Assembly polls will end sufferings of people under DMK regime: Nainar Nagendran
State Bharatiya Janata Party president Nainar Nagendran said he could comment on the issue of the Enforcement Directorate probe into irregularities in Tasmac only after the final outcome of a case filed in the Supreme Court.
Mr. Nagendran was here to offer prayer at the Andal Temple, along with Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, on Thursday.
Talking to reporters, Mr. Nagendran said the Apex Court had given only an interim stay on the issue. The final judgement would come only when the court reopened after summer vacation, he added.
Asked about the Tamil Nadu Government taking legal recourse over the Union Government denying ₹2,000 crore for the State under Samagra Shiksha Scheme, he said the DMK had not kept its poll promises. 'Even the ₹1,000 monthly assistance to women, promised during the 2021 Assembly elections, was given only on the eve of Lok Sabha polls to garner votes. The DMK was not for the welfare of the people but only for votes,' he said.
The ensuing Assembly election would put an end to the increasing burden on the common man by way of increasing property tax, electricity tariff and milk price, he said.
When his attention was drawn to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin claiming that the AIADMK had rejoined the BJP only out of fear of raids by the Central agencies, Mr. Nagendran said the AIADMK had no reason to fear any such raids.

Madras High Court Orders Closure Of Liquor Shop Near School In Tamil Nadu
Chennai: In a significant judgment, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday (2 June, 2025) ordered the closure of a state-owned liquor shop (TASMAC) located in Dindigul town. The petitioner, P. Vetrivvel, argued that the liquor shop on Trichy Road was causing a nuisance for children passing through the area on their way to school. While the petitioner claimed that the school is located within 30 metres of the shop, the government countered that the TASMAC outlet falls within corporation limits, where the minimum required distance is 50 metres. It also contended that in a commercial area, the prescribed distance restrictions would not apply. However, the court dismissed the government's arguments and observed that the presence of the TASMAC outlet could indeed cause inconvenience and nuisance to the public, particularly to children during school hours. The court also stated, "It is contradictory for a welfare government to establish more hospitals on the one hand and simultaneously operate TASMAC shops on the other. This is not in consonance with constitutional ethos." The bench referred to Article 47 of the Constitution, which mandates the State to improve public health and endeavor to prohibit intoxicating drinks except for medicinal purposes. "It is a constitutional philosophy and the Directive principles insist that a welfare Government should strive wholeheartedly to enforce prohibition, rather than establish more TASMAC shops which adversely affect public health," court emphasised. It added, "When the right to health is a fundamental right, the State must ensure that the prohibition is slowly implemented in a phased manner to reduce harm to the public health". Irrespective of the political divide and the ruling DMK and the opposition AIADMK have been using TASMAC as a cash cow, unmindful of the health impact on consumers. Last year, the Tamil Nadu government earned a revenue of Rs 48,344 crore from TASMAC, an increase of Rs 2,483 crore from the previous year. Amid demands for prohibition, during her tenure as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa initiated measures to reduce the number of TASMAC liquor shops. This included announcing the closure of 500 liquor outlets and reducing the business hours of state-run liquor shops. The ruling DMK too had initiated measures to downsize number of shops, but the sale or liquor is only on the rise. The government argues prohibition is practically difficult to enforce as all neighbouring states sell liquor and a prohibition in this scenario would only nurture illicit liquor. But on the ground this argument many say falls flat as the state witnessed two illicit liquor tragedies killing nearly 80 people over the last few years. The matter is now listed for reporting compliance on June 18, 2025.

"Rahul Gandhi speaking like political puppet for Pakistan": BJP leader CR Kesavan
Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], June 7 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party leader CR Kesavan hit out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday, calling him as a 'political puppet of Pakistan,' after the latter alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi 'surrendered' following a call by US President Donald Trump and agreed to a cessation of hostilities with Pakistan. 'Rahul Gandhi is speaking like a political puppet of Pakistan. He is desperately trying to piggyback Pakistan's nefarious anti-India agenda to revive his failed political career. But a frustrated Rahul Gandhi will not succeed,' Kesavan said. He said that the remarks made by the Congress leader are being 'paraded' on Pakistani TV channels, leading to 'running of a poisonous narrative against India' and its armed forces. 'Never in political history in India have we seen somebody like Rahul Gandhi with so little intelligence, so much dishonesty, and so much arrogance,' said CR Kesavan, while adding that 'frustrated Rahul Gandhi' will not succeed. Earlier, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attacked the BJP-led government over his allegations of mediation by the United States in Operation Sindoor, alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi 'followed' Donald Trump following 'a call' by the US leader and that the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi did not budge to the US in the 1971 war. Addressing a convention of Congress workers in Bhopal, Rahul Gandhi, who is Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, attacked the BJP-RSS and alleged that if slight pressure is exerted on them, 'they run away out of fear'. 'Now, I understand RSS-BJP well. If slight pressure is put on them, they run away out of fear. When Trump called Modiji, Modiji kya kar rahe ho, Narender-Surrender and with 'ji hazooor', Narenderji followed Trump.
