A huge (and free!) Japanese convention is taking over Sunset Park this weekend

Time Out18-07-2025
Exciting news, anime fans: AniTOMO Convention, a free and all-day celebration of Japanese pop culture, is back in Brooklyn tomorrow. This is the third edition of the festival, which is organized by AniTOMO, a New York-based nonprofit honoring the cross-cultural exchange between Brooklyn and Japan. The free, one-day-only event will take place at Japan Village in Sunset Park on Saturday, July 19, from 11am to 10 pm.
The convention will feature over 100 artists and anime screenings, cosplay fashion shows, game panels, workshops, prizes and other celebrations of Japanese culture. Previous editions have brought in over 7,000 enthusiasts. There will also be free giveaways on the hour, every hour.
Think you're the sagest fan? AniTOMO and the American Debate League are once again presenting their renowned Great Anime Debate to engage the highest-level attendees in trivia and debate.
Japan Village is offering attendees a five-percent discount across its delectable food stalls. As a year-round 'Japanese vacation without leaving Brooklyn,' the Industry City space is the perfect venue for AniTOMO, with dozens of vendors offering authentic and modern takes on beloved food, beverages, books, fashions and more.
This year's partners, responsible for keeping the festival absolutely free, include the Museum of Moving Image, GKids, Sephora, Anime NYC and the Brooklyn Public Library.
AniTOMO was founded in 2022 by Eileen Level, a film professional and educator who wanted to showcase the ideas of BIPOC trailblazers through creative and fun programming. The convention launched in 2023 as a way to make a love of Japanese art accessible to those who might not be able to afford traditional conventions.
Given Level's background in cinema, a key tenet of AniTOMO is its dedication to screening at least one film or episode, to ensure audiences can collectively experience the magic of the Japanese moving image without any barriers.
Other AniTOMO events include the AniTOMO Plus Ultra Tour, an invitational program for BIPOC Brooklyn high schoolers voices to co-design the annual convention; and AniTOMO Pop Ups, a series of holiday-themed events in partnership with cultural institutions.

Fans go wild over Julie Goodwin's new fashion look after her extreme weight loss

has wowed fans with a very eye-catching new look. The MasterChef star, 54, took to Instagram on Thursday to tease an upcoming appearance on Sunrise. The celebrity gourmand was on the Channel Seven morning show to concoct a sweet curried lamb chop casserole. However, fans seemed just as enamoured with Julie's eye for fashion as her culinary skills. Julie shared a pre-show photo that showed her preparing for her on-camera moment. Looking very svelte in a chic zebra-print blouse that she wore under an Australian Women's Weekly apron, Julie was also sporting a pair of unique glasses. Julie's eyewear, from Central Coast-based optical fashion label The Elusive Miss Lou, featured a subtle tortoiseshell at the top of the frame. This was coupled with dramatic black and white fabric stripes at the bottom of the frame – a pattern that matched her animal-print blouse perfectly. Fans were quick to gush over Julie's $369 eyewear, with many demanding to know where she picked up the glasses. 'Julie, that looks so delicious. You look amazing! And, I absolutely love your glasses. Where did you buy them from?' one fan asked, with Julie giving up the label in her reply. 'Love the look! Glasses are great! Your smile says it all,' another offered. Summing up the sentiment of many, a third chimed in with: 'Now those glasses are beautiful… so flattering.' It comes after Julie recently issued a statement defending her weight loss after fans raised concerns about her health. She shared an update on Instagram after a new photo, in which she looked very slim, was posted to her account. Her dramatic transformation led to comments from worried followers. 'Thanks to all who have expressed concern about my health. I am well, and I am within the healthy weight range. My doctor concurs,' she wrote. 'For those who have asked me for advice or tips, I am not qualified to provide this. It's advice that should be sought from your trusted health professionals, not from me. I'm a TV cook,' Julie continued. 'For those who want to comment on the shape and condition of my body, please do it on your own page because I'm tired of reading it. For that reason, I'll be turning off comments on this post. 'For all of us, can we please find something more interesting to talk about? Can we please model kindness to our kids and grandkids, and can we please leave this obsession with people's looks back in the 1980s? Peace and love.' Julie was prompted to speak out after a recent selfie led to comments asking whether she was 'sick'. 'I'm actually concerned... to be honest, but if you are healthy and well, there is nothing to worry about,' one fan commented. 'Oh Julie… too much weight loss,' another chimed in, while one more said, 'She is sick. She looks shocking.' 'Julie, you are awesome, but are you okay?' someone else asked, with one more posting, 'Are you okay, Julie? You don't look okay. Hope there's nothing wrong.' 'She looks like a skeleton,' one more person wrote, with yet another saying, 'OMG you look so ill.' Others defended Julie, with one person writing, 'Love how people speculate she is on the jabs. My bet is she is looking after herself and eating the right foods.' 'OMG Julie, you look amazing! You have a beautiful smile. Keep shining!' another said. One more chimed in: 'Can everyone stop commenting on Julie's weight and telling her she's too thin? All you're doing is projecting on her what YOU think she should look like. If she had always looked like this, no-one would say anything. 'Just be happy for her that she's happy, her doctor's happy, and she's healthy!' Julie recently revealed she had lost more weight following her dramatic 'accidental' transformation, which saw her drop a whopping 20kg almost a decade ago.

Scran season 9: A Foodie's Day at the Edinburgh Festivals 2025

It's that time of year again when we head to the world-famous Edinburgh festivals to sample some of what's available for locals and visitors alike. The festivals are back with a bang this year - Edinburgh is absolutely jam-packed with people and performers. Producer Kelly and I brave the busy streets - starting the day with an Eating Edinburgh: Fringe Festival Food Tour. Luana Scott-Moncreif, their tour guide, brings them to different restaurants and shops in the city, learning more about the fringe and catching some street performances on the way as they eat their way around Edinburgh. Picture: Cory Cavin as chef Wayne Swingle Our next stop was the Edinburgh Gin Distillery for Ready, Steady, Cocktail - yes, it is exactly what it sounds like - that famous show, reincarnated but with Edinburgh Gin-based cocktails. You'll hear Gordon Dundas who hosts the show and I also spoke to Sarah Prior, Brand Homes Head of Sales and Marketing for Edinburgh Gin Distillery who tells her all about the show and the new distillery. Finally the team went along to see Emmy award-nominated Cory Cavin's 'Enjoy your meal' - a one man show which portrays a somewhat fraught evening in the life of chef Wayne Swingle. You'll hear some of the show as well as a chat I had with him online the next morning. If you do get to go to enjoy the festivals we hope you have a great time and enjoy some quality scran! These Trousers Make Every Outfit Look Elegant – They're Still In Stock (For Now)

When you think of Reformation, chances are you're thinking of a swishy summer dress; and while the celeb-loved brand does indeed make an excellent frock, it's also been refining its timeless basics offering lately. Case in point, the Cynthia straight-leg jeans that were pretty much inescapable on and off social media earlier this year. Now, as we're facing the UK's predictably unreliable summer, the LA-based brand has delivered a pair of trousers so superlative, it's convinced us to abandon our sundresses early. The trousers in question are the Vida Pants, a pair you might have already spotted on your evening Instagram scroll or perhaps on an impossibly well-dressed woman in one of London's trendier neighbourhoods. Designed to sit snugly on the hips, the trousers are cut for a relaxed fit that lightly flares out at the ankles. It's simple enough, really, they're classic, timeless and versatile. Vida Low Rise Trousers You really can't go wrong with a pair of classic black trousers, especially this low-rise pair that'll elevate every single outfit. So what exactly makes them feel so current? Well, to start with, they're crafted from a heavyweight crepe fabric that fluidly drapes across the body and is largely wrinkle-resistant for a polished fit. It's also warmer than cotton to keep you cosy through winter. Then there's the low-rise waist that sits just below the belly button for a relaxed yet elegant fit. Of course, if you're still swearing off low-waisted bottoms, Reformation also offers the sleek trousers with a high waist. Reformation sells the Vida trousers in a crayon box's worth of shades, from muted neutrals and pastels to striped and animal print variations. Naturally, the black trousers have proven most popular with the fashion set this season, who've already styled theirs with everything from satin tops to vests and jackets. Incredibly versatile and evidently seasonless, the trousers are available in sizes ranging from 4 to 16, with special petite and plus-sized iterations also on offer. Meaning no matter your body type, there's a pair to fit you well. Whether you wear yours with a tank top and a silk scarf tied around your waist, as we enjoy the last few weeks of summer, style it with a smart striped shirt and loafers to the office or offset the sleek silhouette with chunky knitwear come autumn, trust me when I say, the Vida trousers will be the hardest working piece in your wardrobe. Unfortunately, its popularity also means it's selling fast, so we suggest shopping for a pair (or two) now. Vida Low Rise Trousers in Cream For a dressier warm-weather option, wear these cream trousers with a tailored waistcoat and heeled flip flops. Vida High Rise Trousers Not completely convinced about the return of low-rise trousers? Add this elegant high-rise pair to your rotation instead. Vida Low Rise Trousers in Brown Chocolate brown is always a winning shade for fall, whether you style your trousers with a matching blazer or a chunky cream jumper. Vida Low Rise Trousers in Rose You don't need to wear this pretty pink pair with a lightweight floral jumper and dainty ballet flats, but we'd highly recommend it. Vida Low Rise Trousers in Zebra ICYMI, zebra print is big with the fashion crowd, and these maximalist trousers are more versatile than you might imagine. Wear them with sleek white T-shirts and cashmere jumpers alike. Veda Vida Low Rise Leather Trousers For a more supermodel off-duty energy, consider this leather-swathed iteration styled with a tank top and streamlined suede trainers. The burgundy shade is just as chic, but selling fast. Main image credits: ©Instagram/@beccawise_ @lostnwonderr Hitanshi Kamdar is a senior commerce writer for Grazia.
