Nagarjuna Sagar reaches full reservoir level in July after 18 years

The biggest dam-reservoir in the two Telugu states usually receives inflows from upstream during Aug-Sep. This is the first time in the last 18 years for the dam to touch its FRL in July, prompting authorities to release water downstream.
As the management of Nagarjuna Sagar is under
govt, ministers Uttam Kumar Reddy and Adluri Lakshman pressed the button to lift 20 crest gates and release water downstream. About 26 lakh acres both in
and Telangana are cultivated under Nagarjuna Sagar project canals.
About 10 lakh acres in Palnadu and Prakasam districts get water from Nagarjuna Sagar right canal, while three lakh acres in NTR and Krishna districts are supplied water from the project's left canal.
Nagarjuna Sagar project gets inflows only after another major inter-state project, Srisailam, reaches full reservoir level. As flooding days in Krishna basin are becoming shorter, Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar rarely get filled up, affecting crops in several lakh acres in the two Telugu states.
In fact, the water shortage forced AP govt to declare 'crop holidays' for several years under Nagarjuna Sagar canals.
The huge quantum of water being diverted for power generation due to the power struggle between the two states is also one of the reasons behind the drying up of the two dams.
Although Srisailam dam reached FRL almost a fortnight ago, it was only after a second spell of floods in upstream states like Maharashtra and Karnataka that water was released from Srisailam to Nagarjuna Sagar.

"It is a big day for Andhra Pradesh and also for Telangana. We got sufficient water in Sagar reservoir which helped us release water for paddy cultivation in Sagar ayacut," said AP water resources minister Nimmala Ramanaidu.
He said the govt completed the Handri-Neeva canals on war footing to release water to all the canals in Rayalaseema region. The previous YSRCP regime completely neglected the irrigation sector which caused massive damage to the farming sector, he alleged. With the inflows continuing from upstream, including water released from Nagarjuna Sagar, the last project on Krishna basin — KL Rao Sagar (Pulichintala) — is also expected to touch FRL in the next 2-3 days.

Telangana Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy vows to stop Banakacharla Project by AP

Telangana Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy has vowed to resist the Banakacharla project being pursued by the Andhra Pradesh government. He stated that the Central Water Commission (CWC), Godavari River Management Board, and the Polavaram Project Authority have all rejected permits for the project due to objections raised by Telangana. The Centre has halted environmental clearances in response to concerns raised by the state's irrigation department. Reddy made the remarks while participating in a ration card distribution event in Dharmaram, Peddapalli district, alongside Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar, Tummala Nageswara Rao, and Adluri Laxman Kumar. The minister stressed that Telangana had strongly voiced its objections during a recent Chief Ministers' meeting in Delhi. He argued that the project violates the State Bifurcation Act and the 1980 Godavari River Water Distribution Agreements. Reddy also criticised Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders for making irresponsible statements despite these concerns.
