New Kuala Lumpur - Darwin route to boost tourism
Published on: Sat, Jun 28, 2025 Text Size: DARWIN: AirAsia Malaysia officially launched its inaugural Kuala Lumpur–Darwin route with a strong load factor of nearly 90 per cent, reinforcing the airline's commitment to boosting tourism in the Northern Territory. AirAsia Malaysia officially commenced operations on June 27, marked by the landing of flight AK612 at Darwin International Airport. Air Asia flight AK612 will operate four times a week. The launch of this new route marks a significant milestone for AirAsia and its strong ties with Australia. Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations, Robyn Cahill OAM joined AirAsia on its maiden flight to Darwin said, the Territory's aviation sector continues to go from strength to strength with this new route providing a boost to tourism, growing business and trade and connecting Territorians with a new international flight option (pic). 'We look forward to welcoming more Australian travellers to experience our unique cultural diversity and commitment to sustainable tourism. Kinabatangan to benefit from clear government roadmap, says CM

He said the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government had laid out a clear development roadmap for the state, including Kinabatangan, through the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) direction. The plan covers all aspects of growth, from strengthening the economy and education to improving community wellbeing, supported by achievements in industry, tourism and agriculture. Hajiji highlighted various state initiatives, including monthly aid of RM300 for a year to more than 10,000 low-income residents, and an increase in Rumah Mesra SMJ units to 40 for each state constituency, including Lamag and Sukau. He said the state government has also distributed 100 dialysis machines to government hospitals and clinics to provide free treatment for kidney patients. On the Seri Milian New Town project in Kota Kinabatangan, Hajiji said it would be a catalyst for change expected to transform the district over the next five to 10 years. AirAsia flight ends up at different South Korean airport

(Air Asia pic) PETALING JAYA : Low-cost carrier AirAsia has been criticised after a flight from Kuala Lumpur to South Korea landed at the wrong airport. AirAsia Flight D7 506 landed at Gimpo International Airport instead of Incheon Airport as scheduled, the Korea Herald reported. While 'turbulence' had apparently forced the plane to divert to Gimpo, the manner in which the situation was handled had left passengers fuming. According to passengers, the captain had announced that they had arrived at Incheon Airport, only for them to realise they were in fact at Gimpo when they looked out of the windows and checked their phones. A passenger, identified as Lee Mi-hyun, said the cabin crew were unaware that they had landed at Gimpo 'until passengers told them'. 'One crew member even said she needed to call her parents, who were waiting for her at Incheon International Airport,' Lee was quoted as saying, adding that 'everyone panicked'. She also claimed that the crew failed to adequately manage the situation during the two hours they had to wait before departing for Incheon. She said stranded passengers were not offered water, leaving those with children upset. 'Some even said they would rather get off at Gimpo before the plane departed for Incheon.' Lee said the captain and crew apologised over the public announcement system as the plane headed to Incheon. Other passengers hit out at the airline for failing to provide a clear explanation. A passenger, identified as Ryu, said during the two hours before departing for Incheon, no clear explanation was given over the landing error nor was there 'any effort to reassure passengers'. AirAsia X, in a statement, clarified that the flight was diverted to Gimpo for refuelling following air traffic congestion at Incheon due to adverse weather conditions. AirAsia said the captain followed standard operating procedures, including keeping passengers informed of the diversion in English initially. However, there was a miscommunication in the cabin crew announcement upon landing, which the captain promptly clarified, it added. AirAsia X CEO Benyamin Ismail said: 'We will also review our internal announcements and onboard information-sharing processes to ensure greater clarity in such situations.' Benyamin said travel vouchers would be offered to affected passengers as a goodwill gesture.

Affin Group posts 22.1 per cent rise in first-half profit to RM358 million
Published on: Friday, August 15, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 15, 2025 Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: Affin Group posted a profit before tax (PBT) after zakat of RM358 million for the six months ended June 30 this year, marking a 22.1 per cent year-on-year increase from RM293.1 million in the same period last year. The growth was supported by a RM160.9 million rise in net income, partly offset by a RM80.2 million increase in impairment allowances. The Group's gross loans and financing grew by 7.3 per cent to RM74.1 billion, while customer deposits rose 9.8 per cent to RM78.2 billion, with its Current Account and Savings Account (Casa) ratio improving to 28.2 per cent from 25.9 per cent a year earlier. President and Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Wan Razly Abdullah said the performance reflected the success of the Group's Axelerate 2028 (AX28) Plan, supported by the launch of its AffinAlwaysX mobile banking app in May 2025. 'Our inaugural US$300 million Senior Unsecured Notes issuance was 3.5 times oversubscribed, signalling strong global investor confidence and strengthening our cross-border financing capabilities,' he said. He noted that despite a 19.6 per cent year-on-year increase in CASA deposits, there was a 9.2 per cent quarter-on-quarter drop due to shifts towards fixed deposits, adding that a new Casa payroll strategy is underway to boost growth. 'Affin's MSCI ESG rating upgrade from 'A' to 'AA' and a RM13 billion loan pipeline highlight the momentum we have, even with some deals temporarily delayed by market conditions,' Datuk Wan Razly added. Affin Islamic Bank Berhad recorded a PBT of RM185.4 million, up 24.6 per cent from RM148.8 million, driven by an RM80.6 million increase in net financing income, while non-interest income for the Group grew 14.3 per cent to RM324.8 million. The Group's gross impaired loan ratio improved to 1.83 per cent from 1.94 per cent at the end of 2024, with a loan loss coverage of 80.43 per cent and a loan loss reserve of 123.08 per cent, alongside strong capital and liquidity ratios exceeding regulatory requirements.
