LSU football defensive tackle Dominick McKinley ready for a breakout in second season
"He's such a great kid," Kelly said. "He's so grounded. He wants to get better every single day. And he has elite strength and numbers from that perspective."
Kelly's notes align with the recognition McKinley got from The Athletic's Bruce Feldman recently. He put McKinley at No. 6 on his annual list of college football freaks, which spotlights the sport's top athletes.
McKinley overcame an injury during fall camp last year to make 10 appearances and he came alive toward the back half of 2024. His 69.4 PFF defensive grade ranked fifth among SEC true freshmen at his position. He played 146 defensive snaps, including 23 between the Ole Miss game and the Texas Bowl against Baylor.
Through 10 games, McKinley made seven tackles, three tackles for loss, three sacks, and a fumble return. He shined brightest against Oklahoma, totaling three pressures and two sacks.
"He's still learning," Kelly said. "[Defensive line] Coach [Kyle] Williams has got him, with him right on his hip every day, but he's enjoyable to coach."

Clemson football's ranking in 2025 preseason AP Top 25 poll revealed
Only 19 days remain until the Clemson Tigers take the field on Aug. 30 for their much-hyped 2025 college football season opener against the LSU Tigers at Memorial Stadium. After the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll was unveiled last week, many argued that Clemson deserved to be ranked higher than No. 6 Monday saw release of the preseason AP Top 25 poll, and the media members who make up the AP's poll agreed with that sentiment. Clemson debuted at No. 4 in the AP poll, one spot below the reigning national champion Ohio State Buckeyes at No. 3 and one spot ahead of the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs. Clemson was ranked ahead of two teams that landed in front of the Tigers in the Coaches Poll: Georgia and Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish were No. 6 in Monday's AP poll after being ranked fifth by the coaches. The Texas Longhorns earned the top spot in the AP poll, while Penn State was ranked No. 2. Besides Clemson, two other ACC teams cracked the preseason AP poll. The Miami Hurricanes debuted at No. 10, and the SMU Mustangs were ranked No. 16. Clemson faces SMU on Oct. 18 in Death Valley. Two opponents on Clemson's nonconference schedule were ranked in the top 15. LSU debuted at No. 9 in the AP poll, with rival South Carolina ranked No. 13 -- the same spot both teams landed in the Coaches Poll. Clemson was ranked No. 14 in last year's preseason AP poll. Behind Cade Klubnik's stellar 2024 season that included 3,639 passing yards and 36 touchdowns to only five interceptions, the Tigers went 10-4 and won the ACC for the ninth time under Dabo Swinney to earn a trip to the 12-team College Football Playoff. Apple Wants To Expand Live Sports Offering With MLB Playoffs
As Apple continues to bolster its Apple TV+ offerings, the company has shown a steadily increasing interest in broadcasting live sporting events. The company's latest move might see it expand its Major League Baseball coverage to include Wild Card games during the MLB postseason. According to a report from The Athletic, Apple is making a push that would see it secure the rights to Sunday Night Baseball along with some MLB playoff games. Should Apple and MLB ultimately strike a deal, it would be a nice complement to the company's Friday Night Baseball programming. As with all streaming negotiations with major sports leagues, there is no shortage of competition. The report notes that MLB is also conducting negotiations with companies like ESPN, NBC, and Netflix. Of course, the scope of programming rights each company is aiming to secure varies wildly. Apple's specific approach, as one would expect, appears to be quite measured. All in all, it seems content to slowly but surely expand its live sports offerings without spending vast amounts of cash to secure more expansive streaming deals with the likes of the NFL or NBA. Last year, for example, Netflix for the first time aired two NFL games on Christmas Day. Netflix shelled out a lot of money for the broadcast rights and the gamble paid off in a big way. According to reports, Netflix's foray into NFL streaming attracted 65 million US viewers. Amazon has also gotten involved with the NFL. In 2022, the company became the exclusive platform to watch Thursday Night Football. And Peacock, starting in 2023, began airing exclusive NFL playoff games. In short, as streamers look to solidify their subscriber base, securing rights to live sporting events has proven to be a smart strategy. To this point, you might recall a report from earlier this summer claiming that Apple is also interested in acquiring Formula 1 streaming rights for somewhere in the range of $120 million. It's certainly a chunk of change, but pales in comparison to the billions ESPN pays for NFL streaming rights and the $150 million Netflix paid the NFL for just two NFL games last year.
