Ahsan for development of Gwadar as mining port
The minister gave these directions while chairing a high-level review meeting of the Prime Minister's Committee on the Operationalisation of Gwadar Port.
The meeting focused on reviewing progress and finalising a coordinated action plan for the effective operationalisation of the port. The session was attended by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar, Member Infrastructure Waqas Anwar, and senior representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Interior, Maritime Affairs, Industries, Commerce, and relevant provincial departments.
The minister emphasised the need for continuity in project leadership and instructed the provincial government to appoint full-time and competent project directors to avoid administrative delays.
Member Infrastructure Waqas Anwar briefed the forum on the implementation status of previous decisions, followed by updates from the concerned ministries.
The minister stressed the importance of integrating local communities—particularly the fishing sector—into the economic framework being developed around Gwadar. He emphasised that development efforts must not marginalise the local population and that their livelihoods should be secured alongside foreign investments.
He called for linking the fisheries sector and the broader Blue Economy with national programmes such as the Uraan Pakistan Export Enhancement Strategy. He directed that a comprehensive business plan for Gwadar be developed by engaging qualified consultants with relevant sectoral expertise.
Highlighting Gwadar's proximity to Muscat—just 12 hours by sea, he reiterated the strategic value of establishing a Pakistan-GCC trade corridor via the Gwadar-Muscat maritime route. He underscored the need for an integrated approach involving road, rail, and port connectivity to support trade and economic integration with the region.
Ahsan Iqbal stressed the early completion of key infrastructure projects, particularly the N-85 and Coastal Highway, to support logistics and improve accessibility to the port. He said that before organising investment forums or inviting foreign delegations, it is essential to ensure functional infrastructure and a secure environment. He also reviewed the progress on the Safe City Project in Gwadar and directed the Ministry of Interior and the Government of Balochistan to ensure timely implementation.
Regarding urban planning, the minister reviewed the existing Gwadar Urban Development Plan and directed the relevant authorities to prepare and submit a revised PC-1 to CDWP. He also asked the additional chief secretary of Balochistan to share provincial development plans with the federal government so they could be aligned with the broader objectives of the Uraan Pakistan framework.
Addressing delays in land allocation, the minister noted that the 40-year development agreement for the port should not be activated until land is formally transferred. He expressed concern that this process has been pending for over a decade and asked for urgent resolution in the national interest.
To facilitate foreign investment, the minister proposed establishing a secure residential area for international staff and visitors, taking inspiration from models such as Sharm El Sheikh and Dammam. He encouraged the development of tourism infrastructure in Gwadar, including coastal resorts, and invited international hospitality brands to invest in the region. He called for a comparative study of Gwadar's facilities with other regional ports such as Sohar and Jebel Ali to guide policy decisions and improve competitiveness.
From 2025 to 2027, the government will prioritise activities such as engagement with Afghan transit traders to strengthen trade with Central Asian Republics, feasibility studies for roll-on/roll-off (RO-RO) terminals, and consultations with major global shipping lines like COSCO, CMA, and CGM. Infrastructure improvements through the M-8 Motorway, Eastbay Expressway, and ML-4 are also included in the strategic roadmap.
The minister underlined that inclusive development must remain central to all initiatives, and that the local fishing community should continue to be engaged through formal platforms. He appreciated ongoing efforts to align provincial aquaculture strategies from Sindh and Balochistan with national objectives and capacity-building in maritime sectors, as part of Uraan Pakistan.

Planning minister apprises World Bank official about India's ‘water weaponisation' designs
ISLAMABAD: Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal called on the international community to ensure India adheres to the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). He warned that water weaponisation and violations of the treaty could trigger global food and water crises, posing serious risks to regional stability, adding that such actions can imperil the world peace. The minister shared these views in a meeting with Vice President of the World Bank for the Middle East and North Africa Osman Dione, who called on him in Planning Ministry, Islamabad, on Friday. In the meeting, matters regarding strengthening the collaborative partnership between the World Bank and the Ministry of Planning came under discussion. The minister asserted that adopting an export-led growth model is indispensable for sustainable development. He reaffirmed Pakistan's ambition to increase exports from $32 billion to $100 billion, aiming to boost economic growth and sustainability. During the meeting, the World Bank vice president lauded Professor Ahsan Iqbal's significant contributions towards improving Pakistan's economy. He also highlighted the government's successful efforts in curbing inflation through tough policy measures, which have restored investor confidence and driven the Pakistan Stock Exchange beyond the 130,000-point mark. NA body slams awarding accreditation to various institutions by NAVTTC
ISLAMABAD: The 15th Meeting of National Assembly Standing Committee on Federal Education, Professional Training, National Heritage and Culture was held under the chairmanship of Dr Azim Uddin Zahid Lakhvi on Friday. The committee criticized on awarding accreditation to various institutions by NAVTTC, stating that the renewal, monitoring, and implementation mechanisms are unsatisfactory and require immediate reform. Members emphasized the need for stricter scrutiny of accredited institutions to ensure compliance with established standards. On the matter of employee's regularization, the committee adopted a clear position that no employee should be excluded from the regularization process. This includes contract employees of the Pakistan Madrassah Education Board (PMEB) who have served for 15 years, daily-wage teachers and lecturers in Islamabad Model Colleges, and staff of the National Institute of Science and Technical Education/National Skills University awaiting reinstatement or regularization. Due to the committee's persistent efforts, a cabinet committee has been formed to address these issues, which has now forwarded the matter to Parliament for necessary legislation. The Department of Archaeology and Museums (DOAM) briefed the committee on its mandate to protect and preserve Pakistan's cultural heritage. Currently, DOAM maintains oversight of 407 nationally protected archaeological sites and monuments, with six located within the Islamabad Capital Territory. The department operates 14 museums across the country and maintains active partnerships with international bodies including UNESCO and the International Council of Museums (ICOM). DOAM highlighted significant accomplishments, particularly the successful recovery of 1,125 illegally trafficked antiquities through coordinated efforts with authorities in the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Italy. The department also reported substantial progress on key conservation initiatives, including the restoration of Rewat Fort and Shah Allah Ditta Caves. Committee members, unanimously, affirmed their support for DOAM's ongoing efforts, and ensured its support in addressing the institutional challenges of limited budgetary allocations for museum modernisation and critical staffing shortages. The committee, particularly, emphasised that the preservation of these heritage assets remains fundamental to safeguarding Pakistan's civilisational identity and projecting the nation's rich cultural legacy. The committee received a briefing about the Pakistan Institute of Education (PIE), which was created following Pakistan's 18th constitutional amendment. The PIE serves as the central hub for education data management, performing three key roles: harmonising provincial education data through its MIS Wing, administering nationwide assessments, and generating research to guide policymaking. The institute works to improve education data reliability, facilitate SDG-4 monitoring, and identify out-of-school children. Through collaborations with UNESCO, LUMS and other partners, PIE enhances data-driven policy formulation for Pakistan's education sector. The meeting was attended by MNA's including Dr AzimudDin Zahid Lakhvi, Anjum Aqeel Khan, Syeda Nosheen Iftikhar, Zulfiqar Ali Bhatti, Farah Naz Akbar (Parliamentary Secretary), Mussarat Asif Khwaja, Dr Shazia Sobia Aslam Soomro, Mehtab Akbar Rashdi, Mussarat Rafique Mahesar, Abdul Aleem Khan, Sabheen Ghoury, Dawar Khan Kundi, Fiaz Hussain, Muhammad Aslam Ghumman, Wajiha Qamar and Muhammad Moin Aamer Pirzada.
