Once riding high in the Premiership, Cape Town City now find themselves navigating unfamiliar waters. The rhythm that led them to an impressive fifth-place finish in the 2023/24 season has faltered, replaced by uncertainty and a battle for survival.
Now, in a make-or-break scenario, they must overcome two determined NFD Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) sides—Casric Stars and Orbit College—to secure their place in the Betway Premiership.
This is uncharted territory for the Citizens, a club that has consistently finished within the top eight since the 2014/15 season, when they ended the campaign in 10th place. One of their finest moments came in the 2021/22 season, when they proudly claimed second place behind Mamelodi Sundowns.
However, their fortunes have since taken a troubling turn. A run of poor results, compounded by a series of coaching changes—including the exits of Eric Tinkler and Muhsin Ertugral—has left the team in a vulnerable position.

The 35-year-old is experienced both locally and internationally, and with his side now facing a situation this current crop of players hasn't truly encountered before, his leadership in marshalling the defense and guiding the team to make as few mistakes as possible will be crucial in overcoming the challenge posed by both Motsepe Foundation Championship sides.
The Citizens conceded 31 goals this past season, and many of their difficulties stemmed from an inability to keep clean sheets. With both sides locked in an intense back-and-forth battle, it was Phili's powerful finish in the 108th minute that proved decisive. AmaZulu, featuring several new faces after a squad overhaul, struck first through debutant Keagan Allen in the 19th minute. The former Moroka Swallows centre-back capitalised on a lapse in concentration from the hosts, staying alert after a set-piece. Stellenbosch pushed for a late winner in regulation, but AmaZulu held firm, forcing the game into extra time. With tired legs and both teams showing signs of fatigue, it was always going to take a moment of individual brilliance or composure to separate the sides — and Phili delivered exactly that. The winger, introduced late in the second half, found himself in space and fired a riproaring shot to beat Mzimela and send the home crowd into celebration. Stellenbosch now join Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United in the last four of the MTN8, with the final quarter-final tie set to determine the last semi-finalist. Gayton McKenzie's son Calvin Le John has revealed how he raised R50 million to purchase soccer club Siwelele FC, previous SuperSport United last month. The businessman is the firstborn of the Minister of Sport, Art and Culture who has taken over the family businesses. Le John – who uses his mother's maiden name – is hoping his new club fills the void left behind by Bloemfontein Celtics, which later became Royal AM. Speaking in his first interview, Calvin Le John answered burning questions about acquiring the 'new' PSL club, Siwelele FC. One of them was how he managed to raise R50 million to buy the club. Another was how and when the business transaction occurred. Gayton McKenzie's son revealed that the sale took place via an auction, and he bid R50 million for the club, which was ultimately accepted. 'I don't have 50 million lying around. I sold some properties to fund the project', Le He added that he sold shares to the family's diamond mine to a consortium to the sum of a whopping R90 million. Calvin Le John also shot down rumours the money was raised through corrupt tenders or via Gayton McKenzie's right-hand man, Kenny Kunene. He continued: 'I saw a rumour that I got a tender for R70 million, and that's a blatant lie.' 'I don't have any friends, associates, or family members who are doing any work in the city or the department of sports, for that matter. I don't do tenders. I tried, but seeing people being arrested is scary. 'I'm in different businesses, but I don't deal with the state'.. He added: 'If anybody has information about me receiving R70 million, let them bring it out. I have nothing to hide'. Le John added that SuperSport United required him to 'prove' how he acquired the funds to purchase the club. On Saturday, 9 August – which marks Women's Day in South Africa – Siwelele will make their debut in the league with a Betway Premiership match against Golden Arrows. Mammoth MTN8 task today for Richards Bay FC
NRB fans will have their eyes glued to their TV screens today as the Rich Boyz take on the mighty Mamelodi Sundowns in an MTN8 quarter final at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, Pretoria, at 6pm. Only the biggest optimists – and fanatical NRB supporters – give Richards Bay any chance of winning; but cup games are made for upsets and this might be another one of those. The encounter will be screened live on SuperSport channel 202. Meanwhile, Richards Bay have announced a venue change for their opening 2025/26 Betway Premiership fixture against Marumo Gallants on Saturday, 9 August. Five tough KZN Premier's Cup games contested over two rain-sodden days last weekend did significant damage to the uMhlathuze Stadium playing surface, necessitating a change of venue to allow sufficient time for remedial action to be completed. Due to have been the Rich Boyz' triumphant return to the newly revamped uMhlathuze Stadium after it was condemned by the PSL in September 2021, the decision has been taken to shift the game to the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi – where the NRB side has played its home fixtures over the past four seasons.
