The Kansas City Chiefs have remained a model of consistency in the
NFL
, but their offense no longer packs the same explosive punch it once did. Quarterback
Patrick Mahomes
, once feared for his deep-ball prowess and highlight-reel throws, has seen a noticeable decline in his long-range passing.
Even with two Super Bowl titles in the last three years and a 15-win regular season just behind them, it's clear the offensive dynamic has changed a fair bit.
The Kansas City Chiefs' offensive style is changing — and Patrick Mahomes' deep-pass magic is fading
Rewind to 2022 and the Chiefs were electric. Patrick Mahomes threw for over 5,000 yards and 41 touchdowns en route to the coveted MVP title. Kansas City's offense set the tone every game, torching defenses with explosive plays. But those fireworks have long fizzled.
In 2023 and 2024, Kansas City's attack turned far more conservative, while the defense stepped up to carry more of the load. Wins are still coming, but they are often gritty, low-scoring battles – a stark contrast to the big-play spectacles fans were once used to.
Breaking down what's behind the drop in Mahomes' long throws downfield
Patrick Mahomes made his name slinging it deep, often finding targets 20 or more yards downfield with precision. Between 2018 and 2022, he averaged 4.3 deep pass attempts per game, piling up 45 touchdowns to just 12 interceptions.
His passer rating on those throws? A stunning 112.3. But things took a turn. In the past two seasons (2023-2024), those attempts dropped to just three per game. The production dropped off a cliff – only four touchdowns, eight interceptions and a steep decline in passer rating to just 47.7.
NFL Analyst says there were warning signs in 2022
NFL analyst Nick Wright took a closer look at this regression during an interview – and believes the warning signs were already visible during Mahomes' second MVP run.
'He kind of stopped throwing deep in 2022, the year he won league MVP, because there was so much run-after-catch stuff. The 2023 it seems like gets chalked up to drops, and nobody cared anyway because they won the Super Bowl. Last year, for me, was the perfect storm of sucking in the deep passing game.
'
Mahomes: "Got to be better at throwing down the field," is NFC Eagles to lose? | FIRST THINGS FIRST
So what does all of this mean moving forward? The Kansas Chiefs are still very much a contender, with Patrick Mahomes leading the way and a stout defense backing him up.
But the days of him launching 60-yard bombs every week may be behind us – at least for now.
FAQs
Q: Why has Patrick Mahomes stopped throwing deep as often?
A: Several factors are at play, including offensive scheme changes and a greater reliance on short passes and yards after the catch.
Q: Is Mahomes still playing at an MVP level?
A: While he remains elite, his deep passing stats have significantly declined compared to his earlier MVP seasons.
Q: Are the Chiefs still a top NFL team despite this change?
A: Yes -- they have won a Super Bowl and 15 regular-season games recently, showing they can adapt and win in different ways.

Micah Parsons' Net Worth 2025, Current Annual Salary and More
Micah Parsons' net worth: Image via X Micah Parsons has been the crown jewel of the Dallas Cowboys' defense for almost half a decade. However, as he approached the final year of his contract with the team, the situation took a peculiar turn. Things changed quite fast when the 6 ft 3 demanded a few years' extension in his contract. The talks with Jerry Jones and other leadership have gone nuclear. This Friday, Parsons broke the stalemate by demanding a trade, citing complaints of ignorance and non-cooperation regarding his contract with the Cowboys. Recently, his agent, Jones, questioned whose identity, reached out to the team to hammer out the details and their potential mindset about the hanging contract talks, but all he got was a closed door. The 26-year-old clearly has had enough, but that doesn't really dismiss the paramount net worth he garnered from his rookie NFL years all along. A complete look at Micah Parsons' net worth amidst the contract standoff At just 26, Parsons was able to stack a total of a whopping $7 million. His first contract with Dallas back in 2021 is worth $17 million over four seasons. He entered the Cowboys' locker room with a $9.8 million bonus. His average annual salary is reportedly $4.2 million. He was possibly expecting a historical hike in his contract reaching beyond the mark of 136 million for a non-quarterback player, a record held by CeeDee Lamb. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like A Smarter Life Insurance Path: How Seniors Are Making Informed Choices Compare Club Get Quote Undo But destiny and Jerry Jones had some other plans. The continued silence and the ongoing back and forth since January irked the athlete so much that he finally decided to cut the tie. Yes, Dallas has paid Parsons enough. But since they're in a dilemma now to continue paying him (as per his worth) further, it's pertinent to note that the player has several different money sources that contributed to his wealth. Know the sources behind Micah Parsons' giant wealth The 2021 defensive Rookie of the Year has got the global off-screen presence to secure several endorsement deals with prominent brands like Nike, Bose, State Farm, Nocco, Pizza Hut, Mentality, Old Spice, and C4 Energy. While his income from all these deals isn't that clear, it's not less than millions, significantly boosting his $7 million empire.. But no matter what, it's not even a doubt that the Cowboys have fed him pretty abundantly. In the first year, he bagged $3,105,417, followed by $3,881,771 in 2022. This figure reached up to $4,658,125 in 2023 and $5,434,479 in 2024. Parsons' net worth has consistently moved upward since signing the NFL rookie contract. The stat says so. But given how Jones and the higher-ups kept him guessing for the next step, it's clear that their interest quotient has gone down. And demanding a trade was simply the most feasible move Parsons could make from his end. Now, only time will unfold the rest. 'He ran every single image by her,' a source told Shuter. 'He didn't want to post anything she wasn't 100% comfortable with. He respects her privacy, always has.' This careful approach to social media marks the first time Kelce has posted Swift on his Instagram since they began dating in 2023. The Kansas City Chiefs tight end shared multiple photos with Swift and family, including matching hats and a photo of them ice skating. In one image, fans even spotted that both of their phone screens featured pictures of each other. Posting with Taylor Swift's permission The insider further added, 'It was a sign of respect. He's proud of her, but more importantly, he wants her to feel safe.' Despite their relationship being in the public eye since September 2023, this post was the couple's first official appearance on Kelce's feed. The Instagram post was captioned, 'Had some adventures this offseason, kept it.' According to a separate source who spoke to PEOPLE, 'Travis posting Taylor on his Instagram for the first time wasn't random, it was intentional.'
