SIR of poll rolls will help remove bogus voters in riverine areas: Assam CM
GUWAHATI Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday (August 11, 2025) said a special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls would help remove bogus voters in the State's riverine areas. Such areas, dotted with chars (sandbars), are primarily inhabited by Bengali-speaking or migrant Muslims, often perceived as Bangladeshi in Assam. 'In the chars and other riverine areas, the voter list is filled with the names of the deceased and individuals living elsewhere. Yet, these areas often witness a 100% voting,' the Chief Minister told journalists in western Assam's Chirang. He said linking the names of voters with their Aadhaar numbers during the SIR process would prevent duplication and ensure cleaner electoral rolls. Slams Rahul The Chief Minister also criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for opposing the SIR of the voter lists in Bihar, where Assembly polls are due later this year. 'He is not clear about what he wants. He should tell the Election Commission to revise the voter lists with Aadhaar-linking so that a person cannot vote in two places,' he said. 'If the voter lists are so erroneous, how did the Congress win in Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana? After EVMs, he is using the voter list as a weapon now,' the Chief Minister said. He also defended the eviction drives across the State, rejecting allegations that these were being carried out in minority-dominated areas. 'We are evicting Miya Muslim encroachers from forest land, village grazing reserves, and professional grazing reserves. Our people do not encroach upon such lands. Unlike the tribal people, non-tribals are not eligible for land deeds in such areas,' the Chief Minister said. Miya is a pejorative term for Muslims with roots in present-day Bangladesh. He asserted that protests by organisations such as the All-Assam Minority Students' Union against the eviction drives would not change the government's policy to uproot illegal settlers. 'There will be more evictions if such organisations make noises,' he said.

Gopinath Munde united OBCs, but ensured others aren't sidelined: Fadnavis
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said that BJP stalwart late Gopinath Munde played a significant role in uniting Other Backward Classes (OBCs) while ensuring that no other section was sidelined. The chief minister was speaking after unveiling a statue of Munde in Latur district. Addressing a gathering on the occasion, he said, 'Today's politicians should learn from Munde. While he brought OBCs together, he also ensured that no other section was sidelined. He became the leader of all communities.' Fadnavis mentioned that Munde became the Maharashtra BJP president when he was just 35 years. Terming him a mass leader, Fadnavis said, 'Munde's stature was such that people rallied around him with unwavering commitment. It did not matter whether he was in power or not.' Fadnavis also recalled that Munde as the leader of opposition 'rocked the state legislative Assembly'. 'He took on the ruling parties fearlessly. And many in those days would spend sleepless nights fearing what he would expose about the government. Yet, Munde never crossed the limits. His personal equations with everybody across party lines were cordial,' Fadnavis said. 'I had closely seen and worked with Munde. Being much younger in the legislative Assembly, he would often assign me work. I learnt by watching Munde's strategy and strokes and style of speech on the floor of the House,' he added. When the first Shiv Sena-BJP government came to power in 1995, Munde became the home minister and introduced the stringent MCOCA to curb crimes. Munde was appointed as the Rural Development Minister by Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he assumed office in 2014. However, Munde died in a road accident in the early hours of June 3, 2014. Fadnavis said, 'In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Munde had given the slogan 'Narendra at Centre, Devendra in Maharashtra'. But I had then said, 'We were just lending Munde to the Centre for six months. After the Assembly polls, Munde would return to Maharashtra as CM'. But our wish remained unfulfilled.' The chief minister promised that Munde's dream of development in his drought-hit Marathwada region will be accomplished by the Mahayuti government. 'The government will divert 54 housand million cubic feet (TMC) of water that goes into the sea to the parched Marathwada region,', he said. 'Munde's dream of bringing railways to his home district Beed will be fulfilled. The coach factory in Latur will generate employment for 10,000 people once the production starts next year,' the chief minister added. Munde's daughter and cabinet minister Pankaja Munde, PWD minister Shivendraraje Bhosale, former NCP minister Dhananjay Munde were present at the event.

SC to hear challenge to talaq-e-hasan from November 19
The Supreme Court on Monday (August 11, 2025) agreed to hear from November 19 a batch of petitions challenging the practice of talaq-e-hasan as unconstitutional. Talaq-e-hasan is a form of divorce among Muslims through which a man can dissolve the marriage by pronouncing the word talaq once every month over a three-month period. A Bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi issued notice and sought the views of the National Commission for Women (NCW), National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR). The top court was hearing nine petitions, including the one filed by Ghaziabad resident Benazeer Heena, claiming to be aggrieved by the practice. They had also sought a direction to the Centre to frame the guidelines for gender- and religion-neutral and uniform grounds of divorce and procedure for all citizens. Under talaq-e-hasan, a divorce gets formalised after the third utterance of the word talaq in the third month if cohabitation has not resumed during this period. However, if cohabitation resumes after the first or second utterance of talaq, the parties are assumed to have reconciled.
