A gelato bar with scoops including matcha burnt cheesecake are all made in-house. Beside it is a wall of self-serve, Japanese-inspired baked goods. There's melon pan, a bun with a cross-hatched streusel topping; French sweets such as financiers in flavours including matcha and hojicha; and sweet potato shio-pan (Japanese salt bread). All are baked on-site.
At the back of the space, a sushi and sake bar offers three styles of rice wine – available individually or as a flight – plus sushi including the popular Sudoku platter – a segmented tray of nine kinds of sushi and sashimi. Meanwhile, the Wagyu Kitchen is the place for luxe hot pot featuring Japanese beef; kushiyaki (grilled skewers, from beef to pork belly); and rice bowls topped with wagyu short-rib, an onsen egg and pickles. There's also plenty besides beef, including karaage chicken and grilled unagi eel.

Japan eyes 'economic zone' to link Indian Ocean, Africa

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has proposed an economic zone connecting the Indian Ocean to Africa as his country seeks to play a greater role on the African continent while the US presence there decreases and China's influence rapidly grows. Ishiba, kicking off the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), pledged to strengthen business and investment in the region and promote free trade by connecting the Indian Ocean region to the African continent. "Japan believes in Africa's future," Ishiba said. "Japan backs the concept of African Continental Free Trade Area," which aims to bolster the region's competitiveness. This year's summit comes as US President Donald Trump's tariff war and drastic cuts in foreign-aid programs have negatively affected development projects in Africa. Meanwhile, China has been expanding its foothold in the area since 2000 through infrastructure building and loan projects. At last, #TICAD9 kicks off tomorrow! We are sharing Foreign Minister IWAYA's message, towards the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (#TICAD), taking place in Yokohama, to connect the future of Japan and are below👇 MOFA of Japan (@MofaJapan_en) August 19, 2025 The three-day summit in Yokohama, near Tokyo, is focusing on the economy as well as peace and stability, health, climate change and education. Leaders and representatives from about 50 countries from the African continent, as well as officials from international organisations, are attending. Japan launched TICAD in 1993. It was last held in Tunisia in 2022. "Africa must have a stronger voice in shaping the decisions that affect its future," United Nation's Secretary-General António Guterres said at the event, adding that African countries are underrepresented in the international community and its decision-making process. Under the Indian Ocean Africa economic zone initiative, Japan aims to bring investment into Africa from Japanese companies operating in India and the Middle East. Ishiba said Japan will extend loans of up to $US5.5 billion ($A8.6 billion) in co-ordination with the African Development Bank to promote Africa's sustainable development to address their debt problems. He also said Japan aims to provide support to train 30,000 artificial intelligence experts over the next three years to promote digitalisation and create jobs. Guterres said "unjust and unfair international financial architecture" must enhance African representation and endorse a strong African voice in the decision-making process, adding that building AI capacity in developing countries in Africa would help ease a digital divide in the region. Those present at the summit are expected to adopt a "Yokohama declaration" on Friday and Ishiba will announce the outcome at a news conference.

Nissan X-Trail Nismo teased ahead of imminent debut

The Nissan X-Trail is getting a sporty Nismo makeover, but it hasn't been confirmed for our market. 'For the Japanese domestic market a new X-Trail NISMO will be revealed tomorrow. All details will be revealed then,' said Nissan Australia spokesperson. The new Nismo flagship will be revealed at 11:00am AEST on August 21, 2025. It's expected to top a facelifted X-Trail lineup that, according to Japanese outlet Creative Trend, will also include a rugged-looking Rock Creek variant. The facelifted X-Trail range will reportedly go on sale in Japan in September. Nissan Australia hasn't confirmed when the wider facelifted X-Trail lineup will arrive in Australia. CarExpert can save you thousands on a new Nissan. Click here to get a great deal. As seen in the single teaser image released by Nissan, the X-Trail Nismo has prominent red accents on its front bumper as well as what appears to be a unique grille. According to Creative Trend, it'll get the following unique equipment: Nismo-exclusive grille, bumpers, mirror caps Available Nismo Stealth Grey paint with a Super Black roof Black roof rails Enkei 20-inch alloy wheels Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres Nismo-exclusive fabric and leatherette upholstery There'll also be red stitching for the seats, steering wheel, dashboard, armrest and doors, as well as other Nismo touches like a red-accented start button. A set of leather and Alcantara-clad Recaro sports seats will reportedly be an additional option. Above: Nissan Note Aura Nismo Creative Trend reports the X-Trail Nismo will be offered only in e-Power with e-4orce form, meaning a series hybrid powertrain with all-wheel drive, and exclusively with five seats. However, it reportedly won't get any extra power. The current X-Trail e-Power with e-4orce has a 105kW/250Nm 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine mated with 150kW/330Nm front and 100kW/195Nm rear electric motors. However, mechnical upgrades are expected to include retuned steering and suspension, as well as tweaks to the all-wheel drive system. Above: Current Nissan X-Trail It's not the first Nissan to get a Nismo makeover. Besides the Z Nismo sports car sold here, Nissan offers Nismo-fettled versions of its Ariya, Leaf, Note and Skyline in Japan, all featuring a raft of aesthetic and mechanical enhancements – though not always offering more power than the models upon which they're based. The X-Trail Nismo will give Nissan an alternative to sporty mid-size SUVs like the petrol-powered Volkswagen Tiguan 195TSI R Line and the upcoming plug-in hybrid Toyota RAV4 GR Sport, and will slot in atop a refreshed X-Trail lineup. According to Creative Trend, changes across the range will reportedly include a new grille and front bumper, as well as fresh wheel designs. Inside, the facelifted X-Trail will reportedly get a black upper dash and doors, replacing the existing brown, plus USB-C outlets to replace the USB-A outlets, a new infotainment system with Google built-in, and a 3D view for the available surround-view camera. However, the Japanese website says tri-zone climate control has been removed, while ventilated front seats haven't been added like on the related Mitsubishi Outlander. Above: Nissan Rogue Rock Creek Not only is the facelifted X-Trail set to get a sporty Nismo flagship, it's also getting a Rock Creek edition like that offered with the almost identical Nissan Rogue built in the US. This more rugged variant will reportedly also be offered exclusively in e-Power with e-4orce guise, albeit with a choice of five- or seven-seat configurations. Standard features will reportedly include black 19-inch wheels with orange accents, wrapped in all-terrain tyres, as well as a unique front bumper and grille, plus waterproof trim and orange stitching inside. The X-Trail Rock Creek will also reportedly be available with the same 'hero' paint scheme – Canyon Beige, with a Super Black roof – as the Rogue Rock Creek, along with a range of other exterior colours. Launched in the US-market Rogue for 2025, the Rock Creek grade brings a unique front fascia, a tubular roof rack with integrated cross bars, and 17-inch satin black wheels wrapped in 235/65R17 Falken Wild Peak all-terrain tyres. Inside, there's water-repellant leatherette upholstery and Lava Red accent stitching. Notably, there are no mechanical enhancements for either the US-market Rogue Rock Creek or the upcoming X-Trail Rock Creek, making it more equivalent to a Subaru Forester Sport than the tougher Forester Wilderness offered overseas. It'll battle not only the Forester Sport but also the upcoming Toyota RAV4 Adventure/Woodland, and replace the Japanese-market X-Trail Extremer X, which is effectively the same as our local N-Trek. The launch of a facelifted X-Trail comes almost two years after the related Rogue received a refresh in the US, bringing revised front- and rear-end styling, new interior trim, and an available 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen featuring Google built-in. Above: 2026 Nissan Rogue Nissan also ditched USB-A outlets for USB-C outlets. The reason for the delay in Nissan facelifting the X-Trail stems from the fact it was launched considerably later than the Rogue. Nissan launched the current Rogue in the US in late 2020, but the X-Trail didn't launch in Japan until July 2022 and in Australia until later that year. Don't be too jealous of buyers in markets where the Rogue is sold, however – they don't get the e-Power powertrain, though they do get a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine in lieu of the naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four sold here.

Perth AFL power couple's intense love captured in photoshoot

Andy Brayshaw and Lizzie Stock's endless love for each other has been beautifully captured in a European-inspired engagement photoshoot ahead of their wedding this year. The Fremantle Dockers co-vice captain and registered injectables nurse got engaged in Paris last year, and the couple have now confirmed they will tie the knot in November. To celebrate their love and upcoming nuptials surrounded by loved ones, the dynamic duo starred in an engagement-themed photoshoot at Lawson Flats in the Perth CBD. The intimate shoot captured the couple's love story and showcased the beauty of Peppermint Grove Jewellers' sparkling diamond pieces. Brayshaw and Stock said they are 'very excited' about their upcoming wedding and 'it will be so special to celebrate with all our nearest and dearest'. 'It will be the wedding of all weddings,' they said. 'We are very thankful and grateful for the team at PGJ to have been a part of this magical journey with us, and we can't wait to see our jewellery vision come to life on the day.' Lizzie Stock shows off her engagement ring. Credit: Supplied PGJ head jeweller McKenzie Silver travelled to Belgium earlier this year to create the European-inspired pieces Stock wore for the shoot. The couple's wedding rings have also been exclusively made by PGJ. PGJ co-owner Giuseppe Algari said each piece told 'a story of love, elegance, and timeless beauty', reflecting the 'meticulous attention to detail and passion' that define the brand. 'At PGJ, we focus heavily on investing in innovation and the latest trends and encouraged our head jeweller, McKenzie Silver, to travel to Belgium this year to attend a three-month jewellery course to help PGJ stay ahead of the trends worldwide,' he said. The creative vision behind the shoot was brought to life by a WA team, with makeup by Brittany Mason, hair styling by Renee Yates of Renee Yates Hair and photography by Bianca Tuzee. The couple are high school sweethearts. Credit: Bianca Tuzee The intimate shoot was set within the moody elegance of Lawson Flats. Credit: Supplied With an atmosphere of romance and refinement, it was only fitting to have one of Perth's best bridal designers and stores, Blanc Bridal and Mason's Juliet Studio, play a role in helping style three elegant and timeless looks. Stock is also set to showcase PGJ jewels at this year's AFL Brownlow Medal on September 22. The high school sweethearts, who both hail from Victoria, announced their engagement on social media in January last year. The special news came just days before Brayshaw's brother Angus got married to his partner Danielle Frawley at a winery on the Mornington Peninsula. The Brayshaw's, who also have brother and former West Coast Eagles player Hamish, come from a strong sporting family with their dad, Mark Brayshaw, a former North Melbourne player and uncle James Brayshaw a former state cricketer and star sports commentator.
