A STRUGGLING car manufacturer is to shut its flagship factory which employs 2,400 workers, with its boss calling it a 'tough but necessary decision'.
Vehicle production at Nissan's Oppama plant in Kanagawa Prefecture south of Tokyo, will end at the end of the 2027 fiscal year, in March 2028, the Japanese automaker said today.

After that, all models that had been made or scheduled for production at Oppama will be made at Nissan Motor Kyushu, in Fukuoka Prefecture.
The Oppama plant has been a prized symbol for Nissan Motor Corp., which rolled out its Leaf electric car there in 2010, ahead of key rivals.
Chief Executive Ivan Espinosa, who took on the job in April, said the decision was extremely difficult, calling the Oppama plant an icon for Nissan.
He promised employees will be treated fairly and responsibly, with transfer offers to other locations, or other work in the area in consultation with the trade union.
The plant now employs 2,400 people.
'I believe it's a vital step toward overcoming our current challenges and building a sustainable future,' he said.
'The world is changing by the minute,' he told reporters at a news conference at Nissan's Yokohama headquarters.
Espinosa said the company was in talks on possibly selling the factory land, or using it for another purpose.
He declined to give details.
Even if a buyer is not found, the decision on ending production will not change, he added.

The plant's closure was expected, as the maker of the Infiniti luxury models and March subcompact has said repeatedly that it is restructuring its operations to boost its profitability, including by consolidating production sites.
Nissan says the tariff policies of US President Donald Trump have hurt its bottom line.
Earlier this year, Nissan said it was slashing about 15% of its global work force, or about 20,000 employees, which would include a 9,000 head count reduction announced late last year, including in China.
The company has been racking up losses, hurt by slipping vehicle sales in China and elsewhere, huge restructuring costs and ballooning inventories.
Earlier this year, Nissan said it's reducing the number of its auto plants to 10 from 17 to create a leaner, more resilient business.
At that time, it didn't say which plants were being closed but confirmed the closures will include factories in Japan.
It's also reducing production capacity to 2.5 million units from 3.5 million.
The latest announcement concludes the production closures in Japan, according to Espinosa.
Nissan racked up a loss of 670.9 billion yen (£3.36 billion) for the fiscal year through March, down from a 426.6 billion yen (£2.14 billion) profit recorded in the previous fiscal year.
Espinosa replaced Makoto Uchida, who stepped down to take responsibility for the faltering results.

One of its branches in Rugby Central is set to close after it recently launched a closing down sale. While they haven't yet confirmed a date, staff told Warwickshire World that "it could be next April". Last month its Keighley, West Yorkshire store closed its doors on June 14. In the run up to the closure, the store offered 20 per cent discounts across items. Another store in Leamington Spa was offering discounts of up to 50 per cent as part of an "everything must go" sale. The Warwickshire branch is yet to announce a final closure date. Two other stores - in Halifax and Andover - shut for good in April. The closures come even after a financial turnaround that saw it return to profit. Clintons said that rising costs driven by labour tax hikes and the increasing minimum wage continued to make some of its stores financially unviable. The popular card shop announced a pre-tax profit of £8 million for the financial year ending 29 June 2024. Like many businesses, Clintons now faces higher employer national insurance contributions, which have risen from 13.8% to 15%. Additionally, the threshold at which these contributions must be paid has been lowered from £9,100 to £5,000. These changes to the tax system were confirmed by the Chancellor in the Autumn Budget last October and came into effect on 1 April. At the same time, the national minimum wage saw a notable increase, rising to £12.21 per hour. For workers aged 18-20, the minimum wage increased by £1.40 to £10 per hour. Clintons was first launched back in 1968 - and quickly became a go-to for Brits looking for greetings cards. At its peak the chain boasted more than 1,000 branches across the country. This has now dropped to just 163 brick-and-mortar stores.

Embassies should see cars clamped for congestion charge debts
Baroness Jones of Moulsecoomb said the Government had 'far too much patience' with indebted foreign governments, while Lib Dem foreign affairs spokesman Lord Purvis of Tweed called for ministers to discuss outstanding fees with US President Donald Trump during his September visit. Responding, Foreign Office minister Baroness Chapman of Darlington described diplomacy as 'an art'. She said the fee for driving in inner London was a 'charge' rather than a tax, which embassies should pay. According to Transport for London, the US embassy based south of the River in Nine Elms owes almost £15.5 million in congestion charge debts. The Japanese mission faces debts of more than £10.6 million, while the Chinese embassy racked up a £10.3 million debt between 2003 and March 31 2025. Lord Purvis referred to a diplomatic reception held at the Foreign Office in central London and asked: 'Should we not start instituting a drop-off and collection fee at King Charles Street just as long as we get our money back?' The Liberal Democrat also said Mr Trump 'would certainly not want a reputation of not paying fines' and said: 'When he comes for the state visit, can we ensure that this is part of the agenda so that there's no congestion in the city of London from the American delegation and they pay us what they owe?' Baroness Chapman replied that there was a 'whole range of measures' open to the Government, and that she would 'take on board' the one which Lord Purvis suggested. 'Others include encouraging the use perhaps of public transport or cycling or walking around our wonderful city, but he suggests that we raise these matters directly with our counterparts, and I can assure him that we do just that,' the minister added. Former London Assembly Labour leader Lord Harris of Haringey asked: 'Would it, for example, be possible to clamp the cars that have done this, because I suspect that might concentrate the minds?' Following him, the Green Party's Baroness Jones said: 'This has been going on ever since the congestion charge first came in. 'They've racked up these debts and I love Lord Harris's idea – we should clamp them all. 'We have a record of which cars have infringed the congestion charge. We clamp them all.' Baroness Chapman told peers: 'All I would say is that diplomacy is an art and it comes more naturally to some than to others perhaps.' She added: 'I think it's right that we don't escalate this issue above some of our very real concerns around security and defence and trade that we seek to work very closely with our counterparts on.' Their exchanges were triggered by a question from Labour peer Lord Faulkner of Worcester, who asked about Government efforts to claw back unpaid business rates, parking fines and London congestion charges in April and May. Baroness Chapman said that the Government had received 31 responses to the exercise earlier this year. 'Some agreed to settle debts, other disputed charges, and some refused to pay the London congestion charge claiming exemption under the Vienna Convention,' the minister said. 'FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) action since April 3 2025 has helped reduce national non-domestic rates debt by £287,142, car parking fines debt by £7,035 and London congestion charge debt by £7,430.' To laughter, Conservative shadow foreign office minister Lord Callanan said: 'I think there is unity across the House on this one. 'I think we're all amused by the prospect of some poor parking warden having to put a ticket on President Trump's limousine and what might happen to him from the actions of the secret service. 'But it is of course that conduct of diplomatic staff is a reflection of important values, respect, dignity and mutual recognition between nations, so following on from the reply that she gave to the Liberal Democrats, will (Baroness Chapman) consider linking future privileges or engagement opportunities to the good standing of diplomatic missions in their civic responsibilities, so as to encourage greater accountability?' The minister said she would keep the situation 'under close consideration'.
