Vaishnavi Hagawane dowry death case: Pune police detain man accused of cruelty to her son from Nepal border
The Pimpri Chinchwad police said Friday they have nabbed Nilesh Ramchandra Chavan in connection with the Vaishnavi Hagawane dowry death case on charges of allegedly causing harm to her 10-month-old son.
After a rigorous search operation, a police team held Chavan at a location on the India-Nepal border. A senior police officer confirmed that Chavan has been detained, and will be brought to Pune for further investigation. The police said Chavan will be placed under arrest, and produced before a court in Pune on Saturday.
According to the police, Vaishnavi allegedly died by suicide at her in-laws' house in Bhukum in the Mulshi taluka of the Pune district on May 16. Her father, Anil Sahebrao Kaspate, 51, a resident of Wakad, lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against her husband and in-laws at the Bavdhan Police Station of Pimpri Chinchwad police the next day.
The police arrested Vaishnavi's husband, Shashank Hagawane, 27, father-in-law and expelled Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Rajendra Hagawane, 57, mother-in-law Lata, 54, sister-in-law Karishma, 31, and brother-in-law Sushil, 27, all residents of Bhukum in Mulshi, in this case.
On May 22, an FIR was lodged against Chavan at the Warje Police Station in Pune city for allegedly threatening Vaishnavi's father and family members when they went to their residence to take custody of her son on May 20.
The police said that Vaishnavi's 10-month-old son was with Chavan. The Kaspate family had alleged that when they went to take the baby from his house in Karve Nagar, he allegedly threatened them at gunpoint. He was booked in this case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Indian Arms Act.
On May 24, the police booked Nilesh Chavan of Karve Nagarin for allegedly subjecting Vaishnavi's son to cruelty under sections 75 (cruelty to children), and 87 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015. The police said Chavan is known to be a friend of the Hagawane family.
Meanwhile, the baby was handed over to the Kaspate family on May 22. But Chavan escaped from Pune. While he was on the run, the police conducted a search at his house, and seized his laptop and other items for investigation.
The police then launched a massive search operation, and he was finally traced on the Nepal border.
The police have also started the procedure for cancelling gun licences of Nilesh Chavan, Vaishnavi's husband, Shashank Hagawane, and brother-in-law Sushil.
On Thursday, another offence was lodged against Shashank and Lata Hagawane at the Mhalunge MIDC Police Station in Pimpri Chinchwad for allegedly cheating a farmer, and threatening him at gunpoint in 2022. Two separate FIRs were also lodged Thursday against Shashank and Sushil Hagawane at the Warje and Kothrud police stations in Pune city for 'fraudulent representation' of their address by 'deceptive means' for taking gun licences.
The police said an FIR was also lodged against Nilesh Chavan in 2022 following a complaint filed by his wife.

Seven NCP MLAs join NDPP in Nagaland: Ajit Pawar cites ‘discontent', rules out Anti-Defection Law
In a major political setback for Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), all the seven NCP MLAs in Nagaland have defected to the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) of Nagaland. Joining of the NCP MLAs have increased the strength of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio's party in the state assembly, giving the NDPP a clear majority on its own. Speaking to the media on Sunday, Ajit Pawar confirmed the development and acknowledged that the seven MLAs had been expressing discontent over the lack of development work and political traction in the state. 'About two to three months ago, the seven MLAs from our Nagaland unit had come to meet me. They told me that they are facing issues there. no work was being done for them on the ground,' Pawar said. 'I even spoke to the Chief Minister there regarding their concerns. Yes, there was discontent among them, that much is true,' he said further adding that he will take more information on it. 'Over the past two days, I was unwell, so don't have much information about it. but now I have begun gathering more detailed information about the developments in Nagaland,' he said. Pawar also clarified that the anti-defection law would not apply in this case, as all seven legislators have defected collectively, thus fulfilling the legal condition for exemption under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution. 'Since all seven MLAs have joined the ruling party together, the anti-defection law does not come into effect,' he noted. With the defection of all the seven MLAs Ajit Pawar-led NCP will have no representation in the Nagaland Assembly.

AC was switched on, says kin of mechanic who died in blast in Ghaziabad
Ghaziabad: The family of a 35-year-old technician who died when the compressor of an AC exploded on the roof of a restaurant on Saturday has alleged that someone had switched on the machine while he was at work, causing the explosion. Following a complaint by the family, an FIR has been registered against unknown persons under Section 106 of BNS for causing death by negligence. Pintu Kumar died at the spot while his colleague Puran was critically injured when the AC compressor burst during a gas refill operation at Walk in the Woods restaurant in Vaishali's Sector 4 on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred around 2.10pm. "My brother had been repairing ACs and electrical items for five years. We had begged him to quit after seeing news reports of AC explosions last year, but he assured us nothing would happen to him as he was skilled at his job," said Atish Kumar, Pintu's brother. Kumar, who leaves behind a wife and two children, had received a call from restaurant owner Ved Bansal around noon on Saturday for the repair work. DCP (trans-Hindon) Nimish Patil said a special team had been formed to investigate the cause of death. The region has seen a number of AC-related accidents in the region. Between April 1 and June 5 this year, Noida and Ghaziabad recorded 117 fire incidents due to AC explosions — 85 in Noida and 32 in Ghaziabad. Ankush Kumar, another AC mechanic, said nitrogen left in the system could pose a significant explosion risk. "The severity depends on the quantity of nitrogen present. While we use nitrogen to detect leaks, its complete removal is crucial before refill operation," he added. He said other factors like electrical faults, refrigerant issues, excessive heat build-up, and poor maintenance could cause sudden discharge of pressurised refrigerant and oil, potentially leading to explosions or fires.
