Polka Loco: From Minnie Mouse to Kate Middleton — why we're all still dotty for spots
And in ten years, 2025 polka dot print has made a massive resurgence with fashion lovers going polka loco – for dot dresses, spotted shirts and circle print skirts.
The polka dot trend was on show at last week's Punchestown Festival where an array of sartorial conscious racegoers pouting their very best polka dot feet forward. Ciara Denvir, from Belfast, who was the overall winner of the Bollinger Best Dressed at the Punchestown Festival. Pic: Michael Chester
But polka dot fashion is not merely the purvey of cutesy cartoon mice or high society as the high stress is polka dot heaven which people are quite simply dotty about.
The iconic Disney character Minnie made her debut in 1928 at the Walt Disney Animation Studio wearing what has become an instant recognisable trademark pink and white polka dot dress. Fun Minnie Mouse fact – the now-legendary dots were initially excluded in the early films due to the difficulty of animating them. Disney alternatively depicted the nostalgic spotted skirt in still images. But first a quick sartorial step back in time to see how this particular style of print has ,not only lasted, but has evolved and reinvented through the ages.
For most our very first introduction to the polka dot print in fashion came courtesy of that little very stylish minx herself Minnie Mouse. Minnie Mouse. Pic:for Disney
hen in the 19020's Madame Fashion herself Coco Chanel integrated the pattern into her designs with the simple polka dot now an emblem of empowering women as Chanel server more transformed the playful print into one that exuded feminine flair.
The spot's legacy continued to dot into the '80s and '90s when the Princess of fashion herself Princess Diana cut a very dotted dash as she graced the royal box at the 1988 Ascot dressed in a classic navy and white polka dot dress. So while polka dots carry flirty and fun connotations and the innocence of childhood and carefree days they also exude a touch of elegance blended with high-society sophistication.
So whether you're a Minnie Mouse fan or an adorer of Diana, spotted fashion is something we can all get dotty about.

Vanderpump Rules spin off relocates from Italy to VERY unexpected town in the UK
It's definitely going to be a change of scenery SCENERY SWITCH-UP Vanderpump Rules spin off relocates from Italy to VERY unexpected town in the UK Real Housewives of Beverly Hills legend Lisa Vanderpump's spin-off show, Vanderpump Villa, is set for a huge shake-up for its upcoming third series - relocating from the stunning castle in Italy to a farmhouse in the far less glamorous climes of Milton Keynes. In a move that will see fans scratching their heads, the show - which airs on Hulu in the US and Disney + globally - has ditched the fancy European settings of the previous two seasons for an altogether more down-to-earth base. 4 The super-glam Vanderpump Rules spin off is relocating from Italy to Milton Keynes Credit: Hulu 4 The show used to be set in this stunning Italian castle Credit: Hulu A telly insider said: "Bosses have settled on a location house in Newport Pagnell to film the next run. It's rural and will probably look impressive to US viewers who will just see the English countryside and think it's romantic, but anyone from Britain knows Newton Pagnell is a stone's throw from Milton Keynes' city centre - a place that couldn't be less showbizzy if it tried. It's a man-made commuter city at the end of the day. "Obviously Lisa Vanderpump is British, so you can understand why the showrunners wanted a Lady of the Manor type vibe for the upcoming episodes, but you would imagine they would have plumped for a mansion in the Cotswolds, or an old English castle in Kent." The first series of Vanderpump Villa was filmed at a French chauteau and aired last year. The second series relocated to Umbria and has been shot but is yet to air. Lisa and her husband Ken, who also appeared on RHOBH, made their money owning various restaurants and clubs in London, before decamping to LA where they opened eateries and bars such as SUR and Villa Blanca. Lisa Vanderpump 'pushed out' of Vanderpump Rules as producers attempt to 'minimize' her involvement with filming Lisa then shot to fame as part of the original cast of Beverly Hills housewives, and enjoyed success as the show's breakout star from 2010 to 2019, but left the show after a series of on-camera spats with the other wives.
