Jennifer Lopez's ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman' Near Distribution Deal With Roadside, Lionsgate and LD Entertainment

Yahoo24-03-2025
Three months after its debut at the Sundance Film Festival, 'Kiss of the Spider Woman' is finally nearing a distribution deal. Roadside Attractions, Lionsgate and LD Entertainment are in final talks to take domestic rights on director Bill Condon's adaptation of the stage musical of the same name, ensuring the Jennifer Lopez-starring drama will see the light of day, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap.
Terms of the deal, including release plans and financial figures, were not disclosed.
The Artists Equity-produced film came into Sundance as one of the festival's buzzier titles due to its cast and pedigree – Condon was behind acclaimed titles like 'Chicago' and 'Gods and Monsters' — but it drew mixed reviews at its premiere and major buyers like Netflix passed.
The movie, written and directed by Condon, follows the story of the stage musical closely as it chronicles the relationship between queer hairdresser Luis (Tonatiuh) and a Marxist named Valentin (Diego Luna) imprisoned in Argentina during 1981's Dirty War. To pass the time, Luis recounts the story of the film 'Kiss of the Spider Woman,' with colorful musical numbers sprinkled throughout as Lopez fills the starring role in the movie within the film.
'Kiss of the Spider Woman' is not the only film to get a late pickup out of this year's record-slow Sundance. Molly Gordon's well-reviewed comedy 'Oh Hi' went to Sony Pictures Classics earlier this month.
Roadside recently released 'The Last Showgirl' and will next open the Nicolas Cage film 'The Surfer' in May.

Susan Collins to get Hollywood treatment at fundraiser with Democrats

The fundraiser will be held at the home of Sherry Lansing, a former Paramount Pictures chair and prominent liberal donor, according to three people with knowledge of the fundraiser. Lansing's home in the Bel Air neighborhood is a mainstay on the philanthropy and Democratic fundraising circuit, hosting the likes of Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis of California on her patio, which opens to sweeping views of Los Angeles. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Lansing is set to co-host the event with Casey Wasserman, the sports and entertainment mogul and chair of the Los Angeles Olympics organizing committee, which is handling logistics for the Summer Games in 2028. Wasserman is a longtime Democratic giver as well, but he has taken steps to ingratiate himself with the right as of late, giving Olympic medals to President Donald Trump at the White House this month and donating to some Republicans during this election cycle. Advertisement Casey Wasserman, chairman of LA28, presented medals from the 1984 Olympics to President Trump in Washington on Aug. 5. Alex Brandon/Associated Press The Bel Air event has attracted some attention in Hollywood because Democrats will need to topple Republicans such as Collins if they have a chance at retaking the Senate. It is unclear how strong a candidate Democrats will field in Maine. On Tuesday, a political novice, Graham Platner, announced his entry into the Democratic primary. Advertisement Wasserman and Lansing decided to participate in the Southern California fundraiser because it was set up as a bipartisan host committee, with two Democrats and two Republicans, according to a person close to them. One of the Republicans is Harry E. Sloan, a former chair of MGM and a current member of the Lionsgate board. Sloan was once a prominent backer of moderate Republicans such as John McCain, but in recent years he has also made six-figure contributions to Democrats, including to back the 2024 presidential campaigns of Joe Biden and then Kamala Harris. Sloan's wife, Florence, a filmmaker with similar giving patterns to her husband, is also listed on the invitation. The other Republican hosting the event is Michael Burns, vice chair of the Lionsgate film and television studio. 'I'm proud to have supported my dear friend Senator Collins for many years,' Burns said in a text message. 'She remains a clear-thinking, bipartisan moderate in a world that, at least for the moment, is something far different.' Lansing, Wasserman and Sloan did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Collins' campaign had no comment. Tickets for the reception run from $3,500 to $10,000. Collins is also expected to attend finance events in Northern California around the time of the Bel Air fundraiser, according to a person with knowledge of the matter. New public plaza, La Placita, coming to Belmont Cragin

A new outdoor space for culture and entertainment is coming to the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on Chicago's Northwest Side. Officials broke ground Tuesday on La Placita, a project to transform the plaza at Grand and Fullerton avenues. "We're finally going to activate this corner," Ald. Gilbert Villegas (36th) said. Villegas said the project to renovate the plaza is four years in the making. The underutilized lot will be transformed into a vibrant neighborhood gathering space. "There really isn't like an epicenter in our neighborhood where people can go to and know that things are happening. So, this is really that go-to," said Jason Estremera, executive director of the Northwest Side Community Development Corporation. Estremera said the new space will provide a pergola, raised stage for cultural programming, and grassy area for people to enjoy. "One of the things about Belmont Cragin is we have the lowest green space per individual in the city. So that's really burdensome, when you're talking about a population of a little over 80,000 folks," he said. Officials said the space also will provide access to food trucks and street vendors. The organization worked closely with Villegas' office to identify the site and develop a vision to activate and maintain it as a gateway to the Belmont Cragin community. "There's so much rich cultural tradition and talent, musically and artistically, that we're hoping the plaza will be a gathering space to share all those different cultural traditions," said Kelly Pyzik, grants and communication manager at the Northwest Side Community Development Corporation. La Placita in Belmont Cragin is the first of three new plaza improvement projects for the Chicago Department of Transportation. Construction will begin this year. It's part of the city's efforts to expand and enhance public spaces across Chicago. "A lot of the work here that you're going to see in construction coming in the forward months are going to echo the symbols and meaningful elements of the community culture," said CDOT managing deputy commissioner Vig Krishnamurthy. La Placita is expected to be finished in the spring of 2026. In addition to La Placita, CDOT will soon begin construction on plaza improvement projects in the Pilsen and Wicker Park neighborhoods.

Kyle Marvin on Love, Lies and Acting Without Pants

When Kyle Marvin made his first movie, he made one big mistake. 'I gave up my day job way before I should have,' he says with a laugh. At the time, Marvin, 40, was working in advertising with his best friend, actor and director Michael Angelo Covino. They shot sketches, produced the occasional project and eventually decided to write, produce and star in their own short film, The Climb, about a friendship tested during a weekend bike ride. 'My wife and I had a good life, we were raising two children, and I was like, 'I'm going to give it all up and go make movies,' ' Marvin recalls. ' 'And I'm going to make absolutely nothing — in fact, I'm going to lose money.' I sold our family car to finance the movie.' More from The Hollywood Reporter 'Diary of a CEO' Host Steven Bartlett Is Not Willing to Risk His Happiness 'Wednesday' Star Emma Myers Accepts Any Challenge Thrown Her Way - Including "Difficult" Part 2 Scenes Kieron Moore Relishes Taking on Complex Characters, From 'Code of Silence' to Queer Camboy The Climb premiered at Sundance in 2018 and was so well received that it was expanded into a feature, which premiered at Cannes in 2019 and went on to play Telluride and Toronto that same year. Now, half a decade later, Marvin is reteaming with Covino, co-writing, co-producing and co-starring in Splitsville (in theaters Aug. 20), a relationship comedy with studio muscle from Neon and extra star power from Adria Arjona and Dakota Johnson. 'I have more stability now, obviously, but I still have that same 'fuck it' mentality,' he says. 'Where it feels like you're taking your clothes off, jumping into a pond and you might drown.' In this case, the metaphor isn't far off — Marvin has more than a few nude scenes in Splitsville. It opens with his character and his wife (Arjona) on a drive to a couples weekend with their best friends (Covino and Johnson) that turns out to be filled with bombshell revelations, starting with his wife's confession that she's been unfaithful and wants a divorce. Once they arrive, the confessions keep coming — including that their friends are in an open marriage. The chaos spirals into sexual entanglements, absurd confessions and an extended slapstick brawl that sends Marvin and Covino crashing through windows, tumbling over furniture and getting Marvin's eyebrows singed off in a hairspray-and-lighter stunt gone wrong. 'We really, genuinely beat the shit out of ourselves filming that, and we shot it before I had to go and do the nude scenes,' he says. 'The makeup team would take my clothes off and just be like: 'What?!' They were airbrushing bruises and cuts off of me.' The premise, Marvin insists, comes not from his own marriage (he's been with his wife for 20 years, and they now have three kids) but from conversations — some overheard — as he and Covino searched for a lean, spicy concept that could be shot quickly and economically. 'Everybody in my life has said that I stole a piece of their story for this movie,' Marvin says. 'This movie isn't only about open marriages or cheating — which is what they used to call open marriages — it's about how we're all challenged in our relationships. The movie is just trying to unpack all that in a fun setting.' Since The Climb, Marvin also has built a parallel, more commercial career: portraying WeWork co-founder Miguel McKelvey in Apple TV+'s WeCrashed, directing Paramount's 80 for Brady and prepping a biopic about mountain climber Warren 'Batso' Harding. He says that trajectory wasn't plotted out in advance — not even when he quit his job and sold his car — but rather came from taking small steps toward what he wanted and proving himself along the way. As for what's next, Marvin's hoping Splitsville's momentum will help him keep climbing. 'It feels like bullshit when I say it out loud, but I really do just want to make things that reach a lot of people and yet still have that tone and potency I'm always chasing.'
