Three takeaways: LSU baseball beats Coastal Carolina in Game 1 of the CWS final
Inside Omaha's Charles Schwab Stadium, left-handed pitcher Kade Anderson led the Tigers to victory with his second complete game shutout of 2025. Using 130 pitches, he racked up 10 strikeouts.
The game's lone run game in the bottom of the first inning. Steven Milam roped an RBI single to center field with one out to score Derek Curiel. It was one of six hits for LSU, but pitching from both dugouts dominated the rest of the way.
Coastal Carolina got runners on base often early but couldn't take advantage of three hits and five free passes issued by Anderson. The southpaw remained strong throughout his final game for the Tigers, sticking with his breaking pitches when his fastball couldn't find the strike zone.
LSU baseball will return to action in Game 2 on Sunday, looking to clinch the national title.

Bullpen gets much-needed rest day
Anderson's complete game shutout kept the entire bullpen available for Sunday's contest. Relievers such as Chase Shores, Cooper Williams, and Jacob Mayers will have another day of rest heading into what could be the final game of the season.
Top relief arms Casan Evans and Zac Cowan also get another day of rest after getting starter-level work in the College World Series. Outside of Anderson and Anthony Eyanson, Evans and Cowan are LSU's best arms. Getting another full day of rest was key for both and puts LSU in a great position for Game 2, and if needed, a Game 3.
LSU could use Evans or Cowan out of the pen on Saturday and still have one left to start Game 3 if needed.
Milam's clutch-hitting continues
Milam racked up 13 RBI throughout the 2025 NCAA Tournament, including the lone run of Saturday's contest. The shortstop also batted in four runs apiece in each game of the Baton Rouge Super Regional against West Virginia.
Much of LSU's lineup has been inconsistent this postseason, but Milam continues to deliver quality at-bats, come through in the clutch, and be the glue that holds this group together.
The sophomore has peaked at the best time possible and will look to replicate that success on Sunday.
Defense plays large role
In a game decided by the thinnest margin, LSU made no errors while dealing with nine ground balls off the bats of Chanticleers' hitters. On a windy evening in Omaha, the Tigers caught seven fly balls.
Michael Braswell flashed the leather multiple times at the hot corner, firing across the diamond to Jared Jones at first base. Daniel Dickinson made tough grabs at second base as well.
There was also this key moment in the top of the third. With two runners on, Coastal Sebastian Alexander tried to steal third. He beat the throw, but Braswell kept the glove on and nailed Alexander off the bag to end the inning and the CCU rally.

The biggest questions facing each College Football Playoff title contender ahead of the 2025 season
We think there are nine legitimate contenders for the college football national championship ahead of the 2025 season. But none of those teams is anywhere close to perfect. Each of them have questions ahead of the second season of the 12-team College Football Playoff. Here are the biggest questions for each of our title-worthy teams (odds from BetMGM). [Previously: 5 dark horse teams that could sneak into title conversation] LSU (+1500 odds to win national title) Can the Tigers avoid another 0-1 start? Brian Kelly has made no secret of LSU's need to start the season with a win. The Tigers have lost their last five openers and are 0-3 in Kelly's time at LSU. LSU lost back-to-back games against Florida State in 2022 and 2023 before losing to USC to begin the 2024 season. The Tigers have the talent to make a run at the national championship, but the schedule is not forgiving. For a loss at Clemson on Aug. 30 to be overcome, LSU would likely have to go 7-1 in the SEC. No three-loss team made the College Football Playoff as an at-large in 2024. That could change in 2025, but does LSU really want to test that out? [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Notre Dame (+1200) What if a QB doesn't emerge? The Irish's quarterback competition is down to CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey after Steve Angeli transferred to Syracuse in the spring. Riley Leonard completed 67% of his passes a season ago, but he also threw for fewer than 200 yards in seven of Notre Dame's 16 games. Can the Irish get by with that lack of passing production again and make another title run? It seems doubtful, especially if neither Carr nor Minchey can provide the value Leonard did on the ground. Notre Dame turned to Leonard to make plays with his legs in crucial short-yardage situations time and time again in 2024. The run game will be very good with a stacked offensive line and Jeremiyah Love in the backfield. But whoever wins the QB job will need to deliver in big situations like Leonard did. Alabama (+1000) Will Alabama fix its penalty issues? Alabama found itself as the first team out of the playoff following a 9-3 campaign in 2024. The three losses came to Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Oklahoma. Against Tennessee, the Tide committed 15 penalties in a 24-17 defeat. Overall, Alabama committed 7.4 penalties per game last season and ranked 116th in the country in penalty rate. Only one playoff team, SMU, committed more penalties per game. Yes, there were Alabama teams under Nick Saban that committed more penalties per game than Kalen DeBoer's first team did. But in a loaded SEC, Alabama can't continue to make so many self-inflicted errors and hope to compete for the title. Clemson (+900) Can the Tigers beat multiple teams from the SEC? We're extremely high on the Tigers' chances to win the national title this season. And to do so, they'll likely have to beat at least two teams from the SEC. Clemson is 2-5 against SEC opponents over the past three seasons. Those two wins came in 2023 when Clemson beat South Carolina to end the regular season and took down Kentucky in the Gator Bowl. Outside of that, Clemson has lost twice to South Carolina, lost to Tennessee in the Orange Bowl after the 2022 season and fell to Georgia and Texas a season ago. LSU and South Carolina are on the regular season schedule in 2025 and the Tigers are likely going to face an SEC team or two in the College Football Playoff if they make a deep run like we think they can. If a national title is in the cards, Clemson is going to have to show it can take down the SEC's best. Oregon (+900) How will Oregon replenish its depth at receiver? With Tez Johnson, Traeshon Holden and Terrance Ferguson off to the NFL, Evan Stewart was set to be the only returning player on Oregon's roster who had more than 30 catches in 2024. But Stewart may miss a significant chunk of the 2025 season after suffering a knee injury during spring practices. He had 48 catches for 613 yards and five scores in 2024. Without Stewart in the fold for at least the start of the season, Oregon will need some new faces to step up for QB Dante Moore. The good news is that Oregon's offense under Will Stein is one of the most efficient in the country. Bo Nix and Dillon Gabriel each were Heisman finalists over the past two seasons and completed over 70% of their passes. Can Moore get close to those numbers with so much turnover at receiver? Penn State (+700) Can the Nittany Lions shake the big-game questions? It's time for Penn State to win a massive Big Ten game. Especially if it wants to be considered a serious national title contender. The Nittany Lions host Oregon and head to Ohio State in 2025. Those are the team's two toughest games of the regular season by far. Penn State lost 45-37 to Oregon in the Big Ten title game in December. The Nittany Lions made that championship game after Ohio State's final week loss to Michigan. It'll be a big advantage to play the Ducks in prime time at Beaver Stadium. Getting over the Ohio State hump may be even more important. The Buckeyes have won the last eight matchups between the schools dating back to Penn State's 24-21 win in 2016. Getting at least a split between Oregon and Ohio State is probably necessary for Penn State to play for the Big Ten title again. Georgia (+700) What if the offense lacks a reliable big-play threat again? Gunner Stockton showed enough in 1½ games at the end of the season to not be the biggest question mark on the Georgia offense. The 2024 Bulldogs offense was limited by a lack of big-play threats with the departures of Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey. Players like London Humphreys and Lawson Luckie showed flashes, but they combined for just 39 catches. Georgia added two key receivers through the transfer portal in Zachariah Branch (USC) and Noah Thomas (Texas A&M). Can either of them become the No. 1 target for Stockton? Thomas was the Aggies' leading receiver in 2024 with 39 catches for 574 yards and eight scores. Who will step up and fill the void? Ohio State (+525) Will the defense stay excellent with a host of new starters and a new coordinator? No starter has officially been named at quarterback for the Buckeyes, but the defense as a whole may be a bigger question than who takes the first snaps at QB against Texas. Ohio State returns All-American safety Caleb Downs, linebacker Sonny Styles and cornerback Davison Igbinosun from a unit that allowed 12.9 points per game in 2024. But eight other starters need to be replaced and defensive coordinator Jim Knowles is now at Penn State. In his place is former Lions coach Matt Patricia. He's coaching college football for the first time since he was a graduate assistant. There's still a ton of talent on this side of the ball, but how Patricia adjusts to the college game with a whole lot of new starters could determine how much of a shot the Buckeyes have of going back-to-back. Texas (+475) How will a revamped offensive line hold up in front of Arch Manning? Guard DJ Campbell is the only returning starter on Texas' offensive line. The Longhorns' front five were largely injury-free in 2024 outside of an ankle injury that first-round pick Kelvin Banks dealt with over the course of the season. Now Banks is with the Saints and right tackle Cam Williams also needs to be replaced. Trevor Goosby got experience at both tackle spots when Banks and Williams each missed a little bit of time in 2024 and he's penciled in as Banks' replacement on Manning's blind side. The offensive line will have to come together quickly against Ohio State in Week 1 and again at Florida on Oct. 4. But if it can hold its own, Texas could be in line for a special season.

Q&A: Azzi Fudd dishes on Paige Bueckers, UConn life, and more
UConn Huskies guard Azzi Fudd is up for the challenge that life brings. The Huskies star is entering her fifth season with head coach Geno Auriemma and the program. Under Auriemma's guidance, Fudd has numerous accolades to her name, including making the 2022 Big East All-Freshman Team and the 2025 First-team All-Big East team. Fudd also had a fantastic NCAA Tournament run with UConn this year as the program took home its 12th championship under Auriemma. During the tournament, she also earned Most Outstanding Player honors. As she prepares for the next phase in her hoops career, Fudd connected with Instagram and its Close Friends Only podcast to dive into her connection with Paige Bueckers, basketball, how she uses the app to stay connected to friends and more. Fudd told For the Win that she thought the whole experience would be fun and cool, and there was another thing that enticed her. "To do it with Paige [Bueckers] is another perk," she said. (We agree, Azzi Fudd. We agree.) For The Win chatted with Fudd about life at UConn, her favorite WNBA players, Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier (and, of course, Bueckers), plus what she really thinks about her famous "People's Princess" nickname. This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity. Why are Napheesa Collier and Paige Bueckers your favorite WNBA players? Are there any parts of their games that you would add to yours? Napheesa [Collier's] my favorite. I just think she is such a talented and skilled player and watching her play, it's just flawless. I would definitely take her footwork. She makes it look so easy, and I feel like no matter what ― she's one of those unguardable players because she always has a counter to what the defense is doing. There's nothing you can do to kind of stop her, which I love. ... You can tell she's a boss, and I love it. But she's also very chill throughout the game. And Paige [Bueckers], I love watching her play. I think she brings so much to the game, on both ends of the floor, and I love her energy and her passion that she plays with. You can tell how much she loves the game, but I definitely wouldn't take anything from a game because I'm better than her. [laughs] I would take her passing. She's a great passer. Do you feel any pressure now as the leader of UConn women's basketball? No, I don't feel any pressure. I'm excited. I think it's definitely gonna be a challenge for me because it's kind of outside of my comfort zone to use my voice as much. That's something I don't really do, but something that I know I need to work on. So, I love a challenge, and you know everyone's challenging me. So I gotta step up and do it. So I'm excited for that. Is there any advice that Geno Auriemma gave you about taking over? I think, you know, what the coaches have just been saying is, "You've been here the longest. You know what you're doing. You know what you're talking about. So trust that." What past UConn legends have shared wisdom with you? Sue [Bird] always has a bunch of wisdom, and I texted her about talking to her just to pick her brain, ask some questions, because when you think about leaders, I mean, UConn has created so many incredible basketball players. But I feel like when you think of one of the best generals, you think of her. So just picking her brain. I wanna pick her brain and ask her things and just how it was for her and how she's been able to be this incredible leader. We heard you like cooking videos. What's your best dish you would put up against anybody? My teammates make fun of me for everything I make because I'm healthy, and so they think everything is gross. Also, I only cook for myself. You know, when you cook for yourself, it's what you wanna eat and whatever. I feel like I love making breakfast. ... Or last year I made a bunch of salmon bowls, so with like quinoa, some sort of green, a grain, salmon and like other veggies on top. I'm also probably the biggest cottage cheese fan you'll ever meet. So I always put cottage cheese in whenever I'm eating, which is a hot take, but I'll stand by it any day of the week. But I do make a good salmon bowl. ...I feel like stir fry is another go-to. How do you feel about your "People's Princess" nickname? I mean I feel like when someone gives you a nickname, the odds it being a good nickname like this are very low like. I think this is a great nickname. I feel like there could be some really bad ones people came up with. So I'm, I'm happy that it was this. Will you continue using it this season? I have no idea. I don't talk about myself, I don't say like, "Oh,. I'm Azzi. You can call me the "people's princess." I don't say that. So [if] people continue to call me that, I won't be upset. But if people stop, then that's fine. Who is someone that you admire in women's college basketball that you feel like deserves more recognition? I'm gonna go with Ashlynn Shade and KK Arnold. I admire them a lot, and I feel like they could never have enough recognition for what they do and what they bring on and off the court for our team ― just the energy, the intensity and just the constant work ethic they have. I feel like they're two staples and a big part of the core of our team.

In LA battle, Angels overcome Ohtani, knock Dodgers out of first place
Aug. 14 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Angels scored four runs off Shohei Ohtani to help complete a sweep, while knocking the rival Los Angeles Dodgers out of first place in the National League West. The 6-5 setback Wednesday in Anaheim, Calif., paired with an 11-1 San Diego Padres victory over the San Francisco Giants, gave the Padres a one-game lead in the National League West. Just six weeks ago, the Dodgers held a nine-game lead atop the division. With their victory, the Angels also picked up their seventh consecutive win over the Dodgers, setting a Freeway Series record. "We are where we're at," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters. "We put ourselves in this spot. I wouldn't have expected us to be in second place right now." Ohtani got the Dodgers off to a strong start with a leadoff triple off Angels starter Kyle Hendricks. He came around to score when shortstop Mookie Betts singled three pitches later. With his first hit, Ohtani became the first pitcher since 1900 to lead off an MLB game with a triple. Dodgers catcher Will Smith smacked a 407-foot, two-run homer later in the inning for a 3-0 Dodgers lead. The Angels, who failed to score in the bottom of the first inning, broke through against Ohtani in the second. Left fielder Taylor Ward started the rally with a 375-foot leadoff homer. Infielder Luis Renfigo plated third baseman Yoan Moncada with an RBI sacrifice fly three at-bats later. Betts gave the Dodgers a cushion with an RBI single in the top of the fourth. Angels relief pitcher Ryan Zeferjahn walked Smith with the bases loaded in the same inning for a 5-2 Dodgers lead, but the visitors didn't score again. Angels shortstop Zach Neto raked a two-run double off Ohtani in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the deficit to one. Catcher Logan O'Hoppe hit two-run single off Dodgers reliever Edgardo Henriquez in the eighth to give the Angels their final advantage. Angels reliever Kenley Jansen retired the Dodgers in order in the top of the ninth to secure the three-game sweep. Ohtani went 1 for 4 with three strikeouts, a walk and a run scored. He allowed five hit and four runs over 4 1/3 innings. He also issued seven strikeouts, including two to former Angels teammate Mike Trout. Betts was the only Dodgers player with multiple hits. He went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Hendricks allowed six hits and five runs over 3 1/3 innings for the Angels, but was not on record for a decision. Zeferjahn, Jansen and fellow Angels relievers Andrew Chafin, Reid Detmers and Brock Burke combined to allow just one hit over 5 2/3 shutout innings. The Dodgers will host the Padres in a battle for first place at 10:10 p.m. EDT Friday in Los Angeles. The Angels (59-62) sit in fourth place in the American League West, nine games behind the division-leading Houston Astros (68-53). They will take on the last-place Athletics (54-69) at 10:05 p.m. Friday in West Sacramento, Calif.
