Banita Sandhu supports Deepika Padukone, says she was ‘blacklisted' by a film industry for speaking up against 18-hour work shift: ‘I stood up for myself'
Actor Deepika Padukone and filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga's recent Spirit controversy has stirred a discussion in the film industry. With several celebs speaking up in support or against the actor's 8-hour work shift demand, October actor Banita Sandhu is the latest one to weigh in on the matter. In an interview with SCREEN, the actor recalled she stood against the producers as they made her work 16-18 hour shifts for a film, after which she might have been 'blacklisted' from the industry. She also revealed that on the contrary, there are many unions to support actors and crew in Hollywood.
Banita, who has worked in a bunch Hollywood projects (Eternal Beauty (2019), Bridgerton Season 3) earlier, said that they have strict work hours in Hollywood. 'It's so important. One thing that we have in the West is really strong unions. They really protect actors and crew. I have always been a firm believer of 12-hour turnovers for everybody on sets. We are not at war, we are making movies. I don't think anyone's mental health should be sacrificed for that. At the end of the day, it's a job and everyone deserves an adequate amount of rest and sleep. It's basic human rights,' she shared.
Although the situation in Bollywood is getting better now, the actor, without naming the industry recalled how she was exploited with the long working hours. 'With Hindi cinema, it is getting better now. But early in my career, when I really didn't understand how industries work, I just assumed this was the way to work. I did 16-18 hours a day shifts, where producers aligned my schedule, I would shoot the whole day and then fly at night. I didn't sleep for 24 hours straight. I stood up for myself and the crew. I told the producers that this is not okay. Maybe, I am blacklisted from that industry now, but I don't care. I just believe in standing up for what's right,' she said.

When asked about being offered opportunties in Hindi cinema, after receiving critical acclamation in October (2018), opposite Varun Dhawan. 'During that time of my life, I wasn't fully living in India. I came to shoots and I was also shooting a lot of western stuff, I was doing my college in London as well. I wasn't as present as I could have been. There's a perception that I went and came back, but for me, I never went away, I was always working, just in a different country,' she said.
Banita added, 'After October released, I graduated and I shot for atleast 3 projects in a year – in Hollywood and South. I got work from all different parts of the world, maybe not much from Bollywood. I would have been filthy rich if I moved to India as that time. I remember many producers telling me we wanted you after October in so and so film, but we didn't know where to find you. It works that way in Bollywood, if you're out of sight, then out of mind.'
Banita Sandhu is often a target of trolling for her personal life. She was also rumored to be dating Punjabi singer AP Dhillon. 'I literally don't care. I have honestly been so blessed that people are actually really nice to me. Maybe one in a hundred, someone says something nasty. I have never been a very public person. I think that work speaks for itself. I have recently started being a bit more pro-active. Even me moving to India is a part of me trying. I grew up in the UK, I also wanted to live with my family. There's paparazzi everywhere now, your life is more exposed. It has taken me a really long time to accept that I have a public life,' she expressed.
Talking about her aspirations in the Bollywood industry, the actor said, 'I would love to do a commercial movie. It's something that I grew up watching. It would be great if I have one of my own songs. I have never really done a dance sequence, never got the opportunity. People don't know but I used to dance a lot while growing up, I would love to do that.'
Banita Sandhu will next be seen in Zee5's murder mystery Detective Sherdil. It also stars Diljit Dosanjh, Boman Irani, Diana Penty, and Sumeet Vyas.

Sitaare Zameen Par director RS Prasanna Interview: I would love to see more feel-good films
Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par marks the second Hindi film of RS Prasanna. He had earlier directed the Ayushmann Khurrana starrer Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (2017), which was a remake of his own 2013 quirky Tamil film, Kalyana Samayal Saadham. For Prasanna, working with Aamir for the film was like a dream. He recalls being moved by Aamir's films, be it Lagaan (2001) or Taare Zameen Par (2007). 'For me, cinema has always been from the point of view of the audience. I literally look up to cinema because I am the audience who sits in the front row. So, I never thought that one day I would get to direct Aamir sir after having seen all his films as an audience,' says the filmmaker. Prasanna admits that it was difficult for him to remain objective during the film's shoot as he was so starstruck with Aamir. He met the superstar for the first time at his Mumbai home and was surprised with his humility. 'We were having food together sitting on the floor. Within fifteen minutes, I felt like, is it really Amir sir? He made me quite comfortable and was open to let me say anything to him,' he says. It was also during these discussions about Sitaare Zameen Par, which is a remake of the 2018 Spanish film, Champions, that Prasanna would keep referencing Taare Zameen Par. 'I would keep torturing him with questions about Taare Zameen Par as to how certain scenes were filmed and how did the songs come in,' he says, adding that it was during the pre-production process that Aamir thought of aligning it with the 2007 film. 'One day, he said that Sitaare Zameen Par also belongs in the same emotional landscape. ' So why don't we make it sound similar to that? The audience also will know, what are they in for'. That's how it happened,' recalls Prasanna.

Shah Rukh, who had previously met the cast of the film, walked the red carpet and greeted actors Vedant Sharma, Naman Misra, Aayush Bhansali and Aroush Datta, among others. Watch | Aamir Khan and Gauri Spratt arrive hand in hand at Sitaare Zameen Par screening A post shared by SCREEN (@ieentertainment) Aamir Khan is making an attempt to bring back the traditional theatre viewing experience with Sitaare Zameen Par. He announced during the press run for the film that he doesn't want to release the film on OTT, and he wants people to come to the theatre with their friends and family to enjoy the movie. Staying true to his word, Aamir also rejected a Rs 120 crore OTT deal from Amazon Prime Video. According to trade tracker Sacnilk, the advance bookings for the film have reached Rs 2.32 crore without accounting for block seats. The total number with the block seats is Rs 5.76 crore. Watch | Sitaare Zameen Par screening: Rekha, Javed Akhtar, Vicky Kaushal and others rally behind Aamir Khan On the other hand, trade analyst Taran Adarsh told India Today that the film could very well make much more as the weekend dawns upon the makers. He said, 'The box office run (of Aamir Khan) currently depends on word-of-mouth. Since the promotion for the film is very light, now the film's success depends only on Aamir Khan's face-value. For the opening weekend, it could be around Rs 30 crore.' Directed by RS Prasanna, Sitaare Zameen Par features Aamir Khan, Genelia Deshmukh, Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishnan Varma, Vedant Sharmaa, Naman Misra, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain and Ashish Pendse, among others. The story has been penned by Divy Sidhi Sharma, and the film has been jointly produced by Aamir and Aparna Purohit. Music for the film has been composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, and the lyrics have been written by Amitabh Bhattacharya.

Sitaare Zameen Par box office prediction: Early estimates not in sync with Aamir Khan's stardom, says expert
Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan returns to the big screen after a gap of three years. His long absence could lead to one of two outcomes – either a massive turnout at the box office from eager fans, or the risk that audiences may have forgotten the unique magic only Aamir brings to the screen. Ahead of its Friday release, Livemint reached out to industry analyst Taran Adarsh for his early box office predictions. It seems Aamir Khan's spiritual sequel to Taare Zameen Par might see an opening business of a single digit. According to the industry tracker Sacnilk, as of 9 pm Thursday, Sitaare Zameen Par collected ₹ 2.21 crore from the advance booking. Considering blocked seats, the film's revenue now stands at ₹ 5.59 crore after selling over 79,000 tickets so far. Taran Adarsh weighed in, 'The advance booking is not in sync with the star status of Aamir Khan. Yes, the advances should have been better because Aamir Khan returns to the big screen after a big gap with his own production, starring in it. It should have been better.' 'I genuinely believe Sitaare Zameen Par is a word-of-mouth film. It should grow with word of mouth,' he added. Sitaare Zameen Par will be screened in 8,747 shows across India. The film will be released in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Releasing on 20 June, the film sees no major clash at the ticket window. Adarsh points out, 'The film enjoys the advantage of a solo release. There's Housefull 5, which will be entering the 3rd week tomorrow, so I guess there's not much of an opposition for this film. It's an open run as of now.' Sitaare Zameen Par will mark its debut exclusively in cinema halls, going against the current trend of OTT releases. Unlike the usual 4 to 8-week window between theatrical and digital premieres, the film will not be released on any streaming platform at all, as confirmed by Aamir Khan. Adarsh opined about the new strategies adopted by Aamir and his team. "There was always an 8-week gap between theatrical and OTT release. This time, Aamir has decided to only release it in cinemas. It all depends on how the audience takes to this film, how the word of mouth is, and then I guess we will be able to know if this idea of having a straight theatrical release without any OTT release works or not. Right now, it's a wait and watch." "Not just Aamir, but the entire industry is looking at it because this is something that has not happened in the past. People sign lucrative contracts with digital players, and depending on how the film fares, after 10–12 weeks or maybe later, they premiere it on a digital platform. We will be looking at it closely. Theatrical business is very important. I stand with Aamir on that front." However, it is certain that the film might not register a double-digit figure on Friday. The business is likely to grow over the weekend. 'The opening numbers, to me, are looking to be in single digits unless a miraculous turnaround happens on Friday and the film gathers momentum, picks up post-noon shows, and registers double digits. As of now, Thursday, it is looking at a single-digit opening,' the industry insider concluded. Sitaare Zameen Par is directed by RS Prasanna. It is produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit. It also stars Genelia in the lead, alongside 10 special actors in the cast.
