Party Like It's 2009: The Playlist

I spent the weekend reviewing Lady Gaga's 'Mayhem' and thinking a lot about 2009, a recent moment the album explicitly references. When I was trying to put my finger on exactly what 2009 sounded like, there was only one thing to do: make a playlist.
I graduated from college in the fabled year of 'Bad Romance' and 'Paparazzi' — and of the Black Eyed Peas' 'I Got a Feeling' and Taylor Swift's 'You Belong With Me' — so I attach a lot of emotions and memories to that musical moment. My favorite 2009 albums at the time were a trifecta of stellar and ambitious indie releases that would come to define their era, too: Animal Collective's 'Merriweather Post Pavilion,' Grizzly Bear's 'Veckatimest' and Dirty Projectors' 'Bitte Orca.' The line between underground and mainstream music was becoming provocatively blurred, in a way that seems a little quaint today. The writer Andrew Unterberger recently devoted an entire episode of his Billboard podcast to an event that somehow made headlines in 2009: Beyoncé and Jay-Z attending a Grizzly Bear concert in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. (Naturally, her cool younger sister, Solange, took them.)
You'll hear Grizzly Bear on this brief tour through 2009, along with higher-profile artists like Miley Cyrus, Jason Derulo and Mariah Carey. This is hardly meant to be a definitive look at the year's releases, but a quick refresher on what it sounded like to, as I put it in my 'Mayhem' review, party like it's 2009.

The actor met the veteran of MTV's 'The Real World: New Orleans' through mutual friends in 2002 on a blind date that almost didn't happen. 'We were meeting at a restaurant and she wound up turning up almost a full hour late,' the actor said in 2021 on 'Access Hollywood.' 'I was asking other people at the bar. I was like, 'How long do you wait for a blind date?' And they were like, 'Kind of an hour tops.' So she made it under the wire.' Turns out she was stuck in 'horrible' New York traffic, he said. They married in 2004 in her hometown of Fayetteville, Ark., and honeymooned in Africa.

Brooke Shields' Podcast on Meghan Markle Was Deleted by King Charles' Goddaughter
Today in awkward news, Brooke Shields' recent podcast episode—where she had a lot to say about Meghan Markle—was surreptitiously deleted from the internet. And please be advised that this wasn't just any podcast. It was hosted by India Hicks, who happens to be the goddaughter of King Charles. I'll give you a moment. Per People, Brooke reflected on a SXSW panel she and Meghan did together back in March 2024, which was called "Breaking Barriers, Shaping Narratives: How Women Lead On and Off the Screen." Apparently, Meghan spoke about writing to Procter & Gamble at age 11 about gender equality—which Brooke found "serious" and "precious." "Katie asks the first question to Meghan and she talks about how at a young age, she was already advocating for women," Brooke said on the podcast. "She starts telling a story about how when she was 11–and she keeps saying, 'Well, when I was 11, I saw this commercial and they were talking about how washing dishes was for women. And she said, 'I didn't think only women wash dishes. It wasn't fair. So I wrote to the company.' She kept saying she was 11! She wrote to the company, they changed the text, they changed the commercial. It was just too precious, and I was like, they're not going to want to sit here for 45 minutes and listen to anybody be precious or serious." I like a totally normal and on-topic story for the event. But Brooke then recalled interrupting Meghan: "I go, 'Excuse me, I'm so sorry, I've got to interrupt you there for one minute.' I was trying not to be rude, but I wanted to be funny because it was so serious. I just want to give everybody here a context as to how we're different. When I was 11, I was playing a prostitute.'" She then claimed their talk became "more relaxed" as a result of the joke. Meanwhile, India doesn't appear to have explained why Brooke's episode was deleted, but People notes that a link to it leads to a "page not found" message. TikTok's biggest star was detained by ICE, with help from another influencer
Khaby Lame, one of the world's top TikTok creators, was recently detained by U.S. immigration officials in Las Vegas and has since left the country, The New York Times reports. According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Lame, an Italian-Senegalese influencer known for his silent, deadpan reactions to viral clips, overstayed the terms of his visa after arriving in April. He was reportedly granted voluntary departure and is now abroad. The situation grabbed headlines after a teenage influencer, Bo Loudon, boasted on X that he flagged Lame's immigration status to authorities. Loudon, who often posts political content, said he reached out to contacts to report it. Lame, 25, has built a massive global following — and a string of lucrative brand deals — after he reportedly lost his job during the pandemic. In addition to partnering with big names like Hugo Boss, he has also appeared — very briefly — in a Hollywood movie, and starred in a three-part travel series about his time in the U.S. He hasn't publicly addressed the incident as of this writing.
