India-EU FTA must address tariff, non-tariff barriers: Swedish Minister
Stockholm [Sweden], June 12 (ANI): A comprehensive free trade agreement between India and the European Union should tackle both tariff and non-tariff barriers to maximise benefits for both regions, Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Benjamin Dousa said Wednesday.
Speaking to business leaders from India and Sweden, Dousa emphasised that both the EU and India are 'just a bit over-regulated' and would benefit significantly from reducing regulatory barriers alongside traditional tariffs.
'The best outcome for both the EU and India will be an FTA that goes beyond tariffs to include non-tariff barriers,' Dousa said. 'Both regions are somewhat over-regulated at present, and addressing this will enable smoother cross-border trade.'The minister highlighted the strong existing partnership between Sweden and India, noting that 75 Indian companies operate in Sweden, employing approximately 7,000 people. Major Swedish companies, including ABB, IKEA, and Ericsson, have made substantial investments in India over many years.
'Our countries are very well positioned to grow together,' Dousa said. 'We have been close partners for a very long time, and Swedish companies have invested heavily in India.'
The FTA negotiations between the two sides are expected to conclude in 2025. India last month said the two sides engaged in a forward-looking and substantive dialogue to address global trade challenges and reaffirm their shared resolve to conclude the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of 2025.
Dousa expressed confidence that India could become a trusted global manufacturing hub by continuing to attract foreign direct investment.
He noted that Sweden is well-positioned to help India increase manufacturing's share of its GDP, particularly as India has set ambitious goals to grow its manufacturing sector.
The minister pointed to India's status as the world's fastest-growing economy and emphasized the country's increasingly prominent role on the global stage.
He also highlighted cooperation between the two nations in space technology and noted that Indian investment in Sweden continues to grow.
According to Dousa, a comprehensive trade agreement would not only increase ease of doing business but also create opportunities for building more robust supply chains between the regions.
The proposed FTA represents a significant opportunity for both India and the EU to reduce regulatory barriers that currently impede trade flows, while strengthening economic ties that could benefit both regions' long-term growth prospects.
Speaking on behalf of Swedish industry, Jacob Wallenberg, Chairman of the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise, issued a clear call to action: 'Swedish industry captains call for urgent India-EU FTA [and] urge political leaders of India and EU to conclude FTA at the earliest.' (ANI)

Kerala CM slams PM Modi for praising RSS in I-Day speech
T'puram: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for praising RSS in his Independence Day speech. He stated that giving credit to RSS and V D Savarkar for Indian independence was a denial of history. Vijayan said it was a dishonour to the independence struggle that the Prime Minister chose Independence Day itself to eulogize those who worshipped the British. RSS was banned in connection with the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, and Savarkar faced conspiracy charges related to the murder, the chief minister said. Any amount of ridiculous efforts to whitewash an organization like RSS would not work. The conspiracy behind such an exercise was clearer in the Union petroleum ministry's Independence Day poster, featuring Savarkar above Gandhiji, he added. "It shows the panic of those who fear the history of the freedom struggle," Vijayan said in a statement. "Indians joined the national independence movement beyond caste, religion, dress and language differences. RSS played the role of bystanders then. They openly opposed the fundamental ideological concepts of the freedom movement. Instead of the unity in diversity that Indian nationalism upholds, they promoted a Hindutva nationalism based on majority communalism. On Nov 26, 1949, when the Constituent Assembly gave final approval to India's Constitution, the RSS mouthpiece, Organizer, editorialized that Manusmriti should be upheld instead of the Constitution," the chief minister said. Vijayan said Savarkar boycotted the Independence Day celebrations on Aug 15, 1947. It was this same Savarkar whom the Sangh Parivar is now projecting as a leader of the freedom struggle. RSS, which stood aloof throughout the phases of the freedom struggle, is now engaged in creating false narratives to claim a role in the national movement. "What respect do those who called for observing Aug 14 as a day of Partition horror have for Independence Day?" he asked. The nation must stand united against any attempt to bury the history of humanity and mutual respect and replace it with hatred, he added. Manipur Governor meets Naga outfit delegation over India-Myanmar border fencing, scrapping of FMR
A delegation of United Naga Council (UNC) met Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan Saturday to discuss the India-Myanmar border fencing and the scrapping of the Free Movement Regime (FMR). The apex body of Naga outfits in Manipur, UNC has been opposing the ongoing construction of border fencing, as well as scrapping of FMR — stating 'these would otherwise affect the community that has been divided by the border'. The 10-member delegation, led by UNC president Ng Lorho, shared their views and concerns related to border fencing and FMR scrapping, and requested the Governor to take up these issues with the Central government, the Raj Bhavan said in a statement. 'The Governor has assured to facilitate talks between the Government of India and the UNC at the earliest,' Lorho told the media, adding another round of talks involving the Government and the UNC 'would be arranged within three days'. The meeting came in the wake of expiry of the 20-day ultimatum by the UNC in protest against the 'ongoing border fencing work along the Indo-Myanmar border' and the 'unilateral suspension of the FMR'. On August 11, during an emergency presidential council meeting, the UNC declared it was left with 'no option, but to intensify its movement'. With PTI

India, South Korea resolve to set ‘new industrial ambition' in high-tech sectors
India and South Korea on Saturday resolved to expand their strategic partnership by setting new 'industrial ambition' in the areas of semiconductor, defence, clean energy, and artificial intelligence. Ways to ramp up the overall bilateral cooperation figured prominently in talks between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his visiting South Korean counterpart, Cho Hyun. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Jaishankar and Hyun agreed to set new industrial ambitions, especially in high-tech sectors such as AI, semiconductors, clean energy, shipbuilding, and the defence industry. The ministers took stock of bilateral cooperation, including in the political, security, trade and economy, technological, and people-to-people domains, it said. In a social media post, Jaishankar said, 'Held productive discussions on advancing our bilateral cooperation in trade, manufacturing, maritime and people-to-people exchanges as well as new opportunities in AI, semiconductors, clean energy and defence.' Jaishankar said he and Hyun also exchanged perspectives on the Indo-Pacific region and contemporary global developments. 'Appreciated our deepening convergences and growing engagement as our Special Strategic Partnership completes 10 years,' he said. In his opening remarks at the meeting, Jaishankar also thanked Seoul for its condemnation of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Jaishankar made a mention of Seoul's support to an Indian parliamentary delegation that visited South Korea in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor. 'You have been barely a month in the job (as the foreign minister), the fact that you are here literally a day after your National Day, and our National Day, says a lot really about the value we attach to the relationship,' Jaishankar said. The MEA said Jaishankar and Hyun reaffirmed the strong and growing 'special strategic partnership' between the two countries. The partnership is rooted in shared democratic values, mutual trust, shared economic interests, and commitment to regional and global peace and stability, it said.
