
'Golden opportunity': Assocham hails India-UK trade deal, calls it a turning point for private firms
A top industry leader has called it a "golden opportunity" for the private sector to drive growth in key areas like pharmaceuticals, electronics, and auto components.
Sanjay Nayar, president of ASSOCHAM and founder-chairman of the Sorin Investment Fund, said the India-UK Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) could help double the country's exports to Britain in the next six years if implemented effectively.
"India needs to grow exports beyond services into goods and trade. This agreement provides a huge opportunity," Nayar told news agency ANI in an interview.
He said the deal gives the nation a 'clear path' to expand its reach in sectors such as pharmaceuticals and electronics.
The ambitious goal under the pact is to push bilateral trade to $120 billion by 2030, a major jump from current levels.
Stronger market access
What makes this trade agreement stand out is its wide scope. It covers not only tariff reductions but also liberalisation of services, easier investment procedures, improved professional mobility, and even access to public procurement in the UK.
'This FTA opens up UK public procurement infrastructure for Indian IT companies, construction firms, and medical sector businesses,' Nayar explained.

One of the long-standing concerns for professionals has also been addressed. The deal resolves double taxation issues, potentially saving around $500 million that would otherwise be lost due to overlapping contributions by employers and employees.
'This benefits mobility of our professionals big time,' Nayar said, noting that the move would make it easier and more appealing for Indian talent to take up opportunities in the UK.
Private sector must step up
While acknowledging the strong groundwork laid by the government during negotiations, Nayar said the ball is now in the private sector's court.
'The government has done most of the heavy lifting. Now the private sector needs to focus on how to capitalise on this and convert it into real exports.'
Nayar also urged companies to take full advantage of the new frameworks and market access, warning that success will depend on how well they execute their expansion strategies under the trade pact.
The CETA is expected to benefit multiple sectors and create a more predictable environment for firms looking to expand in the UK.

Moderate 3% rise in global gold demand
Global gold demand increased three per cent year-on-year to 1,249 tonne during the April-June quarter of the current year, amid a high price environment, World Gold Council (WGC) said in a report on Thursday. Strong gold investment flows largely fuelled quarterly growth, as an increasingly unpredictable geopolitical environment and price momentum sustained demand, according to WGC's Q2/2025 Gold Demand Trends report. 'Gold ETF investment remained a key driver of total demand, with inflows of 170 tonnes over the quarter, compared with small outflows in Q2 2024. Asian-listed funds were major contributors at 70 tonne, keeping pace with US flows. Combined with record inflows in the first quarter, global gold ETF desmand reached 397 tonne, the highest first-half total since 2020,' the report added. Meanwhile, the total bar and coin investment also increased 11 per cent year-on-year, adding 307 tonne. Chinese investors led the way with a 44 per cent year-on-year increase to 115 tonne, while Indian investors continued to add to their holdings, totalling 46 tonne in the second quarter. Divergent trends emerged in Western markets as European net investment more than doubled to 28 tonne, while US bar and coin demand halved to 9 tonne in the second quarter. Central banks continued to buy, adding 166 tonne in the April-June quarter this year, led by Poland, Turkey and Azerbaijan. Despite this deceleration, central bank buying remained at significantly elevated levels due to ongoing economic and geopolitical uncertainty. 'Our annual central bank survey shows that 95 per cent of reserve managers believe that global central bank gold reserves will increase over the next 12 months,' the report said. Jewellery demand continued to decline, with the volume of consumption down 14 per cent and nearing low levels last seen in 2020 during the Covid pandemic. Jewellery demand in China was down 20 per cent, and Indian demand fell 17 per cent year-on-year. However, in value terms, the global jewellery market increased to a total of $36 billion. 'The overall jewellery has dropped to 341 tonnes but increased in value to about $36 billion, which is interesting. From a Chinese demand perspective, it's down 20 per cent in terms of volume. Further, the report revealed that the total gold supply increased 3 per cent to 1,249 tonnes, with mine production up marginally to a new second quarter record. Compact, stylish and packed with tech, it's aimed at buyers who want to go electric without sacrificing luxury or brand cachet. And when it arrives in India by the end of the year, it could be (at around ₹60 lakh) one of the most desirable EVs. The stylish Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric arrives in India by the end of the year. What makes the CLA Electric special is not just its badge or sleek design, it's how cleverly it's been engineered. The platform, designed primarily for electric cars, is also flexible enough for hybrids or petrol engines. That's a nod to real-world buyer behaviour: Even in developed countries, not everyone's ready to go fully electric just yet. The version we drove, the CLA 250+, uses a single electric motor at the rear and an innovative two-speed gearbox, rare for EVs. This helps it achieve an astonishing claimed range of up to 792km. We managed over 730km on a single charge. That's good enough for a Mumbai-Goa trip. Mercedes-Benz's CLA Electric is one of the most aerodynamic cars ever made. It's one of the most aerodynamic cars ever made. Every crease, curve and flush surface, hidden door handle and smooth underbody panel is designed to reduce drag and stretch efficiency. The trade-off? But the steering-mounted controls, long a sore point in modern Mercs, now offer tactile feedback and feel far more precise. Even the seat adjusters now deliver a reassuring, well-engineered click. There's mood lighting in 64 colours, a thumping optional Burmester 3D sound system, and a nifty 'frunk' under the bonnet. It's quick without being wild, and the handling feels confident and balanced. The new brake system feels more natural than in earlier electric Mercs, and regenerative braking (used to charge the battery while slowing down) is now easier to control. Ride quality has also improved, with a much softer edge than the previous petrol CLA. The CLA Electric isn't trying to be a Tesla rival or a track monster. Instead, it's a compact luxury EV that focuses on style, tech, and range. For those who value design, efficiency and a quiet, high-tech cabin, it makes a strong case. Apple to boost AI spending, Tim Cook says difficult to see a world where iPhone is not living in it
There is no doubt that Apple is officially late to the AI party. However, the company still has high hopes for its devices. This is not just a trend we observed, but CEO Tim Cook has recently told investors that Apple is throwing its full weight behind artificial intelligence as it seeks to catch up with rivals in the race to develop nextgeneration AI technologies. Speaking on the company's thirdquarter earnings call, he described AI as transformative and confirmed that Apple was reallocating resources and staff to strengthen its see AI as one of the most profound technologies of our lifetime. We are embedding it across our devices and platforms and across the company. We are also significantly growing our investments,' Cook said. 'Apple has always been about taking the most advanced technologies and making them easy to use and accessible for everyone, and that's at the heart of our AI strategy,' he explained that Apple has been moving more people onto AI projects. 'We have a great, great team and we're putting all of our energy behind it,' he said. The company said its growing AI ambitions are also visible in its capital expenditure. Reports have even suggested that a demo of the new Siri was far from Cook defended the company's approach, insisting that Apple is not interested in speed for its own sake. 'Rushing out the wrong features or the wrong products just to be first would be a mistake,' the company has repeatedly said. 'That's especially true if those products don't work as promised.'Apple says it has already launched more than 20 new AIpowered capabilities under its 'Apple Intelligence' branding. These include Visual Intelligence features, a Writing assistant, and a Cleanup tool. Later this year, the company expects to roll out live translation and an AI workout companion. However, the muchanticipated update to Siri has been pushed back to 2026. Cook said Apple was 'making good progress' on the the call, Cook was asked about the possibility that future hardware, such as the AI glasses recently touted by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, could threaten the dominance of the iPhone.'It's difficult to see a world where iPhones aren't living in it,' Cook replied. 'That doesn't mean that we are not thinking about other things, as well, but I think that the [AI] devices are likely to be complementary devices, not substitutions.'Pressed on which areas of AI technology Apple sees as commoditised, Cook declined to give specifics, saying: 'That would give away part of our strategy.'While the AI future for Apple devices is still under wraps, this year we are excited to see how the rumoured iPhone 17 Air will turn out.
