Kevin Durant trolls Thunder fans after championship: 'bout time they win one'
Since the 2025-26 season opener was announced, there's been online chatter on how the OKC crowd should conduct itself with Durant's presence. Does he still warrant boos nearly a decade since his ugly 2016 departure? Or does a championship finally let fans fully move on?
Well, Durant made that choice pretty easy. He spent the early hours of Sunday morning going back and forth with several social media users on X, formerly known as Twitter. Every year, you're guaranteed a few social media outbursts from the 36-year-old. His chronic online usage is what seperates him from other NBA superstars. And, in my opinion, more of fun guy to root for and against.
Spoiling NBA fans with a drama-filled Sunday amid a content desert, Durant leaned into his villain gimmick against Thunder fans. No love lost between those two parties still. When asked about how he felt with his upcoming presence during OKC's championship celebration, he fired back.

That enough would grab headlines. But Durant kept going. When one Thunder fan claimed Durant doesn't need to be disrespectful to them after they won the championship, he said it was part of the fun and games that comes with following the NBA.

Of course, all this stems from Durant's departure. He shocked the NBA world when he joined the Golden State Warriors. It took the Thunder nearly a decade to return to the spot they were at when he last played for them. Rehashing his controversial decision to leave, he claims zero regrets on the move. Even though he immediately won two championships with Golden State, the discourse around him remains toxic.
Durant wrote: "You're right, I care more about me than I care about your fanbase. You caught me lmao." Later on, he pulled the nihilist card and said championships are championships. How fans feel right now about him is going to change the longer time passes. While some NBA fans might roll their eyes at this junkfood-level TV drama, you gotta love it if you're the NBA. The schedule-makers knew what they were doing when they penciled in Durant and the Rockets as the Thunder's Opening Night opponent.
Now, Durant's combativeness makes it an even jucier storyline. It also gives August a few drops of content in what is otherwise the driest part of the league's calendar when everybody is on vacation for the next two months. The Durant and Thunder fans anomosity has been one of the hotter rivalries the last decade. It remains so even with both sides tasting championship champage since their divorce.

McMillan said during the same appearance that James is a lot more confident than he was several months ago, and that it has resulted in him shooting the ball better from the perimeter. The 20-year-old didn't hit from 3-point range during summer league play, but he was clearly more poised with the basketball in his hands. If James does earn playing time this season, it would help the Lakers. They lack quality guard depth and could really use a legitimate 3-and-D guard who is a point-of-attack defender. That seems to be exactly the type of player James is becoming, and at least for now, his defense is the strongest aspect of his game. Like the Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga, the Bulls have their own restricted free agent to come to terms with before the start of the 2025-26 season in guard Josh Giddey. Giddey, a 22-year-old guard from Australia, is believed to be interested in staying in Chicago after his first season with the team. He was traded to the Bulls in a deal that sent guard Alex Caruso to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2024 offseason. The Bulls guard had another improving season in the NBA with a struggling Chicago franchise. In 70 games in 2024-25, Giddey finished with averages of 14.6 points and career-highs in rebounds (8.1), assists (7.2), steals (1.2), and three-point percentage (37.8%). Although the two sides have a mutual interest in figuring out a deal to stay in Chicago, there's been a growing conflict in recent days over the annual amount of money Giddey will be paid. An offer that the Bulls have made is a deal that has him getting paid $20 million a year, but the 2021 lottery pick is looking for something closer to the $30-million-a-year range, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer. As the season inches closer and no deal has been agreed upon, it's been mentioned that the Golden State Warriors are interested in a sign-and-trade deal for the Bulls' guard. "Golden State would be interested in, depending on how the machinations could go, some type of Josh Giddey, Jonathan Kuminga sign-and-trade, to my understanding," Fischer said in his podcast. Speculation says that Giddey and the Bulls are going to get a deal done, but if contract negotiations aren't agreed upon, the Warriors could be a place where he gets moved.

Armstrong's career is best remembered for his days as a backup guard on the Chicago Bulls during their first three-peat, but the Kid also had a couple of stints outside of Chi-Town and with other stars besides Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. One of the more memorable times for B.J. was his time with the Charlotte Hornets. Armstrong spent only a season and a half in Buzz City, but the variety of the squad really impressed the one-time All-Star. However, one guy that really caught B.J.'s eye was Vlade Divac. Before teaming up with the Serbian center, he never really noticed how good a player Divac was. "Vlade was one of those guys I played with that were really as a big, you know, Bill, you were the best big I ever played with. Vlade was really interesting. Because he could pass like I've never seen. He would just be throwing things all around. It was a good team, I had a good time," Armstrong praised Divac on Bill Cartwright's podcast. Ahead of his time Divac's career is best remembered for his time as a youngster on the Los Angeles Lakers and his days as a big part of the beloved Sacramento Kings in the early 2000s. However, in between those two tenures, Vlade spent two seasons with the Hornets. Armstrong didn't have big expectations coming to Charlotte, but the Serbian would end up being one of the best big men he had ever played with due to his exceptional passing skills. "It was another experience, and I go down there. I played with what was a really interesting player, Vlade Divac. I knew Vlade from high school. Dave Cowens was coaching. It was great to play with Vlade, he was like this passing big. He would just make all types of passes. They weren't irresponsible, but he would have five turnovers just trying to make the craziest passes," B.J. added. Nowadays, big men who handle the ball, set up the offense, and throw flashy dimes are regular occurrences, with Nikola Jokic being the perfect example. The Joker's fellow compatriot Divac was somewhat of a lite version of that before it even became a thing, as it is obvious that Vlade was ahead of his time. For his 16-year NBA career, Divac averaged 11.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. He regularly handled the ball and was the guy those Kings teams played through, and almost went all the way. Vlade was also doing that on a high level with the Hornets, impressing Armstrong with his boldness and court Buzz City squad While those Hornets teams were often fan-favourites, they never managed to have enough to go all the way. However, with Divac and Armstrong on the squad, supported by a plethora of solid names, they would constantly battle in the playoffs. "We had great shooters. We had Delly Curry, who was phenomenal. Glen Rice, myself. And Vlade would be just whipping the ball around. We had the late Anthony Mason, who was a low-post player. We had a really good team," Armstrong said. From Glen Rice, Anthony Mason, Dell Curry, David Wesley, Vernon Maxwell, and company, this Charlotte squad would finish with a 51-31 record and make it to the second round of the 1998 playoffs.
