Loose Women star hints 'plenty of people are nauseating to work with' after scandal
As both a TV executive and as a contestant, Loose Women star Janet Street-Porter has some history with MasterChef. She reached the final three in Celebrity MasterChef in 2013, losing out to a 'boring' effort from comedian Ade Edmonson, before returning victoriously in 2020.
Janet has strong views on Gregg Wallace, most of them negative. His response to the growing scandal that has surrounded him has been 'disastrous, absolutely disastrous,' she said – adding that he's by no means the only problematic person in British TV.
'There are plenty of people like that,' she said on the Off Air with Jane and Fi podcast, 'there are plenty of people who are quite nauseating to work with. But you know, we just get on with it.'
Still slightly resentful about having been denied a MasterChef win in 2013, Janet says that the dessert she invented for the final was later adopted by John Torode's restaurant.
'I got to know John and Gregg pretty well then,' she recalled. 'I already knew Gregg because he delivered vegetables to my partner's restaurant. We knew him as Gregg the Veg from the year dot. Then I did MasterChef the second time, which was a Christmas one, which I'm very pleased to say I won.'
During her second stint on the show, Janet says she noticed 'a bit of a distance' between presenters Gregg and John, adding that 'they weren't quite so pally with each other.'
The MasterChef controversy erupted late last year, after a number of people, including former Newsnight host Kirsty Wark, alleged that Gregg made inappropriate sexual comments behind-the-scenes.
After the story broke, Sir Rod Stewart weighed in with an accusation that Wallace of 'humiliated' his wife Penny Lancaster on Celebrity MasterChef in 2021, and Geordie Shore star Charlotte Crosby claimed he had been 'extremely unpleasant' to her when she appeared on the BBC show.
Former presenter Melanie Sykes later claimed that a 'jaw-dropping' interaction with Wallace on Celebrity MasterChef had made her decide to quit TV.
In response, Wallace posted a video to Instagram suggesting that the allegations had all come from 'middle-class women of a certain age', prompting backlash from former Celebrity MasterChef contestants including Ulrika Jonsson, Kirstie Allsopp and Emma Kennedy.
Following the outcry, Wallace backtracked, apologising for any 'offence' or 'upset' his remarks had caused, and said he had 'been under a huge amount of stress' when he posted his video.
Earlier this month, following his formal dismissal from MasterChef and the results of an investigation being published, Wallace posted another video in which he said he had been cleared of the 'most serious and sensational accusations' against him, while apologising for some jokes he had made, which he accepted had been inappropriate 'at times.'
He hinted that he 'wouldn't go quietly' after being axed from the show.
An allegation of racist language being used by Wallace's co-presenter John Torode emerged at around the same time. Torode insisted that he had 'no recollection' of the incident and was 'shocked and saddened' by the news, adding that he knows any racially-offensive language 'is wholly unacceptable in any environment'.
Both Torode and Wallace continue to deny the claims made against them, and will no longer be presenting MasterChef and Celebrity MasterChef.
But despite the recent controversies around the series – and the two hosts' behaviour – Janet agrees that the already-shot new series featuring Gregg and John should be transmitted.
She explained: 'I think the reason why it should be put out is, number one, it will be absolutely edited to remove anything that could cause offence or be construed in an unacceptable way.
"Secondly, the time and effort that the contestants put into MasterChef is tremendous. And I think that to deny them their airtime and their moment in the spotlight is cruel, because what happened was nothing to do with them.'
Janet added that the BBC has a duty to salvage as much as it can, given that the money has already been spent on shooting the episodes.
The Loose Women host admits that she made her own mistakes during her time as a TV producer: 'I was a BBC executive,' she said. 'I was in charge of Junior MasterChef for about five minutes till they took it off me for being slightly overbearing to the contestants.'
Janet was unwilling to go into much detail about her own personal MasterChef controversy, beyond saying that she 'made some child cry because I said something about kikifruit with a pork chop.'

Myleene, who split from Irish bodyguard Quinn in 2013, went on to reveal the pair denied anything dodgy was going on but, despite the fact she had caught them ahead of any act taking place, she knew what was about to happen: "I'm in my house, it's my party. They weren't having sex, but they were unzipping each other.' She said that at first the pair told her she was mistaken but, ignoring their denials, she ended the party and asked everyone to leave. She said: "I kicked everyone out of the party, including his mum and dad. They went back to Ireland and his dad said: 'He doesn't get it from me'. 'I remember thinking that was quite a weird thing to say.' The former One Show host started dating Quinn in 2001 and they stayed together for 12 years, sharing two children together, Ava, 17, and Hero, 13. She explained to MAFS expert Paul that she saw the ordeal as a 'pretty big red flag' but still went through with the wedding in 2011, after Quinn blamed the incident on being drunk. Myleene also revealed she feels no bad blood towards the mystery celebrity but found it 'difficult' at first to watch them over the years. Myleene, now dating Simon Motson, added: 'I've made peace with that situation now, but for a long time, it was very difficult to see their life. 'My life literally just broke apart very, very publicly and their life, they've managed to continue building a family brand on it.' Myleene said 'first and foremost' her main concern has always been her kids and she's tried to shield them from her life in the public eye, though it's not always easy. She said: 'I was doing breakfast TV and I went to get out the car and I thought, 'I can't'... I was right in the middle of the divorce... "And I opened the door, and I couldn't get out the car. I couldn't breathe. Finances were spiralling because I thought, 'I'm going to lose everything'." On her drinking, Myleene added: "I remember waking up and thinking it's ok to have a drink at 11am, because I hadn't had a drink in five hours." After the split from Quinn, she revealed her reported £11million fortune was at risk because she'd refused a pre-nuptial agreement. She told the Mirror at the time: 'I married a convicted drug dealer and didn't sign a prenup. What was I thinking? When I say that sentence aloud, I realise how stupid it was... Now long-term Loose Women panel member Janet, 78, has hinted that "older" members of the team are safe, but younger newcomers are likely to face the chop. "There are no plans to get rid of the older women despite of what some people have said," Janet insisted. "In fact, the reserve is true. "ITV actually put out a statement saying we are the valued members of the show because the audience totally relates to us." Janet, who joined the panel in 2011, continued to Bella Magazine: "I think Loose Women has become a programme that is trusted by a lot of women because we talk about the issues that they are concerned about - whether it's female health, domestic violence, or how politicians don't really understand working women. "I think the show has managed to connect women who wouldn't otherwise have a voice. "And it's delivered with a lot of laughs because we don't take ourselves too seriously." Last month it was revealed that producers had decided to drop the live studio audience next year as part of a series of cost-cutting changes to its daytime programming. However, the change has prompted concern among production staff and presenters, including Ruth Langsford, Kaye Adams, Nadia Sawalha and Charlene White, who rely on audience reactions to shape the tone of the live discussions. Loose Women star admits she is 'absolutely devastated' and 'can't get over it' as her friend and co-star has been axed in brutal ITV cutbacks A source told MailOnline: "The panelists are really upset over the decision to axe the live studio audience from the show. "It's what sets the series apart from the rest of ITV daytime and now there are massive fears that viewers will switch off completely. "The only concern now is to cut costs and having a live studio audience can be expensive, with the added need for security and a warmup artist. "Presenters already know how it feels to broadcast the show without an audience because that's what happened during the pandemic, and they all know it creates low mood and lack of atmosphere." An ITV source told The Sun: "While there is a proposal to not have a studio audience for Loose Women from 2026, that doesn't necessarily mean that we'll never have a studio audience again, it just won't be in the same way as it is now. "At this stage we are still exploring new ways of working and producing the show when we move to a new studio next year." Last month, Kaye Adams broke her silence on the chaos at Loose Women, admitting she's had sleepless nights over the cuts. Speaking on her podcast, How To Be 60, Kaye said she felt as though 'the rug had been pulled' from underneath her. The 62-year-old confessed: 'It did come out of the blue. "I didn't anticipate it, which is probably stupid in retrospect. You get into a sort of rhythm of life. "I had a couple of sleepless nights I have to say, because it's just like the rug's been pulled from under your feet – what has been familiar.' Kaye, who is one of Loose Women's main anchors, said: 'It's going to have an impact. Lots of people will lose their jobs completely which is terrible. It's a huge change. 'But I gave myself a talking to and I listened to my own advice for once – change is hard, but it can be good. 'The past is a trap, don't fear the future – I'm telling myself all these things. And maybe this is the nudge that I needed to make some changes in my life and I'll just have to go with it.' It has been rumoured that the pool of Loose Women panellists will be reduced as part of the cutbacks, which will be introduced from January. So far none of the hosts know if their livelihoods are at stake. It is not yet known whether younger panellists, such as former Love Island contestant Olivia Attwood, 34, and influencer GK Barry, 25, will be favoured over veteran stars including Janet Street-Porter, 78, and Jane Moore, 63.
