Independence Day 2025: History, Events, Significance And All You Need To Know

Independence Day 2025: India gained freedom from British colonial rule after a long struggle on August 15, 1947. The day is remembered for the freedom fighters and the common Indians who coalesced together and managed to snatch back the country's independence from the Britishers. Independence Day History The British Empire ruled India for 150 years through the East India Company, the trading company that was set up in Surat, Gujarat in 1619. Post their victory at the Battle of Plassey, the East India Company, in 1757, took control of the nation. Freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, Chandra Shekhar Azad, and many others fought for India's independence. In 1947, the Quit India Movement resulted in the British leaving the country. Independence Day Significance The Indian Independence Bill was introduced in the British Parliament in 1947. After being passed, it formally ended the British rule in India, which led to the creation of Pakistan, separate from India. Independence Day Celebrations On August 15, 1947, Prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the tricolour from the ramparts of the Red Fort in Delhi, followed by his famous 'Tryst with destiny' speech. Ever since then, the flag is unfurled from the monument by the sitting PM, followed by an address to the people of the nation. Celebrations take place across the country with cultural programmes, social service activities and illumination of the national monuments. People organise cultural programs and seminars to pay tribute to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India's freedom. Is India Celebrating The 78th Or 79th Independence Day In 2024? The discussion centres on two assumptions -- whether the day can be counted from August 15, 1947, the day India gained independence, or from the day it celebrated its first anniversary one year later. India will be commemorating its 79th anniversary of gaining independence if we count from the day of independence. However, if we calculate from August 15, 1948, it is the 78th Independence Day.

Lok Sabha passes National Sports Governance Bill — All you need to know

Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya The long-awaited National Sports Governance Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha here on Monday with Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya describing it as the "single biggest reform in Indian sports since independence" amid opposition protests over revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. The opposition leaders were not present in the house when the bills were introduced for consideration and passage as most of them were detained while marching towards the Election Commission headquarters against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar and alleged voter data fudging. But after two MPs participated in the consideration debate, speaking in the bill's support, the opposition members returned to the house and started raising slogans. Amid the din, the bills were passed by a voice vote following which the House was adjourned till 4pm. "It is the single biggest reform in sports since independence. This bill will ensure accountability, ensure justice, best governance in sports federations," Mandaviya said amid sloganeering by opposition members. "It will have massive significance in India's sports ecosystem. It is unfortunate that such an important bill and reform does not have opposition's participation," he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Were So Beautiful Before; Now Look At Them; Number 10 Will Shock You Reportingly Undo Earlier, Chairman of the parliamentary committee on sports, Digvijaya Singh, requested Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to refer the National Sports Governance Bill to the panel. He felt that the bill should be examined and discussed before it is taken up by Parliament Mandaviya said the two bills were key reforms aimed at building a "transparent, accountable and world-class sports ecosystem" in India as the country aims to bid for the 2036 Olympics. "Efforts have been made since 1975 and in 1985, we had the first draft. But sports was also politicised for personal gains. Some ministers made efforts to bring this bill but could not move forward. Efforts to bring such reforms date back to 1975, with drafts in 1985, 2011, and multiple attempts that failed to reach Parliament. The existing National Sports Code (2011) is being replaced with this comprehensive legislation. "In 2011, we had a National Sports Code. Another effort was made to turn it into a bill. It reached the cabinet, there was a discussion as well but the bill was deferred after that. It did not reach the Parliament," the minister stated while presenting a timeline of the bill's journey. "The National Sports Bill Governance Bill is a force of being such a large country, our performance at the Olympic Games and on the international stage has not been satisfactory and this Bill aims to build India's sports capacity," he added. The sports governance bill has provisions for a National Sports Board (NSB) to create a stringent system of accountability. All National Sports Federations (NSFs) will have to attain NSB's recognition for access to central government funding. All National Sports Federations (NSFs) must get NSB recognition for government funding. NSB can de-recognise federations for election irregularities, lack of audited accounts, or misuse of funds (in consultation with relevant global bodies). The NSB will have the mandate to de-recognise a national body that fails to hold elections for its Executive Committee or has committed "gross irregularities in the election procedures." F ailure to publish annual audited accounts or "misused, misapplied or misappropriated public funds" would also be liable for action by the NSB but it would be required to consult the concerned global body before making its move. Another feature is the proposal for a National Sports Tribunal, which will have the powers of a civil court and decide disputes ranging from selection to election involving federations and athletes. Once instituted, Tribunal's decisions can only be challenged in the Supreme Court. The bill makes some concessions on the issue of age cap for administrators by allowing those in the bracket of 70 to 75 to contest elections if the concerned international bodies' statutes and bylaws allow for it. It is a departure from the national sports code that capped the age limit at 70. Administrators aged 70–75 can contest elections if permitted by international federation rules (earlier limit was 70). "...as a part of the preparatory activities for the bidding of Summer Olympic Games 2036, it is imperative that the sports governance landscape undergo a positive transformation to bring better outcomes, sporting excellence and aids in improved performance in major international competitions," read the bill's statement of objectives. All recognised national sports bodies will be under the RTI Act, except those not reliant on government funding (e.g., partial relief for BCCI). All recognised national sports bodies would also come under the ambit of the Right to Information (RTI) Act, something that the BCCI has vehemently opposed since it is not dependent on government funding. Aims to create a transparent, accountable, and world-class sports governance system. Seeks to improve India's performance in major international competitions, including the Olympics. However, the cricket board has got some leeway on that front with the government amending the bill to ensure that RTI would be applicable only on bodies that rely on government funding or support. US licenses Nvidia to export chips to China, official says

The commerce department has started issuing licenses to Nvidia to export its H20 chips to China, a U.S. official told Reuters on Friday, removing a significant hurdle to the AI bellwether's access to a key market. The U.S. last month reversed an April ban on the sale of the H20 chip to China. The company had tailored the microprocessor specially to the Chinese market to comply with the Biden-era AI chip export controls. The curbs will slice $8 billion off sales from its July quarter, the chipmaker has warned. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang met with Trump on Wednesday, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. A spokesperson for Nvidia declined comment. A White House spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The company said in July it was filing applications with the U.S. government to resume sales to China of the H20 graphics processing unit, and had been assured it would get the licenses soon. It is unclear how many licenses may have been issued, which companies Nvidia is allowed to ship the H20s to, and the value of the shipments allowed. Nvidia disclosed in April that it expected a $5.5 billion charge related to the restrictions. In May, Nvidia said the actual first-quarter charge due to the H20 restrictions was $1 billion less than expected because it was able to reuse some materials. The Financial Times first reported Friday's developments. Nvidia said last month that its products have no 'backdoors' that would allow remote access or control after China raised concerns over potential security risks in the H20 chip. Exports of Nvidia's other advanced AI chips, barring the H20, to China are still restricted. Successive U.S. administrations have curbed exports of advanced chips to China, looking to stymie Beijing's AI and defense development. While this has impacted U.S. firms' ability to fully address booming demand from China, one of the world's largest semiconductor markets, it still remains an important revenue driver for American chipmakers. Huang has said the company's leadership position could slip without sales to China, where developers were being courted by Huawei Technologies with chips produced in China. In May, Nvidia said the H20 had brought in $4.6 billion in sales in the first quarter and that China accounted for 12.5% of overall revenue during the period.
