PETALING JAYA : PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang will be undergoing a medical procedure tomorrow, according to his son Khalil.
'On behalf of our family, I humbly request that everyone pray for the health and recovery of my father,' Khalil said in a brief statement today.
Hadi's health has declined over the past few years, with the seven-term Marang MP undergoing dialysis and being admitted to hospital several times.
Earlier this month, Sinar Harian reported that he had hinted at stepping down as PAS president due to health reasons.
It is understood that Hadi expressed this intention to senior party leaders at a recent retreat in Terengganu.
This fuelled speculation on the positions of the PAS president and deputy president ahead of the party's internal elections, expected in September.
PAS Dewan Ulama committee member Mokhtar Senik claimed there were calls for Hadi to relinquish the top post, although this was denied by several state-level leaders.

New RM380m hospital in Pasir Gudang to open in July, specialist clinics coming later
JOHOR BARU, June 16 — Hospital Pasir Gudang (HPG) will open to the public in phases starting next month, said Johor Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon. He said the emergency and trauma department, along with the public health and general surgery departments, would begin operations next month. He said HPG would also have 14 specialist clinics, although the launch of some services would be delayed initially as they required specialist doctors or a complete medical team to be in place. 'At present, the Public Works Department (JKR) has also handed over the project to the Health Ministry who are making final preparations for the initial operations at HPG in July,' he told reporters after the Sultanah Fatimah Foundation 2025 cheque handover ceremony at Southern University College here today. Present at the event was Southern University College chairman Datuk Vincent Tan Meng Seng and Sultanah Fatimah Foundation chairman Mejar Cina Datuk David Wong Khong Soon. Ling said the government has also appointed several key positions for HPG, including the hospital's director, deputy director, and other management staff. He explained that there are more than 1,800 positions for all departments available to ensure the new 304-bed capacity hospital can operate at an optimal level. 'There are currently certain constraints, therefore we are making plans to request the Health Ministry to send nurses and doctors to serve at HPG or to transfer some of them from existing facilities,' he said. Ling said HPG would need about a year to fill the required positions before it can operate at full capacity. 'We expect HPG to be fully operational by next year,' he said, adding that it would take time to fill all the necessary roles and complete the team of specialist personnel. HPG was built at a cost of more than RM380 million, with construction starting in 2020. Prior to that, the hospital's development faced delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the Movement Control Order (MCO). On a related matter, Ling said the Health Ministry would forward the working paper for Hospital Sultanah Aminah 2 (HSA 2) to the public-private partnership unit (UKAS) before submitting it to the Cabinet. He said this step was necessary for the Federal government to proceed with the construction of HSA 2 in Kempas. 'Previously, the land issue, site identification, and preliminary works for HSA 2 have been completed. 'Several technical workshops and discussions on the hospital's requirements have also been conducted to avoid any overlap,' he said. Ling has stated that the construction of HSA 2 is expected to help ease congestion at Johor Baru's two existing hospitals — Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA) and Hospital Sultan Ismail (HSI). The Johor government has designated HSA 2 as a state priority project.

Govt now shifting fertility drive's focus to men, says minister
Women, family and community development minister Nancy Shukri said the government is offering in vitro fertilisation and fertility services for both men and women. GEORGE TOWN : The government's new drive to increase fertility rates is now focussed on men, says women, family and community development minister Nancy Shukri. Speaking after her ministry's event in Seberang Jaya today, she said the government has begun running roadshows focussed on male fertility, starting in Sabah. 'We need men to realise it is not because of women alone that the fertility rate is low,' she said, adding the government would bring in a 'celebrity' doctor to help in its efforts to raise awareness. Nancy said the government, through the National Population and Family Development Board, was also offering in vitro fertilisation and fertility services to both men and women. She said an ageing population by 2030 was a real concern and urged both genders to reflect on their roles in raising the birth rate. According to the 2024 ESCAP Population Data Insights, the country's total fertility rate (TFR) rose slightly from 1.6 to 1.7 last year but remains below the replacement level of 2.1. A TFR of 1.7 means that, on average, each woman is having fewer than two children. For a population to replace itself without relying on immigration, the TFR needs to be 2.1. According to the statistics department's latest numbers, Sabah's birth rate is the lowest in the country, dropping from 5.5 children per woman in 1980 to just 1.4 in 2022, well below the replacement level of 2.1. While Terengganu registered the highest TFR at 2.9, Penang and Kuala Lumpur recorded the lowest at 1.2. Meanwhile, Nancy said caregiving was another key factor in deciding whether a couple would want to have a baby. She said the government was now trying to develop a recognised professional caregiving industry and urged the public to treat carers as professionals, not servants. She said better pay and training could encourage more youths to join the field. 'I personally experienced it with my mother. It is very difficult to get people to be caregivers,' she said.
