Cardinals trade idea sends $8.2 million All-Star closer to Mariners
It might be wise for them to capitalize on the value of some of their trade chips on expiring contracts that likely won't be back in 2026. They have three strong trade chips that could bring back solid returns.

Their biggest trade chip is two-time All-Star closer Ryan Helsley, who hasn't been quite as dominant this year but is still one of the top relievers in Major League Baseball.
In The Athletic's latest big board of the Top 40 trade candidates, Helsley was considered a top trade chip, and the Seattle Mariners were listed as a possible fit.
"St. Louis said recently it doesn't intend to deal from its bullpen, but it will re-assess throughout July. A closer who's received down-ballot Cy Young votes in two of the last three seasons, Helsley hasn't been as sharp in 2025, with five blown saves. Unlike some other Cardinals, he'd be a pure rental."

In 2024, Helsley saved 49 games, setting a Cardinals franchise record. He also posted a 2.04 ERA and was later named the National League Reliever of the Year.
This year, while not as dominant, he has still been effective, posting a 3.19 ERA in 31 appearances and recording 18 saves. He can still bring back a solid haul of prospects if St. Louis decides to sell.
The Cardinals held onto him in the offseason, missing a chance to capitalize on his value. The farm system is currently depleted, so St. Louis would be wise to trade Helsley and bring back a solid return while they still can.
While in contention, the Cardinals likely will not be able to compete with the likes of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers in the postseason.
It will be interesting to see how St. Louis approaches the deadline.

The New York Yankees blew multiple leads before losing to the Miami Marlins 13-12 at LoanDepot Park on Friday night. He did manage to get the Yankees through the eighth inning without giving up another run. Doval replaced Bednar to start the ninth inning with the Yankees leading 12-10. He allowed two hits and three runs (one earned) in 0.1 innings to take the loss. It wasn't entirely on Doval, though — he was undone in part by a horrible error by another new addition, Jose Caballero. Playing his first game with the Yankees, Caballero misplayed a ground ball hit to right field. With the ball rolling nearly to the warning track, the game-tying runs were able to score and the winning run was suddenly set up on third. Four pitches later, the Yankees' collapse was complete thanks to a dribbler that didn't even make it to the infield grass. YES Network broadcaster Michael Kay called it the Yankees' "worst loss of the year." Cardinals GM reflects on team-altering deadline
The trade deadline has come and gone for the St. Louis Cardinals. Hovering around .500 on the season, the team made several moves to gear up towards the future. The Cardinals dealt off closer Ryan Helsley, Steven Matz, and Phil Maton at the deadline. Per Katie Woo of The Athletic, Cardinals GM John Mozeliak's intention at the deadline was to sell, and prepare for what's ahead. 'The goal of this trading deadline was about the future, Mozeliak said, per Woo. 'I don't think it's necessarily about the immediate future. It's about the long-term view of the St. Louis Cardinals.' According to Woo, the Cardinals' haul in return for the trades includes a wealth of minor league prospects. SS Jesus Baez, RHP Frank Elissalt and RHP Nate Dohm came in return for the trade that sent Helsley to the New York Mets, RHP Mason Molina and LHP Skylar Hales came from the Texas Rangers in exchange for Phil Maton, and Red Sox prospect Blaze Jordan was the return for Steven Matz. 'We went into this deadline trying to move our expiring contracts,' Mozeliak said, per Woo. 'We were able to do that. The goal of these moves was to position the organization for future talent, not necessarily just guys that are knocking on the door for big-league opportunities next year. It was really about trying to create as much prospect value as possible, and we felt we achieved that.' After evidently kicking the bucket on this current season, the hope for St. Louis is that their return packages can make an impact for the future.
