Garrett Nussmeier started his July 4 weekend with fireworks of a different kind. The 23-year-old LSU quarterback revealed on Sunday that he proposed to longtime girlfriend Ella Springfield while the couple were visiting friends in Oklahoma.
Nussmeier kept the reveal simple: an Instagram Story of Springfield holding up her new ring with the caption 'forever us.' Springfield answered with her own selfie and a seven-word reply: 'I get to marry my best friend!!!'
A relationship rooted in Baton Rouge
The pair are believed to have met during their freshman year at LSU in 2021 and have stayed together roster turnover, coaching changes and Nussmeier's climb up the depth chart. Springfield finished a marketing degree last spring and now works in Dallas, so weekends often mean long drives or quick flights.
Those miles, they say, made the engagement feel overdue.
What the ring means for LSU's new leader
Nussmeier is heading into his fifth season and second as the Tigers' starter after throwing for 4,052 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2024. LSU is expected to open preseason camp in late July, and coaches believe the stability in his personal life can only help a locker room that lost several veterans to the NFL.
Family first: sister Ashlynn's quick reaction
Nussmeier's younger sister Ashlynn posted a short reply on her Instagram story—'BESTIE SIS'—alongside a screenshot of the couple's announcement.

The close siblings often trade public messages on big days, and fans noted that her two-word cheer fit the family's habit of keeping things informal but heartfelt.
Teammates and fans join the celebration
By Monday morning, LSU wide-receiver Malik Nabers had reposted the ring photo with a row of heart emojis, while All-SEC left tackle Will Campbell joked, 'Two rings down, Natty up next.' Tigers head coach Brian Kelly replied on X, 'Proud of you, 13. Enjoy the moment.'
More than 20,000 likes followed within hours, and threads on LSU fan forums filled with wedding-song debates and good-natured pleas that Nussmeier schedule the ceremony for a bye week.
Why the engagement matters beyond social media
For Nussmeier, the timing is practical. A source close to the program said the quarterback hopes to lock in wedding plans before the season's media glare intensifies. Springfield, who has attended almost every home game since 2022, is already helping pick venues near Baton Rouge so elderly relatives can attend.
The family intends to keep details private until a date is confirmed.
What comes next
LSU opens the 2025 season on August 30, travelling to Clemson's Memorial Stadium, before its home opener a week later. Nussmeier's immediate focus will shift back to film study and timing routes, but Sunday's news gave Tiger Nation an early reason to cheer. As one fan wrote under Springfield's post, 'First the ring, then the rings.'
The quarterback has not commented beyond his initial story, yet the message is clear: a personal milestone achieved, and a new season waiting. For now, the Tigers' leader can enjoy a brief pause before returning to the huddle—engaged, grounded and ready for what's next.

NHL teams commit to decentralized draft format through 2026 despite mixed reactions

NHL votes to stick with decentralized draft model in 2026 (Getty Images) The NHL has reportedly decided to stick with its decentralized draft model for the 2026 season. The decision was made after two-thirds of the league's clubs voted in favor of continuing this new format, as confirmed by multiple sources, including Sportsnet and The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun. 2026 NHL Draft won't return to normal as teams back another year of the decentralized model This move marks a departure from the centralized draft approach that had long been a unique NHL hallmark. In the traditional setup, team executives, coaches, and scouts gathered together on the arena floor, creating a dynamic environment that was both TV-friendly and filled with real-time decision-making energy. However, those inside the league had grown weary of that format, citing issues around privacy, logistical challenges, and the compressed timeline between the draft and the start of free agency. — DarrenDreger (@DarrenDreger) The 2025 NHL Draft, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, marked the league's first deliberate shift to decentralization, excluding the COVID-era virtual drafts. Teams remained in their respective home markets, while a representative—be it an alumni, current player, or celebrity—announced their selections on-site. A total of 93 prospects were in attendance, receiving their jerseys from Commissioner Gary Bettman and speaking with club officials via virtual interviews. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One plan. Total peace of mind. ICICI Pru Life Insurance Plan Get Quote Undo While fans were treated to a TV broadcast with glitzy production and intriguing storylines, the execution wasn't flawless. The first round extended over four hours, and many viewers described the show as clunky and at times awkward, especially during the 'Draft House' segments where prospects communicated virtually with their new teams—sometimes through shaky connections. Despite the hiccups, deputy commissioner Bill Daly assured that production issues can be easily resolved before the next draft. Ratings for the 2025 event were solid, and by day two, the process felt smoother. That provided a silver lining for league officials aiming to refine the format. More importantly, the feedback from players themselves was largely positive. 'At the end of the day, all of the prospects were there,' said Flyers' second-round pick Shane Vansaghi. 'We were all getting picked, we were all walking up there and putting on our jerseys and we were all getting drafted into the NHL. That's the point of the draft in my opinion.' While some fans and critics lament the absence of a centralized, marquee event like the NFL's draft combine or the NBA Summer League, it appears the NHL is prioritizing operational efficiency and internal comfort. The decentralized model may lack spectacle, but for now, it's here to stay—perhaps signaling a permanent evolution in how hockey's future stars enter the league. ‘Metro... In Dino' Box Office collection day 9: Sara Ali Khan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Pankaj Tripathi's film sees BIG jump on second Saturday; earns over Rs 33 crore

Anurag Basu's new film 'Metro... In Dino' is taking moviegoers back into the lanes of love, heartbreak and hope, all set in the middle of a busy city. Released on 4th July, this film brings together a big bunch of actors we all know and love. From Sara Ali Khan and Aditya Roy Kapur to Neena Gupta, Pankaj Tripathi , Konkona Sen Sharma , Ali Fazal, Anupam Kher and Fatima Sana Shaikh. Many have called it a sort of spiritual sequel to Basu's popular 2007 film 'Life... In A Metro'. This time, too, he gives us a slice-of-life story that looks at different people and their tangled relationships. The film's box office run started off calm but picked up pace. On day 9, the film's collection saw a big jump. A decent start at the box office According to Sacnilk, 'Metro... Dino' got off to a decent start in cinemas. In its first seven days, the film collected an estimated Rs 26.85 crore in India. On its opening Friday, it made Rs 3.5 crore. Saturday brought in better numbers with Rs 6 crore, and by Sunday, it reached its first peak of Rs 7.25 crore. As the weekdays rolled in, the film's earnings dipped a little, which is common for most films. Monday saw Rs 2.5 crore, Tuesday grew slightly to Rs 3 crore, followed by Rs 2.35 crore on Wednesday and Rs 2.25 crore on Thursday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Đây có thể là thời điểm tốt nhất để giao dịch vàng trong 5 năm qua IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo By the end of its first week, the film was close to Rs 27 crore. Big Saturday boost on day 9 Day 8, which was a Friday again, showed early estimates of Rs 2.25 crore. But on day 9, according to early estimates by Sacnilk, the film saw a surge in collection and minted around Rs 4.65 crore on Saturday. This took its total to an impressive Rs 33.85 crore. This jump on the second Saturday has come as a pleasant surprise and shows that audiences are warming up to the film more and more. Day 9 occupancy The occupancy in theatres on Saturday, 12th July, also showed how many people stepped out to watch the film. Overall, 'Metro... In Dino' had a 44.84% Hindi occupancy that day. The morning shows had around 18.63% seats filled. This went up sharply in the afternoon shows to 47.86%. By evening, it was even better at 56.28%, and night shows did the best with 56.59% occupancy. 'Metro... In Dino' review 'The Times of India' gave the film a fair review, pointing out both the good and the not-so-good bits. The review read, "Despite being largely pleasant, some tracks don't quite add up, feel uneven and don't know where to end. After an engaging build up, the second half feels a tad stretched. You also wish the story scratched the surface a little more, especially for Konkona-Neena Gupta track, where the actors have the potential and gravitas to dig deeper. " However, the review also praised the film for giving Bollywood something it's been missing lately. It said, "There has been a scarcity of love stories in Bollywood and Metro In Dino, elevated by some fine performances, fills that gap perfectly. It is a breezy, intimate watch tailor-made for a rainy day."

Canucks set to blow it again? Quinn Hughes' U.S. move may already be in motion

Quinn Hughes might face similar fate to Matthew Tkachuk (Image via Quinn Hughes of the Vancouver Canucks may seek a move to a U.S. team, NHL rumours suggest, similar to Matthew Tkachuk's successful transition to Florida. Experts advise the Canucks to secure his future now, as a potential departure to play with his brothers in New Jersey looms, despite Hughes' strong performance and two years remaining on his contract. Vancouver faces another Matthew Tkachuk disaster Talk of Quinn Hughes' future is bursting in hockey, echoing Matthew Tkachuk's impactful past choice. Tkachuk, a celebrated forward, left Calgary, driven by "The chance to win was the most attractive," a gamble leading to "Two back-to-back Stanley Cup victories and countless memories with the Panthers." Many now wonder if Hughes will make a similar shift. The talk gained momentum when NHL Rumour Report underscored insights from insider Greg Wyshynski. Wyshynski's sentiment, shared on The Big Show, was evident: "Greg Wyshynski: Re Quinn Hughes: It'd be insane to let him walk; you could see the situation becoming like a Matthew Tkachuk, where…you know where it's all headed…" He urged the Canucks to "…make a deal before he leaves for nothing; it kind of feels like it's trending that direction." This advice is reasonable, given Hughes' impressive season, mirroring Tkachuk's high-point production before his departure. Nevertheless, a perplexing factor arose from Canucks' President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford's May remarks on 100% Hockey with Millard & Shannon. While recognising Hughes as "a wonderful person and a great player, but we do control him for two more years…if we get to that trade deadline two years from now, and it looks like he doesn't want to stay then, then we would have to do something at that point," Rutherford also proclaimed Hughes as the "face of the franchise" and conveyed the team's desire for his continued presence. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Our one of a kind Patented Cold Water Extraction Process Superior Ginseng Undo Beyond financial compensation, the persuasion of playing alongside his brothers, Luke and Jack, for the New Jersey Devils is a tenacious rumor. Yet, Wyshynski cautioned against jumping to conclusions: "We've gone down this road in the past of just assuming a guy wants to play in the States or with a sibling; we ultimately don't know what Quinn feeling about the organization or the city is, he might have a different idea than we do. " Tkachuk himself phrased, "There's no single reason why I left at the end of the day," indicating a sophisticated decision. His significant eight-year, $76 million contract with the Panthers certainly played a role, a significant investment that General Manager Bill Zito lauded. "Matthew is a tenacious, physical competitor who possesses a tremendously unique skillset. He is a consistent elite offensive contributor and has emerged as one of the most complete and dynamic young players in the National Hockey League. We are thrilled to be able to add a generational talent to our lineup." Also Read: 'We're lucky': Matthew Tkachuk applauds Panthers' cap gamble on Brad Marchand and Sam Bennett This faith was vindicated by Tkachuk's immediate impact and multiple Stanley Cup Finals demeanor.
