U.S. hockey player Matt Petgrave re-bailed on suspicion of manslaughter over death of Adam Johnson
Nottingham Panthers player Johnson, 29, died after being cut in the neck by a skate during a Challenge Cup match against the Sheffield Steelers on October 28, 2023, in what his club labelled a 'freak accident'.

In an unorthodox decision that raises questions over how far players should be held responsible for accidents such as this in sport, Petgrave was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in November 2023. He was later bailed and South Yorkshire Police confirmed he has now been re-bailed until May 29 2025.
The investigation into the circumstances of Johnson's death remains ongoing.

A South Yorkshire Police statement read: 'Any further updates or developments in this investigation ahead of the new bail expiry date will be issued proactively on our website.
'Our thoughts remain with Adam's family and friends.'
Petgrave has never been named by UK police but a crowdfunding account purporting to belong to him was launched in December to help him fight the allegations of manslaughter.
Petgrave was told to remain in the United Kingdom while the investigation was conducted. That bail has since been extended eight times — February 9, April 25, May 14, June 26, September 2, November 11, January 20 and most recently on February 28.
A message posted by an account claiming to be him on CrowdJustice — an online platform where individuals or groups can appeal for money to fund legal action — reads: 'I am seeking help to cover some of my legal costs whilst I am subject to police bail, as well as additional costs if the matter proceeds to criminal court. Any remaining funds will be donated to initiatives that promote safety in hockey.'
The message on the CrowdJustice page also claims that Petgrave is unable to work in the UK while he awaits a resolution to the police investigation.
The Athletic has been unable to contact Petgrave to confirm whether the page is genuine.

UK councillor acquitted over 'cut all their throats' speech
By Sam Tobin LONDON (Reuters) -A British councillor was on Friday acquitted of encouraging violent disorder for saying far-right activists should have their throats cut amid riots last year, drawing claims from right-wing politicians of a hypocritical "two-tier" justice system. Ricky Jones made the comments at a counter-protest in London after three girls were murdered in the north English town of Southport and was suspended by the ruling Labour party. Misinformation on social media said the teenager who committed the murders at a Taylor Swift-themed dance event was an Islamist migrant, fuelling days of violent riots including attacks on mosques and hotels housing asylum seekers. Jones, 58, was cleared by a jury following a trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court. He had made the remarks to a crowd gathered near an immigration advice centre in London after reports that far-right supporters were planning a protest. "They are disgusting Nazi fascists ... We need to cut all their throats and get rid of them all," he said, running a finger across his throat. Jones gave evidence that he did not intend his words to be taken literally and said his comments referred to far-right stickers with hidden razor blades found on a train. Right-wing politicians and activists said his case was an example of how Britain had an unfair police and justice system, with those who voice concerns about immigration treated differently to those who support liberal or left-wing causes. They contrasted Jones' treatment with that of Lucy Connolly, the wife of a Conservative councillor who was jailed for 31 months for inciting racial hatred for a post urging mass deportation of migrants and the burning of their hotels. Unlike Jones, she had pleaded guilty to the offence. Chris Philp, the opposition Conservative Party's home affairs spokesperson, said on X: "The development of two-tier justice is becoming increasingly alarming." Zia Yusuf, from the populist right-wing Reform UK party which is leading in opinion polls, also compared Jones' acquittal to Connolly's sentence. Prime Minister Keir Starmer was labelled "two-tier Keir" by some opponents last summer after claims some ethnic groups were policed more leniently than others, a suggestion that has been rejected by senior ministers, police chiefs and prosecutors.

Andre Johnson loses Hall of Fame ring to burglars
Current and former pro athletes continue to be targeted by thieves. Via Michael Shapiro of the Houston Chronicle, Hall of Fame receiver Andre Johnson recently was victimized by burglars. Among other things, his Hall of Fame ring was stolen. 'Andre Johnson is my brother,' rapper and Houston native Lil Keke said on Instagram. 'He's the first Houston Texan Hall of Famer. He dedicated his life here, his career here, and also he resides here as a Houstonian — that makes it much, much more important. Man, we family and this is a family message. Over the weekend somebody broke into my brother's home, took some items that represent his legacy, represent his dedication, his hard work, his family. We need to recover that and get that back.' The investigation is ongoing. Last year, a crime ring targeted multiple pro athletes, entering their residences when they were away for games. Eventually justice caught up with them. Whether justice catches up with those who stole Johnson's Hall of Fame ring remains to be seen. It would probably be better for police to get them first. If Johnson finds them, they may end up experiencing the Cortland Finnegan treatment.
