Don't compare Indian Muslims with Pakistani Muslims, says BJP MLA on Pahalgam terror attack
Speaking to ThePrint, he said Pakistan planned the attack as it wants to 'finish Kashmir's tourism by dividing the Valley with Hindu-Muslim tension'.
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh BJP leader Harshvardhan Bajpai, the MLA from Allahabad North seat, has appealed to people to not compare India's Muslims with Pakistan's, and hailed Kashmiris for helping the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack.
Bajpai's remark comes at a time when the Pahalgam terrorists' targeting of Hindu tourists has sparked communal backlash on social media.
Some statements have come even from within his party. 'Dharm poochha, jaati nahi… (the terrorists asked for the religion, not caste),' read a Chhattisgarh BJP post on X.
'One should not compare Indian Muslims with Pakistani's,' Bajpai told the media Friday. 'Kashmiri Muslims helped many Hindus during the incident. This is an attack on Kashmir's tourism. Local Kashmiris also condemned the attack by keeping a shutter down strike (hartal) in Srinagar the very next day.'
'My stand is very clear as I also understand geopolitics and international affairs. It is very clear that Pakistan has planned this attack. Their army general was also involved. They want to finish Kashmir's tourism by dividing the Valley with Hindu-Muslim communal tension. Their plan is very clear; we should understand this,' the MP told ThePrint.
Bajpai appealed to both Hindus and Muslims to stay united to derail Pakistan's plan. 'I heard that Kashmiri students are being targeted in several colleges and universities after the Pahalgam attack. This is shameful. We should not forget how a Kashmiri ponywallah helped so many tourists during the terror attack. Did he check religion while extending the help? It is true that those terrorists asked about religion, but not these Kashmiris. We should not target Kashmiris.'
Bajpai also claimed those targeting Kashmiris are actually harming Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts to bring peace to the Valley. 'Due to his efforts, voting percentage also increased in the recently held election as the public started showing faith in the government and democratic set up after the revocation of Article 370.'
Not his first contrasting view
This is not the first time Bajpai has expressed a view in contrast with the dominant belief within his party. He also opposed the Nazul Properties Bill in the Uttar Pradesh assembly in July 2024 and spoke against his own government. The bill prevents conversion of Nazul (owned by the government) land into private freehold.
Bajpai had said the law would negatively impact longstanding residents, including those in the slums of Prayagraj. He said it would lead to displacement of families who have lived on these lands since the British era.
The bill was eventually stalled in the Upper House and referred to a House select committee for wider discussions.
Hailing from UP's Prayagraj, the 44-year-old Bajpai is a second-term MLA from the Prayagraj North assembly segment. He Bajpai joined the BJP in 2016 after leaving the Bahujan Samaj Party where he unsuccessfully contested the 2007 and 2012 assembly polls.
His mother, Ranjana Bajpai, was also active in politics when she held a position as the women's wing chief in the Samajwadi Party between 2013 and 2017. His father, Ashok Bajpai, is a former Congress MLA (1980-1985) from the same seat.

Ludhiana West bypoll: Haryana CM rakes up water sharing dispute, AAP hits back
Ludhiana Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini launched a sharp attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, during his campaign in Ludhiana West, accusing it of betraying the teachings of the Sikh gurus by blocking drinking water to Haryana. Saini, who was here to campaign for party candidate Jiwan Gupta, said AAP is playing politics over the issues of water and farmers, instead of solving them. 'The AAP government refused to release Haryana's rightful share of drinking water from the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). Punjab is the land of the great Gurus who always taught that no one should be denied water. But today, this government is denying us drinking water. Haryana and Punjab are like brothers, why play politics in the name of water?' he questioned, terming AAP's opposition to sharing water as a betrayal of Punjab's spiritual values. Saini also claimed that the people of Punjab opposed AAP for stopping water to Haryana. The CM also accused AAP of misleading the public on farmers' issues. 'While the Haryana BJP government has provided minimum support price (MSP) for all crops and continues to support farmers with subsidies, the AAP government has used force and lathi charge against farmers. AAP only uses the name of farmers to gain sympathy but does nothing substantial for their welfare,' he said. The controversy erupted on April 28 when the Haryana government's demand for additional water from the Bhakra Dam was approved by the BBMB despite opposition from Punjab. The Punjab government refused to accept the decision and deployed police at Nangal dam, 13km downstream from Bhakra, to stop the additional water release. Later the matter reached the high court which disposed of the matter on May 26, while the fresh water sharing cycle started on May 21. Saini also hit out at AAP's anti-drug campaign, calling them a 'drama' meant to divert attention from the government's failures. 'These actions are more about grabbing headlines than actual results,' Saini said. Slamming both AAP and Congress, Saini said the people of Punjab were first let down by Congress and now by AAP. 'For five years, Congress fooled the people, and now, for the past three and a half years, AAP has done the same,' he said. The Haryana CM then drew comparisons between Punjab and Haryana in terms of central government scheme implementation. He said that under BJP rule, Haryana has successfully implemented schemes like Ayushman Bharat, PM Awas Yojana, PM Krishi Yojana, and Ujjwala Yojana. 'In contrast, these benefits are yet to reach the people of Punjab,' he added, urging the voters of Ludhiana West to give the BJP a chance. He said BJP's candidate Jiwan Gupta would win the bypoll as 'people are angry with both AAP and Congress and want change. They want good governance, and that is what BJP stands for.' No extra water to give: Bains Cabinet minister Harjot Singh Bains slammed the Haryana CM's remarks and said he pressured the BBMB to divert Punjab waters. 'It was a conspiracy to deprive Punjab of its rightful water share. Saini had pressured the BBMB to unfairly divert Punjab's water, and AAP exposed this,' Bains alleged. He further clarified that under previous governments, Punjab lacked proper canal irrigation coverage. 'However, under CM Bhagwant Mann, canal water has reached over 65% of Punjab's agricultural land and thus we have no extra water to give to other states,' Bains added. Embed Saini faces protest Ludhiana CM Nayab Singh Saini, who arrived in the city to campaign for the BJP candidate Jiwan Gupta, was met with a group of protesters who accused him of attempting to deprive Punjab of its rightful share of river water. The protesters raised slogans near Sherpur Chowk and alleged that Haryana was trying to usurp water allocated to Punjab, affecting the state's agriculture and groundwater levels. Saini, while mentioning the protests, claimed it to be stage managed by Congress and AAP. 'Congress and AAP jointly staged several protests against me in Haryana too and it is nothing more than a political gimmick. The people of Haryana have rejected Congress and AAP for their cheap political tactics,' Saini said.

BJD slams BJP for failing to ensure women's safety
Jajpur: The Biju Janata Dal on Friday accused the BJP of 'betraying' women by making false promises before the elections in 2024. The BJD held its public meeting 'Mahila Jana Jagaran' at Jajpur under the leadership of party's senior leader Pramila Mallik. She and party vice president Debi Prasad Mishra accused the BJP government of 'betraying' women. 'The BJP had promised to give Rs 50,000 to each woman in two years. However, now they are giving Rs 10,000 in two instalments in a year. What business a woman will do with capital of Rs 5,000', asked Mishra. Mallik alleged that the BJP has betrayed women because a beneficiary of Subhadra Yojana gets Rs 27 per day. 'How can Rs 27 a day help the women,' she asked and called it a 'complete betrayal' of women by the BJP after getting their votes. The BJD leaders alleged that women and girls are not safe in Odisha as there have been reports of sexual assaults on them. 'We demand re-introduction of Mahila and Sishu Desk in all police stations which helped the victims of sexual abuse in the State,' Mallik said, adding that a seven-point proposal was unanimously adopted by the women at the meeting. The BJD leaders also alleged that the State's BJP government has destroyed the economic independence of 70 lakh women in the State. Besides, the State government has also 'failed' to control the prices of essential goods, provide systematic 'darshan' in temples, maintain Odia pride and purchase paddy from farmers. The BJD meeting passed a political resolution on implementation of the 33 per cent reservation for women in Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the 2029 polls according to the Nari Shakti Vandhan Act passed by Parliament.

BJP respects nari shakti, says Majhi
Cuttack: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said 'respecting women is a fundamental principle of our (BJP) political training.' Majhi, along with his two deputy chief ministers, K V Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, attended the 'Nari Shakti Samabesh' in Cuttack and came down heavily on the previous BJD government. Claiming that respecting women was the fundamental training of the saffron outfit, Majhi said his government immediately after taking the oath of office on June 12 last year took four major decisions including launching of Subhadra Yojana for women's empowerment. 'The primary goal of Nari Shakti Samabesh is to strengthen and elevate Odisha's women as the State's greatest asset,' Majhi said. He claimed that Subhadra Yojana is Odisha's largest-ever women's welfare programme and a social welfare scheme that aims to empower women financially by connecting with every village and family, even in remote tribal areas. The Chief Minister also claimed that his government was working to boost the economic condition of women through Self-Help Groups (SHGs). 'The women are using the assistance availed under Subhadra Yojana for businesses and farming. The SHGs have received Rs 3,695 crore in business and Rs 300 crore in interest refunds,' Majhi said. He claimed that Odisha has made a record by creating over 16 lakh 'Lakhpati Didis'. While felicitating some Lakhpati Didis at the meeting, Majhi said his government has set a target to create one crore 'Lakhpati Didis' in the coming years. He said more budget allocations have been made for women and children in the State. Majhi said as much as Rs 89,861 crore has been allocated in the 2025-26 budget for women-centric schemes like Chief Minister's Sampurna Pushti Yojana (MSPY). 'Odisha is a model State in women's empowerment and the State will serve as an inspiration for others,' he said. Parvati Parida said the BJP government holding 'Nari Shakti Samabesh', on the very first day of its second year in office, symbolises both respect for women and a renewed commitment to building an equitable and progressive Odisha.
