Expert picks & predictions for tonight's game between the Tigers and the Pirates
'Entering the All-Star break, Skenes had a 1.19 ERA in career wins compared to a 2.39 ERA in losses or non-decisions, so either way, he hasn't been the Buccos' problem since he arrived. This year alone, Skenes has allowed 27 runs over 20 starts and the Pirates have lost 11 of those 20 games!
Pittsburgh's offense has scored the fewest runs in not just the NL, but all of baseball — even the Rockies and White Sox. For more context, the Phillies have scored 112 more runs than the Pirates in one less game.
Both Skenes and Wheeler will be dominant in the second-half, I have no doubts, but Skenes could post a sub 2.00 ERA this season (was doing so through 19 starts), sub .200 OBA, and still have a losing record, which on surface level makes no sense.
Despite how it looks or sounds, I think what Skenes is doing weighs more impressive, challenging, and deserving than what Wheeler is doing.'

Shields retains undisputed title in dominant win

Claressa Shields retained her undisputed heavyweight title with a unanimous decision win over Lani Daniels in Detroit, Michigan. The American, 30, was levels above New Zealander Daniels in a largely one-sided contest, held in front of a reported 15,000 fans at the Little Caesars Arena. Daniels offered little attacking intent early on, staying on the back foot and largely evading Shields. As the fight progressed, Shields asserted her dominance, landing cleanly in the middle rounds - particularly with body shots - snapping the 37-year-old's head back in the seventh as her movement began to fade. Daniels improved slightly in the later stages, with the pair trading punches in the eighth, but Shields, who refers to herself as the 'Greatest Woman of All Time', was a clear and deserved winner. She improved her professional record to 17-0 with scores of 100-90, 99-91, and 99-91. "I thought she wanted to fight, but she didn't really engage until the last three rounds," Shields told broadcaster DAZN. "She was very tough and tricky toward the end, but I know I won every round." Could shock bout with Laila Ali be next? A two-time Olympic gold medallist, Shields became a five-weight world champion earlier this year when she moved up to heavyweight and unified the division by defeating Danielle Perkins. She is a three-weight undisputed champion, having previously held all four belts at middleweight and light-middleweight. Her only career loss came as an amateur to Savannah Marshall, a defeat she avenged in 2022. With limited competition at heavyweight, Shields is expected to move back down in weight in search of more competitive or high-profile fights. "Anybody can get it," she added. "I want to make the biggest fights and the best fights." She has been linked to an unlikely bout with Laila Ali, daughter of boxing legend Muhammad Ali. Promoter Dmitry Salita says an offer is on the table, though Ali, 47, has not fought professionally since 2007. The former WBC super-middleweight champion retired unbeaten with a record of 24-0, including 21 knockouts. WBA and WBC super-middleweight champion Franchon Crews-Dezurn - who Shields defeated in 2016 – was also mentioned as a more likely next opponent. Claressa Shields eases past Lani Daniels to defend undisputed heavyweight title

Claressa Shields retained her undisputed women's heavyweight championship with a commanding unanimous decision over Lani Daniels on Saturday night at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. The judges scored the bout 100-90, 99-91 and 99-91 in favor of Shields, who improved to 17-0 (3 KOs). It marked the third straight main event appearance in Detroit for the 30-year-old Flint native and two-time Olympic gold medalist, who remains the only boxer in the four-belt era to become an undisputed champion in three different weight classes. Related: Xander Zayas outboxes Jorge Garcia to become boxing's youngest active world champion Daniels (11-3-2, 1 KO), a 37-year-old former IBF light heavyweight titleholder from New Zealand, offered little early offense and spent the opening rounds circling the ring. Shields was forced to press the action and gradually took control with superior timing, footwork and punch variety. By the middle rounds, Shields had closed the distance and was landing consistent body shots and combinations to the head. Daniels began to stand her ground in the sixth and seventh rounds but struggled to match Shields' output or accuracy. The final rounds featured more two-way action, but Shields remained in control through cleaner shot selection and sharper counters. She outlanded Daniels in every round and neutralized her opponent's late pressure with disciplined defense and calculated exchanges. The fight capped an 11-bout card broadcast on Dazn and drew an announced crowd of 15,366. Shields' previous two appearances at Little Caesars Arena also headlined boxing's return to a venue that hadn't hosted a major card until her 2023 win over Maricela Cornejo. In the co-main event, Detroit's Tony Harrison (30-4-1, 21 KOs) returned after a 28-month layoff and scored a unanimous-decision win over Edward Diaz (15-7, 12 KOs) despite being dropped in the ninth round. Harrison, a former super-welterweight champion, was fighting for the first time since losing to Tim Tszyu in 2023.

Guerrero hits 2 doubles and scores twice as the AL-best Blue Jays beat the slumping Tigers 6-2

DETROIT (AP) — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. doubled twice and scored a pair of runs as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the slumping Detroit Tigers 6-2 Friday night. The American League-leading Blue Jays are 7-1 since the All-Star break, while the Tigers have lost five straight and 11 of 12. José Berríos (7-4) picked up the win, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks in six innings. Keider Montero (4-3) took the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits in four-plus innings. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the second when Wenceel Pérez singled, stole second and scored on Dillon Dingler's double. Addison Barger's RBI double made it 1-1 in the fourth and he scored with two outs on a throwing error by Javier Báez. The Blue Jays then took control with a four-run fifth. Nathan Lukes and George Springer started the inning with singles, and Guerrero hit an RBI double. Bo Bichette's two-run double made it 5-1 and Alejandro Kirk's single off reliever Tyler Holton gave Toronto a five-run lead. Spencer Torkelson's 23rd homer of the season pulled the Tigers within 6-2 in the sixth. Key moment The Tigers didn't get another baserunner after Torkelson's sixth-inning homer. Key stat The Tigers have been outscored 83-32 in their 12-game skid, an average of 4.25 runs per game. They had a plus-112 run differential through 93 games, but have given back almost half of it in a dozen contests. Up next The teams play the third game of their four-game series on Saturday with Tigers ace LHP Tarik Skubal (10-3, 2.19 ERA) facing RHP Kevin Gausman (7-7, 4.01). ___ AP MLB: Dave Hogg, The Associated Press
