, and the sad fact is, it's nothing new,' the organisation said in a statement. 'Players are routinely targeted with racism online and want action; we want action, too. 'Accountability from offenders and social media companies is a baseline, but it's not being met. 'Football bodies, authorities, and the regulator Ofcom, must come together to accelerate a plan that better protects players. 'Their welfare should always be paramount, and we stand with Mathys Tel and all those who have suffered this continuing, racist abuse.'

Supercomputer predicts Premier League table after first round of fixtures with West Ham relegated and Spurs struggling

A SUPERCOMPUTER has predicted the Premier League table for this season following the opening round of matches. And it's bad news for two London clubs, with West Ham tipped to be relegated and Tottenham expected to finish in the bottom half yet again. 1 Fans were treated to a thrilling weekend of Prem action following its glorious return after a summer break. Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal were among those celebrating wins. But the likes of Man United, Everton and Bournemouth were left cursing morale-damaging defeats. Now, boffins at Plejmo have fired up their in-house Supercomputer to predict the final Premier League table. And it's set to be the most exciting title race in years, with Man City and Arsenal both finishing on 86 points. However, it will be more heartache for the Gunners again, who are tipped to miss out on top spot due to goal difference. That will see the title return to the Etihad once more, with current holders Liverpool expected to finish third and SIX points behind the leaders. The fourth and – for now – final Champions League spot is heading to Aston Villa, although they will be eight points off third. That sees them come just ahead of Newcastle in fifth, with Chelsea securing Europa League football in sixth. But there's a huge improvement for Ruben Amorim's United, who will trade last season's 15th place finish for seventh spot and the Europa League. They are expected to finish level with Crystal Palace but see off their rivals on goal difference. Finishing in the top half are Nottingham Forest and Brighton, again tied on points and decided by goal difference. Heading into the bottom half, Spurs are next up with a disappointing 11th place finish under Thomas Frank. Everton and Bournemouth follow after ending on level points. While Brentford and Leeds are tipped to beat the drop with 14th and 15th place finishes. Fulham are saved from relegation by just three points, while the final team to stay up will be Sunderland. The Black Cats are predicted to finish on level points with Wolves, but it's the Midlands club who will go down due to inferior goal difference. Finally, Burnley are expected to come second-last. And it's misery for West Ham, with the Supercomputer tipping them for bottom spot with just six wins all season.
