Regional music stars shine in 2025
Gaana's Mid-Year Magicians report shows that regional stars have stolen the spotlight in the first half of 2025. Almost 63% of music subscribers are now coming from Tier 2 and 3 cities.
The report points out that while Bollywood is evergreen, the most-streamed artistes so far this year are no longer limited to the film music industry, but are emerging from every corner of the country, bringing distinctly local sounds into the national spotlight.
Voices from Maharashtra, Haryana, Tamil Nadu and Bihar are topping the charts, reflecting a notable shift in listening habits in both metros and Tier 2 cities.
The report reflects not only a playlist change, but a cultural evolution, with listeners tuning in to sounds that reflect diverse linguistic and musical traditions with a growing appetite for regional languages, cross-genre experiments and emotionally resonant compositions.
One of the most remarkable success stories comes from Marathi artiste Sanju Rathod, whose tracks Shaky and Gulabi Sadi emerged as breakout hits, dominating streaming numbers across states.

Bhojpuri artist Shilpi Raj continued her upward trajectory in 2025 with Bandookk proving irresistible to listeners who gravitate towards raw, unapologetic energy. Sai Abhyyankar from the Tamil music circuit added depth to the mix, with his melodically layered releases like Sithira Puthiri , Aasa Kooda and Vizhi Veekura, each finding dedicated fanbases.
Among Hindi music artistes, Arijit Singh reaffirmed his emotional pull with Zamaana Lage and the Bengali track Tomake Chai Bolechhilem . Shreya Ghoshal demonstrated her linguistic range with a presence across Hindi, Telugu and Tamil songs.

Ravichander kept his high-energy momentum going with Sawadeeka , Hridayam Lopala and Dheema , proving his growing pan-India appeal. Composer Pritam Chakraborty further cemented his relevance with his work in Metro…In Dino , which has been widely loved.
Meanwhile, the nostalgic return of SP Balasubrahmanyam's classics on the platform reflected a continued emotional connection with golden-era melodies. Internationally, Ed Sheeran's collaboration with Arijit Singh on Sapphire added a global sheen to the Indian playlist scene.
Gaana's mid-year roundup offers a window into how identity, emotion and expression are increasingly being shaped through language and sound. As the year progresses, these trends are likely to deepen, with more local voices stepping into the spotlight.

Coolie Hindi Advance Booking Report: Rajinikanth starrer gains momentum; Sells STRONG 13,500 tickets in top chains for day 1, two days out
Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, and starring Rajinikanth, with a bunch of other big Indian film actors like Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Aamir Khan, Upendra, Shruti Haasan and others, was already showing excellent pre-release booking trends on day 1 in southern India. Now, the hype of the movie has transcended in the north. Coolie Sells 13,500 Tickets In Top Chains For Day 1, Two Days Out Coolie has sold 13,500 tickets in top chains for the opening day in Hindi, as at 11:30pm on August 11th and the momentum is increasing. Final ticket sales can end up near 50,000, setting it up for an opening to the north of Rs 6 crore in Hindi, against a formidable rival like War 2. Coolie Targets To Emerge Biggest Global Kollywood Opener Coolie is a dormant volcano that will be active from the 14th of August. Presales are exceptional and a global opening day of around Rs 140 crore can't be discounted. The walkins on the release day will determine weather Kollywood records will fall or not. The current record holder is Leo and it is going to be a very close and controversial battle if things get too close. Rajinikanth Eyes A Solid Comeback With Coolie; Lokesh Kanagaraj Aims To Breach New Heights Rajinikanth is set to make a solid comeback after Vettaiyan while Lokesh will look to take his peak a notch higher. Every film of his is bigger than the last one and one would hope that this tradition keeps going on for the director. He is among the only directors who can guarantee a film within two years. Leo released in October 2023 and Coolie is out in just two days from now. The global extended weekend projections of Coolie are pegged at Rs 400 crore and if the reception of the movie is solid, we can expect Coolie to cross 2.0 to become the highest grossing Kollywood movie of all time. Coolie In Theatres From August 14th Coolie's tickets can be booked from the box office or from online ticketing applications. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates.

War 2 Hindi Advance Booking Report: Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR film sells GOOD 50,000 tickets in top chains for Thursday, with 2 days to go
.War 2, directed by Ayan Mukerji, and starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR and Kiara Advani among others, continued its good pace in advance bookings for the Hindi version. The total tickets sold in top national chains like PVRInox and Cinepolis for the opening day, as at 11:30pm on 11th August, 2025, stand at 50,000. A final PIC ticket count of 1,50,000 plus can be expected, making it very eligible for a Rs 30 crore plus net Hindi opening. War 2 (Hindi) Sells 50,000 Tickets In Top Chains For Day 1, Two Days Out War 2's Telugu version bookings should start tomorrow, and the bookings are expected to be heartening. However, considering the fact that it is, at the end of the day, a Bollywood movie and not a conventional Tollywood biggie which gets support from the local diaspora audience without much effort, the bookings are not expected to be bumper. The all India day 1 expectations are pinned at Rs 55 crore net, with day 2 numbers expected to be over Rs 60 crore net. War 2's Bookings Are Good, Though Not Exceptional While the bookings of War 2 can be classified as good, given everything, what was really expected was excellent or bumper. The initial euphoria seen in some of the 2023 Bollywood biggies is not visible here. The masses are not totally on board and it will take some really strong word of mouth to get that section of audience to watch it. Fighter trended well but suffered immensely because of not getting the desired support from the masses. Whether War 2 changes that for Hrithik Roshan is still to be seen. War 2 Targets A Rs 100 Crore Gross Worldwide Start The bookings of War 2 internationally are reasonable. A Rs 100 crore global opening day will be a touch and go for the Hrithik-Jr NTR actioner. Its release rival Coolie is cruising towards a number of around Rs 140 crore on the other hand. Since Hindi films are known to trend better than Tamil films due to less exhaustion of audiences on the opening day, it is expected that War 2 will eventually take the lead provided it lives up to its hype. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates. ALSO READ: Jr NTR's speech for Hrithik Roshan at War 2 event: 'South Indian actors have a doubt kaise accept karenge ye log but...'

Ibrahim Ali Khan's 'Sarzameen' co-star gets brutally honest about his acting: 'He needs to have some...'
Actor Piloo Vidyarthi has shared her disappointment after learning that a large portion of her role in 'Sarzameen', directed by Kayoze Irani, was removed from the final cut of the film. Speaking to News18, Piloo reflected on the performance of rookie actor Ibrahim Ali Khan, son of actors Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh. While she praised his kind nature, she noted that he still has a long way to go in terms of acting depth. 'Acting depends on your life experiences—how you have lived your life," she reflected. 'He was very nice to me, clicked photos. But I think he needs to have some depth. Star kids are also under a lot of pressure to live up to their parents. And Ibrahim comes from a family of big achievers. They have seen attention since forever. No one is bad," she said. In the same interview, Piloo revealed that nearly 80% of her scenes were left out. 'They didn't retain even 20% of what was shot,' she said. 'I was disappointed, so I'm not promoting the film. Yes, we can talk about it since it has released, but I wasn't used at all.' She also commented on the film's structure and direction. 'The makers have gone wrong somewhere because the director struggled to piece together the narrative,' she said. 'Beech mein main phas gayi hoon, na sar hai na zameen hai,' she added, using a Hindi phrase that means she felt stuck and confused by the end result. Piloo, who had prepared seriously for her part, added that it was upsetting to see her efforts reduced to almost nothing. 'These things happen in our journey, so that's okay. But yes, it's disappointing when you prepare for a role, and it's reduced to nothing.' Sarzameen has faced criticism since its release, and Piloo's comments have now added to the conversation around the film's production choices and performances.
