Heavy rains bring Maharashtra to its knees; air, road, rail services hit

Mumbai received a record rainfall of nearly 300 mm, while a rise in the Mithi river level triggered evacuation of over 1,000 people as the second straight day of downpour on Tuesday severely disrupted road, rail traffic and crippled normal life.
A Monorail train, too, came to a halt between Mysore Colony and Bhakti Park stations. Operations were carried out and over 400 passengers were rescued. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said all the passengers inside a Monorail train stuck between two stations in Mumbai will be rescued safely, and an inquiry will be conducted into the incident.
Flooded streets, stranded commuters and vehicles struggling to navigate the inundated roads once again highlighted the financial capital's annual challenge in dealing with the monsoon rains.
Fadnavis, who reviewed the flood situation with the disaster management department, said that the next 48 hours would be crucial for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts, which remain on high alert.
Commuters faced severe hardship as local train services of the Central Railway were disrupted on its main and harbour lines due to submergence of tracks due to torrential rains, while flight operations, too, were affected.
At least 12 flights were diverted to cities including Ahmedabad, Surat and Hyderabad. 90 arrivals were disrupted resulting in delays, according to data from flight monitoring portal FlightRadar24. Four departures were cancelled and 188 flights were delayed due to reduced visibility at the airport.

No More Goa Detours For Konkan Trip: Sindhudurg's Chipi Airport To Resume Services Soon

Last Updated: The Chipi airport, located in Parule-Chipi village of Sindhudurg district, was inaugurated with the promise of connecting the picturesque Konkan region with major cities In major relief for Sindhudurg residents and boost to Konkan's tourism sector, the state cabinet on Wednesday approved resumption of operations at the Chipi airport, which had remained non-operational in recent weeks due to technical challenges. The Chipi airport, located in Parule-Chipi village of Sindhudurg district, was inaugurated with the promise of connecting the picturesque Konkan region with major cities. However, the suspension of flights had forced both locals and tourists to fall back on road travel or rely on airports in neighbouring Goa, causing inconvenience and hampering regional tourism. With the cabinet's approval, the services will now restart under the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) model, ensuring sustained operations and solutions for night-landing facilities. 'The resumption of services at Chipi Airport will benefit not just Sindhudurg but the entire Konkan region. Tourists from Maharashtra and outside will find it easier to access our beautiful coastline. We are making every effort to resume flights before Ganeshotsav," said Minister Nitesh Rane who represents Konkan region in the state assembly. He also thanked Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the cabinet for prioritising this decision. For years, Konkan's connectivity has been a challenge. While the region is a magnet for tourists, with its pristine beaches, temples, forts, and world-famous Malvani cuisine, the lack of direct air access limited its growth. Tourists from Mumbai, Pune, and even other states had to either embark on long, exhausting road trips or fly into Goa's Dabolim and Mopa airports before making the onward journey into Maharashtra's Konkan. With Chipi airport set to resume operations, that extra travel burden will finally be lifted. This decision is also timely, with the upcoming Ganeshotsav festival, when thousands of Mumbaikars and Maharashtrians travel to their native towns and villages in Konkan. Until now, overcrowded trains, long traffic jams, and limited alternatives made the journey a stressful experience. The reopening of Chipi airport is expected to transform this scenario, offering faster and more convenient travel for devotees heading home for the festival. Economically, the airport's revival is expected to be a game-changer. Local businesses – from hotels and homestays to transport operators, handicraft sellers, and small eateries – stand to gain from the surge in tourist arrivals. Direct air connectivity will not only attract domestic travellers, but also pave the way for international charter flights in the future, giving Konkan's tourism sector a much-needed boost. The airport will also open new opportunities for local youth in terms of employment in aviation-linked services, hospitality, and tourism. With VGF support resolving critical operational gaps, the Chipi airport could finally emerge as a reliable hub for air travel in Maharashtra's coastal belt. For Sindhudurg and the Konkan region, the cabinet nod is not just about reopening an airport, it is about unlocking the region's potential and ensuring that its beauty and culture are accessible to the world. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Mumbai: Thane-Airport Corridor, Underground Metro To Gateway Of India Get Green Signal

One of the biggest highlights is the 25-km elevated corridor connecting Thane directly with the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. The Maharashtra government on Tuesday approved the construction of a 25-km-long elevated corridor to link Thane with the upcoming Navi Mumbai international airport and also underground Metro Line 11 from Wadala depot in Mumbai to the iconic Gateway of India. The decisions were taken at a meeting of Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The panel cleared several major infrastructure projects aimed at boosting transport connectivity and urban development across key cities, including Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Nagpur. A statement from CM office said Fadnavis hoped the initiatives would accelerate the state's development and modernise public transport systems. The committee approved the construction of additional railway lines to strengthen the Pune-Lonavala corridor. This will improve regional connectivity and ease traffic congestion in Pune, while also supporting industrial, residential, and commercial growth along the route, it said. Notably, ticket fares will remain unchanged, CM Fadnavis said. The cabinet cleared the construction of a 25-km-long elevated corridor to directly link Thane with the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. The project will provide high-speed connectivity for commuters and businesses in the region. The much-anticipated Metro Line 11, a 16-km fully underground corridor from Wadala depot to Gateway of India, has been approved. The Rs 24,000 crore project will be funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Key stations will include Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Chowk and Horniman Circle. The project also includes a joint commercial complex with BEST, generating additional revenue for the transport body. A new township has been approved for development in Nagpur, alongside the construction of a new ring road to support urban expansion and decongest existing routes, the statement said. As part of Phase 1 of the Pune Metro project, Balajinagar, Bibwewadi, Swargate and Katraj stations have been approved, further enhancing the city's urban mobility. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Schools, Colleges Closed In Thane, Panvel, Navi Mumbai & Lonavala; No Holiday For Mumbai

Last Updated: School Holiday News: Schools in Thane, Panvel, Navi Mumbai, and Lonavala remain closed today due to heavy rains, while Mumbai schools stay open as BMC has not announced a holiday. Amid an IMD Red Alert warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, all schools, colleges, training centres, and anganwadis in Thane, Panvel, Navi Mumbai, and Lonavala will remain closed on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. However, educational institutions in Mumbai are functioning as usual after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) clarified that no holiday had been declared for the city. Normal life across several districts has been thrown out of gear due to continuous downpours, with flood-like situations being reported in low-lying areas. On Wednesday, a message claiming that all schools and colleges in Mumbai would remain shut on August 20 due to a 'red' alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) went viral on social media. The fake notice, designed to look like an official post from BMC's verified account, spread rapidly across WhatsApp groups and other platforms, causing confusion among students and parents. BMC quickly issued a clarification on X (formerly Twitter), dismissing the notice as fake. 'This message is fake. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has not issued any such information through its official social media platforms," the civic body posted, while also sharing a screenshot of the forged message. While Mumbai is on orange alert, neighbouring Raigad district is under a red alert with predictions of heavy to very heavy rainfall. IMD has also forecast heavy showers in parts of Thane and Palghar. Flight operations at Mumbai airport are likely to face delays, while local train services may also be impacted due to the rain. Commuters have been advised to plan their travel accordingly. According to meteorological reports, the intense rainfall is linked to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, coupled with strengthening monsoon winds. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reviewed the flood situation with the disaster management department and warned that the next 48 hours will be critical for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts, all under varying levels of alert. view comments First Published: August 20, 2025, 08:37 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
