Fahmi: Putrajaya pauses RON95 subsidy cuts to ‘fine-tune' policy, avoid burdening public
He said the reason for the delay is that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim does not want the policy to burden most Malaysians.
'The prime minister expressed his view that he does not want the implementation of any policy to negatively affect the majority of the people.
'It is this process of fine-tuning that has resulted in a slight shift in the timeline,' he said in a press conference at the Parliament here.
According to Fahmi, previous policies had been fine-tuned to avoid causing unnecessary hardship to the people.
'That is one of the reasons why, following the implementation of measures such as the diesel subsidy rationalisation and other efforts, we found it necessary to re-examine the subsidy delivery mechanism.
'In the same spirit of minimising impact, even the expansion of the sales and services tax (SST) underwent further refinements after it was announced.
'The same approach applies to policies that have yet to be implemented but were previously indicated including the targeted subsidy for RON95,' he said.
Earlier this month, Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said the government is focusing on finalising the details of the RON95 subsidy rationalisation, which was initially scheduled to begin in the second half of this year.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia is now ready to provide stronger support to the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS), particularly in developing "10+100" national champions. The "10+100" initiative aims to build 10 Malaysian semiconductor and supply chain companies with revenues between RM1 billion and RM4.7 billion, and to nurture at least 100 more to approach the RM1 billion mark. "First, we will unlock more catalytic capital to support early-stage research and development, product development, and ecosystem scaling. "This includes a suite of targeted financing instruments, matching funds, and customised incentives, alongside continued investments by our government-linked investment companies (GLICs), all aimed at strengthening local semiconductor capabilities and advancing Malaysia's position in the global value chain," he said. He said this during his speech at the closing of the Asean Semiconductor Summit in Kuala Lumpur today. Present were Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz and Human Resources Minister Steven Sim. Anwar said Malaysia has so far received over RM2 billion in commitments from the government and crowd-in capital from stakeholders, including Khazanah Nasional Bhd, Kumpulan Wang Persaraan, and Bank Negara Malaysia, as well as through partnerships with global players. "Second, we will elevate our semiconductor diplomacy through deeper government-to-government cooperation, expanding market access for Malaysian firms and forging trusted technology partnerships. "As Asean chair, Malaysia will lead efforts to strengthen regional collaboration, positioning Asean as a resilient and competitive hub in the global semiconductor value chain," he said. Anwar said that through the collaboration between Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science and Technology (Crest) and Human Resources Development Corporation (HRD Corp), the government will strengthen industry-academia partnerships to build a future-ready workforce. He said this will ensure Malaysia builds focused capabilities and remains competitive in a rapidly evolving, high-tech global landscape.

Malaysia PM urges Thailand, Cambodia to stand down after border clash
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urged Thailand and Cambodia to 'stand down' following deadly border clashes between the two Southeast Asian nations. As the current chair of ASEAN, Malaysia is pushing for immediate de-escalation and peaceful negotiations. 'The least we can expect is for them to stand down and hopefully try to enter into negotiation,' Anwar told reporters. He added that he had sent messages to both leaders and hoped to speak with them soon. The conflict intensified on Thursday as Thailand conducted air strikes while Cambodia retaliated with rockets and artillery. The fighting centres on the disputed Emerald Triangle, a region where the borders of Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos converge. Cambodia's cross-border attacks reportedly killed at least 11 Thai civilians, mostly in a rocket strike near a petrol station in Sisaket province. 'The development is concerning. They are important members of ASEAN. They are very close to Malaysia,' Anwar said. The clashes come just two weeks after ASEAN foreign ministers met in Kuala Lumpur with global counterparts, including the US and China. The long-running dispute has previously erupted into violence, most recently in May when a Cambodian soldier was killed. 'Peace is the only option available,' Anwar stressed.
