9 Airbags In Rs 1.5 Crore SUV But One 'Mistake' Leads To Nashik Businessman's Death In Crash
Last Updated:
As another speeding vehicle splashed water onto the windshield of the SUV, the driver's visibility was momentarily lost. In those crucial seconds, the vehicle veered out of control
The tragic death of prominent Nashik-based industrialist Sunil Hekre sparked fresh questions over both road safety and the structural integrity of Maharashtra's much-hyped Samruddhi Mahamarg. Hekre, who was travelling with his family in a high-end Mercedes GLS 400D SUV, died after the vehicle met with a horrific accident near Igatpuri. Ironically, despite the luxury SUV being equipped with nine airbags, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and top-tier safety features, a single moment of lost control led to a fatal crash.
According to preliminary investigations, Hekre's son was behind the wheel of the Rs 1.5 crore SUV. The family was returning to Nashik from Mumbai when the incident occurred near Shahpur. Eyewitness reports and police inputs suggest that water had accumulated on the highway due to rain. As another speeding vehicle splashed water onto the windshield of the SUV, the driver's visibility was momentarily lost. In those crucial seconds, the vehicle veered out of control.
The SUV, reportedly at a high speed, skidded, flipped over, and breached into the opposite lane before slamming into the side grill. Despite the deployment of all airbags, the impact was catastrophic. Sunil Hekre, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time, was thrown out of the vehicle. He succumbed to his injuries on the spot. His wife and both children, including the son who was driving, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital. The son remains in critical condition.
The incident has cast a dark shadow over the Nashik industrial community, where Hekre was a well-known and respected figure. His untimely death has triggered an outpouring of grief, even as it reignites debates around road conditions and accident-prone stretches on the Samruddhi Mahamarg.
Launched with much fanfare as Maharashtra's flagship expressway project, the Samruddhi Mahamarg has been mired in safety concerns. Multiple fatal accidents have been reported in recent months, raising red flags over design flaws, maintenance lapses, and absence of adequate signage and water drainage systems.
Experts have pointed out that while modern vehicles come with state-of-the-art safety tech, the effectiveness of these features diminishes when external conditions, such as poorly maintained roads and reckless driving by other motorists, are not controlled.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu's petition rejected by court amid tensions with Iran, accused of serious charges including..., was seeking two...
(Photo: AP/Alamy) New Delhi: Amid tensions with Iran, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has received a major blow from a Jerusalem court. The District Court on Friday, 27 June 2025 rejected a petition seeking a two-week postponement of the hearing in three corruption cases against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Judge Rivka Friedman-Feldman said that the petition submitted by Netanyahu's lawyer Amit Hadad did not provide any solid basis or reason that would be sufficient to cancel the hearing. Netanyahu submits copy of his schedule A few hours after the court's decision, the Prime Minister also presented a second petition, in which he also submitted a copy of his schedule for the next week to prove that he needed to postpone the hearing. Netanyahu's lawyer argued on Thursday, June 26, that amid the ongoing ceasefire after the recent war with Iran, the Prime Minister needed two weeks of relief to focus on extremely important bilateral, national and security matters. What was Israeli PM's schedule? During this petition, several media reports said that Israel and the USA were planning a comprehensive agreement to end the Gaza war and normalize the situation with Arab countries, although there has been no official confirmation of this. What is Netanyahu accused of? Prime Minister Netanyahu is accused of bribery, fraud and breach of trust in three separate corruption cases. He denies all the allegations and claims that all this is part of a political conspiracy, in which the police and the state prosecution department have falsely filed charges against him. Hollywood connection The accusations include accepting some $200,000 in gifts such as cigars and champagne from two billionaires, Hollywood-based Israeli movie mogul Arnon Milchan and Australian magnate James Packer, according to a Times of Israel report. Deep anger at court's decision Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich expressed deep anger at this decision of the court and prosecutors. He said that it is extremely unfortunate that the court and the prosecutors have failed to understand national priorities and interests. This situation is a big failure for the country. National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir also described the decision as out of touch with reality and reiterated US President Donald Trump's appeal in which he demanded a complete halt to the trial. Likud Party MP Tali Gottlieb said on X that she is fed up with the insulting treatment being meted out to the Prime Minister. She expressed hope that Netanyahu will maintain his struggle, pride and strength, as he has shown to Israel.

Banks liable for effecting payment on forged cheques, rules Kerala high court
Kochi: Kerala high court has held that banks are liable for effecting payment on forged cheques and, in one case, directed the Bank of Baroda to return the lost amount of Rs 57 lakh to the petitioners, along with 6% interest per annum, for having encashed cheques bearing forged signatures. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A bench of Justices Sathish Ninan and P Krishna Kumar passed the order on June 13 while allowing the petitions filed by Minar Textile Industries, Kozhikode, and its sister concerns. The petitioners had challenged the trial court's order dated Jan 30, 2015, which dismissed their suits seeking recovery of the amount. According to the petitioners, cheques bearing forged signatures of the authorised signatory were negligently honoured by Vijaya Bank (now merged with Bank of Baroda). While 47 cheques were encashed in total, 32 were found to have been paid to third parties, causing a loss of Rs 57 lakh to the petitioners. The suits were instituted for the recovery of these amounts, but the trial court dismissed them, prompting the appeal. In response, the bank contended that the forgery had been committed by an employee of the petitioners and that it could not be held liable. High court rejected this defence, holding that the contention was unsustainable in view of the binding principles laid down by the Supreme Court regarding a banker's liability on forged cheques. The court relied on the apex court's ruling in Canara Bank vs Canara Sales Corporation (1987), which held that if the signature on a cheque is not genuine, there is no mandate to the bank to make payment, and the bank cannot evade liability by citing customer negligence, such as carelessly leaving a cheque book accessible to third parties. HC also noted that all incidents related to the forged cheques took place within a span of three months, and that the petitioners acted promptly upon discovering the fraud. There was no evidence to suggest that the petitioners were aware of the forgery before the encashment of the cheques. Accordingly, the court held that the bank was liable for having effected payment on forged cheques and set aside the trial court's order. Taking into account prevailing interest rates in banking transactions, HC directed the Bank of Baroda to return the amount of Rs 57 lakh to the petitioners with interest at 6% per annum from the date of the suit till the date of realisation.

Kannur tourism circuit graft: Kerala HC junks plea against further proceedings
Kochi: High court has dismissed a petition seeking to quash the final report and further proceedings in a vigilance case alleging corruption involving Rs 46.34 lakh in connection with the Palakkayam Thattu tourism triangle circuit in Kannur. The bench of Justice A Badharudeen dismissed the petition filed by Saji Varghese of Kannur, the first accused in the case, observing that since the prosecution's allegations make out a prima facie case, the petitioner's plea of innocence is a matter to be decided by the trial court on the basis of evidence. In 2016, the district collector and chairman of Kannur DTPC granted administrative sanction for the construction of the circuit at an estimated cost of Rs 1 crore. The implementation of the project was entrusted to FACT-RCF Building Products Ltd (FRBL), Kochi. Subsequently, based on allegations of misappropriation of funds, the vigilance and anti-corruption bureau registered a case and submitted a final report. The final report alleged that the three accused, including the petitioner, had conspired to misappropriate funds, resulting in a loss of Rs 46.34 lakh to the govt. Finding a prima facie case in the allegations, the court dismissed the petition.
