All party delegations tell world leaders about India's new approach to combat cross-border terrorism
Tharoor made the remarks at a community event in New York as the delegation made a stopover — during which he and other members of the delegation also paid tributes at the 9/11 memorial — in the American city before leaving for Guyana.
New York/Manama/Seoul, May 25 (PTI) India now has a new approach in combating cross-border terrorism from Pakistan and anyone involved in such crimes will not go unpunished, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said here hours before he led a delegation of Parliamentarians to Guayana.
Separate Indian delegations also briefed political leaders in South Korea and Slovenia on India's policy of zero tolerance in the wake of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people died.
'India stands together in declaring zero tolerance for terrorism,' External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said in a post on X as he lauded the efforts put in by the all-party delegations.
In an interaction hosted by the Consulate General of India in New York with a select group of prominent members of the Indian-American community and individuals from leading media and think tanks on Saturday, Tharoor said that India's message to Pakistan has been clear: 'We didn't want to start anything. We were just sending a message to terrorists.' 'This has now got to be a new norm. No one sitting in Pakistan is going to be allowed to believe that they can just walk across the border and kill our citizens with impunity. There will be a price to pay, and that price has been going up systematically,' Tharoor said.
Pakistan covets India's territory, and they want to have it at any price, he said, adding: 'And if they can't get it through conventional means, they're willing to get it through terrorism. That is not acceptable, and that's really the message that we are here to give all of you in this country and elsewhere'.
Tharoor and other members of the delegation visited the 9/11 Memorial in New York 'in a spirit of solidarity' but which was also meant 'to send a very strong message that we are here in a city, which is still bearing the scars of that savage terrorist attack, in the wake of yet another terrorist attack in our own country,' he said, a reference to the April 22 Pahalgam attack.
In Bahrain capital Manama, after meeting of the delegation, led by BJP MP Baijayant Jay Panda, with Bahrain's Deputy Prime Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa; Ali bin Saleh Al Saleh, the chairman of Shura Bahrain, the upper house of the legislative body of Bahrain, and Abdulnabi Salman Ahmed, First Deputy Speaker, Council of Representatives.
The Indian delegation 'underscored India's resolve to fight against terrorism and strengthen bilateral ties,' said a post on X by the Indian Embassy in Bahrain.
On their first day Saturday, the Indian MPs also met prominent Indians and civil society members when Panda said, 'Bahrain and India have a deep and long-standing relationship… I would like to thank the government of Bahrain for the consistent stand that it has taken. We truly appreciate Bahrain's strong comments during recent developments.' AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, also a member of the delegation, while answering a question during the meeting, said, 'Our government has sent us here, and various other delegations comprising all party members across various parts of the world, so that the world knows of the threat that India has been facing.' 'The terrorists have justified killings of innocent people in India. …. In our opinion, there is no difference between terrorists in Pakistan and ISIS takfiri ideology,' Owisi said.
In South Korea, the all-party parliamentary delegation led by JD(U) MP Sanjay Jha on Sunday shared with the members of the Indian diaspora the insights on the military campaign Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack.
The delegation reiterated the Modi government's stand against terrorism and said that dialogue with Pakistan cannot co-exist with terror.
The team also held 'substantive interactions' with eminent Korean dignitaries, including former Foreign Minister Dr. Yoon Young-kwan, Vice-Chairman of Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee Rep. Kim Gunn, former Vice Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, Director of the National Counter-Terrorism Center, Major Gen Shin Sang-gyun, former Korean Ambassadors to India, Amb. Shin Bong-kil and Amb. Lee Joon-gyu, the Indian Embassy in Seoul said in a post on X.
One of the members of the delegation to Seoul, Abhishek Banerjee of TMC, said, 'The dialogue spanned issues of peace, regional stability, and strengthening multilateral efforts to confront the threat of terror,' he said in a post on X.
The multi-party delegation led by NCP MP Supriya Sule met with Dr. Hamda Al Sulaiti, Deputy Speaker of the Qatar Shura Council and other Qatari MPs in Doha on Sunday taking 'India's strong message against terrorism to the world!' Meanwhile, the all-party delegation led by DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi reached Slovenia for 'Taking Bharat's message to the world.' All the delegations described the Indian diaspora as a 'force multiplier' and asked the members to help sensitise public opinion and political opinion in their respective countries about India's stance on combating terror.
These delegations are among the seven multi-party delegations India has tasked to visit 33 global capitals to reach out to the international community on Pakistan's designs and India's response to terror.
Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which claimed 26 lives. India carried out precision strikes as part of Operation Sindoor on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the early hours of May 7.
It was followed by Pakistan's attempt to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10. The Indian side responded strongly to the Pakistani actions.
The on-ground hostilities ended with an understanding of stopping the military actions following talks between the directors general of military operations of both sides on May 10. PTI YAS NSA AMJ NPK GRS AO NPK NPK

High drama marks Panchayat polls in Nainital
Dehradun: Uttarakhand high court on Thursday took cognizance of allegations that five elected representatives in Nainital district panchayat were missing ahead of voting. However, police said that affidavits submitted by the five elected members claimed they were staying away voluntarily. Counting of votes underway for Uttarakhand Panchayat Elections, in Nainital, on July 31 (PTI) Congress leaders alleged that they were abducted to influence the outcome of election of district panchayat president for which voting was underway on Thursday . A division bench of chief justice G Narendar and Justice Alok Mahra, hearing a public interest litigation, questioned the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nainital PN Meena on whether the missing representatives had been traced. The SSP said security personnel had visited their homes as per earlier court directions to provide protection 10 days before voting, but were told by relatives that the representatives were visiting family and did not require security. Polling was held on Thursday for the posts of district panchayat presidents as well as vice presidents and Block Pramukhs. The SSP added that the police had received affidavits from the five representatives stating they were travelling and had asked that no case be registered if anyone reported them missing. Two more similar affidavits were received on Thursday. Advocate General SN Babulkar told the court that all representatives had confirmed they were abstaining from voting on their own will. However, senior counsel DS Patni presented a pen drive with video footage allegedly showing one of the representatives, Dikar Singh Mewari, being dragged away by unidentified men, some of whose faces were visible, while an armed policeman looked away. Another video purportedly showed three more affidavit signatories being forcibly removed from a polling booth. The bench directed that both videos be handed over to the Nainital SSP and District Magistrate Vandana Singh for examination. Counsel DS Mehta told the court that an attempt to file a kidnapping complaint naming the alleged abductors was rejected by the Tallital SHO. The SSP assured the bench that action would be taken against any police personnel found guilty of dereliction of duty. Family members of three missing representatives — Uma Bisht, sister of Deep Singh Bisht; Vinod Kotalia, brother of Pramod Singh; and Sanjeev Jantwal, son of Vipin Singh Jantwal-appeared before the court — each detailing how their relatives were taken away. Kotalia alleged that his brother was abducted by a group . Jantwal said he had seen a video of his father's abduction on a Facebook account. The court ordered that its directions be sent immediately to the district magistrate and SSP, with affidavits kept in the safe custody of the Registrar (Judicial). The matter will be heard next on August 18. Earlier, high drama was witnessed during the election for district panchayat president and block Pramukh in Nainital, turned tense on Thursday with clashes, allegations of kidnapping and even firing between supporters of the BJP and Congress. Congress leaders Yashpal Arya, Khatima MLA Bhuvan Kapri, Haldwani MLA Sumit Hridayesh, former MLA Sanjeev Arya, district panchayat president candidate Pushpa Negi, and 10 members arrived at the High Court while a hearing was underway before Chief Justice G Narender and Justice Alok Mahra. They alleged before the bench that 'people of the ruling party' assaulted them and 'tried to kidnap some members.' Showing election result certificates for 15 members, they claimed that 'five of their local leaders were missing.' The court directed District Magistrate Vandana Singh and SSP Nainital PN Meena to appear virtually within minutes. It ordered both officers to 'maintain law and order' and ensure 'peaceful and fair elections,' instructing that members be brought to the polling station in police security. High Court security officer Rakesh Bisht was tasked with escorting the 10 district panchayat members who were in court to the polling station under police protection. In the block pramukh election at Betalghat in Nainital districts, three rounds of firing were reported amid clashes between supporters of both parties. Police dispersed the crowd and began an investigation. Both sides accused each other of instigating violence. BJP state president Mahendra Bhatt alleged that Yashpal Arya was 'trying to influence the voting,' while Congress state president Karan Mahara accused the BJP of 'assaulting Congress leaders.' District Magistrate Vandana Singh, who appeared in the court in the evening again, told the court that she will recommend repolling for zila panchayat elections to the state election commission (SEC)

CM Yogi blames Cong for Partition, lauds PM for push to heal ‘old wounds'
Lucknow: At an event to mark the eve of Independence, designated as 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' by Prime Minister Narendra Modi , Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that it was Congress appeasement policies that led to India's division, the Partition of a 'Sanatan Bharat'. Blaming the opposition for having ignored the plight of those displaced by the Partition, the CM said that those who get citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act will be given land and full rehabilitation in UP. Calling the Partition a "dark chapter" in India's history, which inflicted deep wounds on the nation, Yogi credited PM Modi with reviving this forgotten history. "Today, the entire country mourns, remembering the horrors of Aug 14, 1947," he said, while inaugurating an exhibition marking 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day'. Later in the day, the CM led a silent march against the Partition and then addressed a seminar on it. The CM said that at one end, revolutionaries embraced martyrdom for India's freedom and on the other, Congress divided the nation in its greed for power. He alleged that the Congress policies led to the ethnic cleansing of Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists from Pakistan. "The violence claimed 15-20 lakh lives and displaced crores, marking one of the darkest episodes in history. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The 5 Books Warren Buffett Recommends You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo This Partition was a moral and humanitarian crime, executed under the appeasement policy of the Congress. During this time, women faced humiliation and brutality. This Partition gave birth to a monster like Pakistan, which still engages in various conspiracies against India," the CM said. He also accused the then Congress govt of showing complete apathy towards the displaced persons. The CM said that no memorials were built and no museums were established for Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Christians who were forced to leave their ancestral homes. Their suffering, he said, was erased from public memory. Against this, PM Modi granted citizenship and rehabilitation rights to refugees under the CAA, because of which, for the first time, displaced people in J&K and other regions received citizenship, he said. Hitting out at Congress further, the CM said that it was the same party which first murdered democracy under the guise of Emergency and then orchestrated the massacre of Sikhs in 1984. Instead of facing the consequences of its leaders' wrong decisions, it was still trying to mislead the public. He also stressed the importance of connecting the younger generation with history, saying that the exhibition portrayed the grim reality of Partition, its massacres, riots and forced migrations. New portal to help secure BPL ration cards within 24 hours
Bengaluru: The govt will soon launch a web portal which will enable those eligible to secure below poverty line (BPL) ration cards within 24 hours, food and civil supplies minister KH Muniyappa told the legislative assembly Thursday. The initiative is aimed at streamlining the application process and making it more transparent, while also ensuring the economically poor secure benefits under the public distribution system (PDS). "We will launch the dedicated portal next month and eligible applicants can get BPL cards in 24 hours. I request people to make use of it," Muniyappa said in response to a question from BJP's Bharath Shetty Y. "We are committed to eliminating ineligible cards," Muniyappa said. "Our earlier efforts led to some confusion and I request the cooperation of all, including the opposition. I also appeal to those who are ineligible to voluntarily convert their cards from BPL to APL." A BPL family in Karnataka is defined as one with an annual income below Rs 1.25 lakh. Benefits under the BPL category include 10kg of rice per family member under the Anna Bhagya scheme, though the govt is currently dispensing cash in lieu of 5kg rice. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? Techno Mag Learn More Undo A survey by the food and civil supplies department revealed that lakhs of ineligible people, including thousands of govt employees, had obtained BPL cards. The minister said this distorted distribution of benefits meant for the poor and put unnecessary pressure on the PDS network. In Nov 2023, Muniyappa had launched a drive to weed out fake and ineligible BPL cards, but it sparked controversy after several genuine beneficiaries complained that their cards were wrongly deleted. The backlash forced the govt to halt the exercise. Muniyappa acknowledged the issue, stating that political consensus was needed to resume the clean-up. "Eligible cardholders can reapply even if their cards are removed by mistake," he said. Highlighting the scale of the problem, the minister also said that Karnataka's BPL coverage stands at 75% of the population — a figure he described as "astronomically abnormal" compared with neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where BPL coverage is around 50%. He was confident the new portal, coupled with a transparent verification process, would help ensure benefits reach only those who genuinely qualify. He reiterated that cooperation from all political parties and the public was essential to make the system fairer and more efficient.
