Government may try as much to cover up 'India's biggest scam', the truth is coming out: Congress on Adani issue

The Hindu20-05-2025

The Congress on Tuesday (May 20, 2025) flagged media reports claiming that Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has warned two offshore funds holding Adani Group shares with penalties and said 'the market regulator's actions might appear on the surface to represent progress but the probe has dragged on for over two years with the conglomerate benefitting from the delay'.
There was no immediate reaction from the SEBI or the Adani Group on the claims.
Congress General Secretary in-charge of Communications, Jairam Ramesh, said 'the 'double-engine' Modani saga continues'.
"SEBI has reportedly threatened two Mauritius-based offshore funds controlled by Elara Capital — Elara India Opportunities Fund and Vespera Fund — with penalties and licence cancellations for failing to provide shareholding details," he said on X.

Mr. Ramesh said, 'These funds have been accused of 'stock parking' — being fronts for benami Adani investments in their own companies in violation of SEBI rules'.
"The two funds have reportedly offered to settle the matter without admitting guilt and paying a token fee, which is the course of action most convenient for Modani," the Congress leader said.
'In December 2022, 98.78% of the India Opportunities Fund was invested in three Adani Companies, while in June 2022, 93.9% of Vespera was invested in Adani Enterprises,' he said.
"SEBI's actions might appear on the surface to represent progress, but the fact is that the Supreme Court had required this investigation to be completed in two months, but it has dragged on for more than two years. The only people who have benefited from this delay are Modani," Mr. Ramesh said.
'Try as the government may to cover up 'India's biggest scam', the truth is coming out,' he asserted.
"And if not via India's compromised institutions, they will come out through Foreign Jurisdictions that Modani cannot bribe, bully, or co-opt," Mr. Ramesh said.
The Congress has been persistent in its attack on the government since the Adani Group stocks took a beating on the bourses in the wake of the U.S. — based short-selling firm Hindenburg Research making a litany of allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share-price manipulation, on the conglomerate headed by industrialist Gautam Adani.
The Adani Group has dismissed all the charges made by the Congress and others as lies, saying it complies with all laws and disclosure requirements.

Chirag Hits Back at Rahul: Why didn't Cong raise quota bar in 50 yrs?

Patna: Union minister and LJP(RV) chief, Chirag Paswan, lashed out at leader and asked him who stopped him or his party to raise the 50% quota bar despite the fact that his family had three prime ministers. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking to reporters at the Patna airport, Chirag said instead of making excuses for Congress failure in election, Rahul should do introspection as to why his party has been losing elections in state after state. Addressing the 'Samvidhan Suraksha Sammelan' at Rajgir on Friday, Rahul reiterated his commitment to caste census and removing the 50% cap on reservations. Rahul also attacked the NDA govt and said Bihar has become the crime capital of the country. Chirag was on way to Muzaffarpur to meet the bereaved family of the dalit girl, who was raped and brutally assaulted on May 26 leading to her death at the PMCH. "They ruled the country for over five decades since independence. Whenever elections are round the corner, like there is in Bihar, Rahul raises such issues to hide his party's failure," Chirag said. On Rahul's comment on law & order, the Hajipur MP said though his party is not a part of the govt in the state or its decision-making, he has expressed his concern to CM Nitish Kumar. Taking a dig at the Congress MP, Chirag asked under whose govt the court first said that the CBI was a caged parrot. He further questioned the Congress leader why its govt for 10 years before Narendra Modi became the PM in 2014 never talked about caste census, raising quota bar and special status to Bihar. On Rahul's "surrender" jibe at PM, Chirag said the leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha was indulging in petty politics. "He knows they are going to lose the Bihar assembly elections as well... Till now, they were blaming EVMs. Now they have found a new excuse of rigging the voter list," he said.

BJP, ECI hit back at Rahul Gandhi's ‘match-fixing' allegations in Maharashtra polls

The Election Commission rejected the charges, calling them absurd and an attempt to malign the institution. EC sources told the media that no Congress candidates or their authorised agents had raised any credible complaints about irregular voting during scrutiny before returning officers and election observers. They said that the voter lists in Maharashtra, like elsewhere in India, are prepared according to the Representation of the People Act, 1950 and the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960. The BJP also hit back strongly, accusing Gandhi of undermining democratic institutions and eroding public trust in elections. Party president JP Nadda dismissed Gandhi's article as a 'blueprint for manufacturing a fake narrative.' He accused Gandhi of spreading conspiracy theories and defaming institutions out of 'frustration and desperation' over repeated electoral losses. 'Congress gets defeated election after election due to his antics,' Nadda said. 'Instead of introspecting, he cooks up bizarre conspiracies, cries foul, and defames institutions without any proof.' Responding to the EC's source-based statements, Gandhi posted on X, 'Releasing unsigned, evasive notes to intermediaries is not the way to respond to serious questions. You are a Constitutional body. If you have nothing to hide, answer the questions in my article and prove it by: Publishing consolidated, digital, machine-readable voter rolls for the most recent elections to the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabhas of all states including Maharashtra and releasing all post-5 pm CCTV footage from Maharashtra polling booths. Evasion won't protect your credibility. Telling the truth will,' he said. Citing a rise in voter turnout, Gandhi said, 'The polling turnout at 5 pm was 58.22 per cent. Even after voting closed, however, turnout kept increasing more and more. The final turnout was reported only the next morning to be 66.05 percent.' He said the jump of 7.83 percentage points equals 76 lakh voters, much higher than in past Maharashtra assembly elections. Gandhi also highlighted that new voters were added in only 12,000 booths across 85 constituencies—seats the BJP went on to win. In response, EC sources said over 6.4 crore voters cast their votes in Maharashtra between 7 am and 6 pm. They noted that about 58 lakh votes were cast each hour on average, which means roughly 1.16 crore voters could have voted in the last two hours. "Therefore, the casting of 65 lakh votes by electors in two hours is much below the average hourly voting trend," an EC official said.
