He noted that digital transformation, supported by China, Japan, and South Korea, could contribute US$2 trillion to regional GDP.
Speaking at the 26th ASEAN Plus Three Foreign Ministers' Meeting, Mohamad emphasised Malaysia's goal as ASEAN Chair to bridge development gaps and promote sustainable growth.
'Such initiatives support equitable development, foster peace through cooperation, and improve living standards,' he said.
The APT bloc, with a combined population of 2.28 billion and a GDP of US$29.33 trillion, holds significant global influence.
Mohamad stressed the partnership's responsibility in ensuring regional stability and inclusive growth.
'Amid complex global challenges, platforms advocating dialogue and cooperation remain vital,' he added.
The minister also welcomed recent developments, including the Rapid Financing Facility under the Chiang Mai Initiative and progress in electric vehicle ecosystems.

'By combining our resources, the halal sector would be a natural area for increased partnership between Dhaka and Putrajaya,' the Bangladesh Government's Chief Adviser Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus said in an exclusive interview with Bernama at the end of this three-day official visit to Malaysia. He was here on the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim between Aug 11 and 13. He noted that Malaysia's expertise in halal certification and branding and Bangladesh's abundant land, labour and facilities would be a potent combination to scale up production. 'This positions both countries well to meet the demand for halal products in international markets,' he said. The interview was led by Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, together with Editor of International News Service Voon Miaw Ping and Assistant Editor of Bernama Economic Service Kisho Kumari Sucedaram. Yunus said the halal market is not confined to Bangladesh or Malaysia, but constitutes the global market, alluding to the consumer base for halal products based on the two billion Muslim population globally. According to Future Market Insights Inc.'s projections, the global halal food market is expected to grow from US$1.5 trillion in 2025 to US$3.8 trillion by 2035.

Bursa Malaysia opens little changed on Friday ahead of GDP data, flat trading on Wall St
KUALA LUMPUR: Investors on Bursa Malaysia held their positions on Friday as the flattish performance on US markets overnight gave little indication on trading direction. The local bourse entered profit-taking mode yesterday as investors cashed in on a seven-day winning streak, but remained little moved at Friday's opening, ahead of Malaysia's economic report due out at noon. Traders snapped up equities over the past two weeks as risk appetite was buoyed by the continuation of US-China trade talks and investors' surging hopes for a US rate cut after a lower-than-expected inflation report. Throwing a spannar in the works, however, was the US producer's price index for July, which showed a 0.9% increase - above the 0.2% forecast by economists - which pointed to rising inflation. As at 9.10am, domestic traders remained uncertain in the absence of trading direction. The FBM KLCI was down 0.45 points to 1,580.6 while the broader market had a nearly even spread of advancers and decliners. "The local benchmark index is expected to extend its profit-taking consolidation phase, as market sentiment should remain subdued while investors await crucial domestic and U.S. data releases ahead of the weekend," said TA Securities in its daily review. Meanwhile, Rakuten Trade said in a note that foreign funds remained net sellers of local equities, which serves as a market dampener. "For today, we expect the index to hover between the 1,575-1,585 range," it added. In early trading, PETRONAS Chemicals dropped seven sne to RM3.57 while PPB shed seven sen to RM8.94 and IOI fell four sen to RM3.81. Nestle gained 26 sen to RM88.06, while PETRONAS Gas rose six sen to RM18.76 and MISC added five sen to RM7.81. Leading actives included TWL flat at 2.5 sen, Oxford Innotech up 0.5 sen to 41.5 sen and Oriental Kopi dipping one sen to 97.5 sen.

National Guard troops fully deployed in Washington for Trump-ordered security mission, says Pentagon
WASHINGTON, Aug 15 — All 800 National Guard troops who were ordered to the US capital Washington to aid law enforcement personnel by President Donald Trump have now been mobilised, the Pentagon said Thursday. Trump ordered the deployment — which follows a similar move during protests in Los Angeles in June — as part of what he billed as a crackdown on crime in Washington, where violent offences are in fact down. 'As of today, all 800 Army and Air National Guardsmen are mobilised... as part of Joint Task Force DC, and they are now here in our capital,' Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson told journalists. They 'will assist the DC Metropolitan Police Department and federal law enforcement partners with monument security, community safety patrols, protecting federal facilities and officers' and traffic control posts, Wilson said. The troops 'will remain until law and order has been restored in the District, as determined by the president,' she added. The US Army later said the National Guard's initial mission 'is to provide a visible presence in key public areas, serving as a visible crime deterrent.' 'They will not arrest, search, or direct law enforcement,' but they 'have the authority to temporarily detain individuals to prevent imminent harm,' the Army said in a statement. The troops will be equipped with protective gear, it added, saying that weapons would be available if needed but would remain in the armory. Trump announced the National Guard deployment — along with a federal takeover of the city's police department — on Monday, vowing 'to take our capital back.' The overwhelmingly Democratic US capital faces allegations from Republican politicians that it is overrun by crime, plagued by homelessness and financially mismanaged. However, data from Washington police shows significant drops in violent crime between 2023 and 2024, although that was coming off the back of a post-pandemic surge. The deployment of troops in Washington comes after Trump dispatched the National Guard and Marines to quell unrest in Los Angeles, California, that was spurred by immigration enforcement raids. It was the first time since 1965 that a US president deployed the National Guard against the wishes of a state governor. Most National Guard forces answer to state governors and have to be 'federalized' to be brought under presidential control, but in Washington these troops already report only to the US president. — AFP
