Siddaramaiah asks Gadkari to reschedule foundation laying ceremony for Shivamogga National Highway project
He said that he was not consulted before the finalisation of the project's dedication and foundation ceremony on July 14, despite his name being included in the draft invitation card.
'I have not been intimated about this programme in advance, and an inauguration programme of various developmental schemes is already scheduled under my Chairmanship in Indi Taluka, Vijyapura District on the same day,' Siddaramaiah said in a letter.
Asking Gadkari to instruct his department to coordinate while organising such events, the CM said that it would have been 'appropriate' for the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to have consulted with the Karnataka government before scheduling the state-level programs.
'It would have been more appropriate for MoRTH to have consulted with the State Government before scheduling the State Level programmes. Therefore, I request you to instruct the department to coordinate with the state government while organising such programmes. Also, I request you to postpone this programme and provide me a couple of dates convenient to you, so that I would be able to join you in this significant state-level programme,' the letter read.
This comes as the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, along with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), was organising a 'Dedication to Nation and Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony' program on July 14 at Nehru Field in Shimoga district.
Earlier, the NHAI further strengthened its policy to immediately report and blacklist 'loose FASTags', commonly known as 'tag-in-hand', to ensure smooth tolling operations, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways said in a release.
With the move, the authority has further streamlined its policy for the Toll Collecting Agencies and Concessionaires to immediately report 'loose FASTags'.
In view of upcoming initiatives like the Annual Pass System and Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling, it is critical to address this issue to ensure FASTag authenticity and system reliability, the release stated.
FASTags are sometimes deliberately not fixed on the windscreen of the vehicle by the owners. Such practices pose operational challenges leading to lane congestion, generation of false chargebacks, misuse in closed loop tolling system, causing overall disruption of the Electronic Toll Collection framework, resulting in unnecessary delays at toll plazas and inconvenience to other National Highway users, it highlighted.
To ensure timely corrective measures, NHAI has provided a dedicated email ID and has directed the Toll Collection Agencies and Concessionaires to immediately report such FASTags.Based on the reports received, NHAI will take immediate action to initiate blacklisting/hotlisting of the reported FASTags. Deputy Commissioner, Kullu, Torul S Raveesh, on Friday said: 'A memorandum was handed over and we will be forwarding the same to the government.' MLA defends project, terms protest politically motivated MLA of Kullu, Sunder Singh Thakur said, 'Those against development are opposing the project in garb of the devta's order and the project is politically motivated.' Lashing out at the BJP for 'double speak', Thakur said, 'In the 2022 assembly elections, when former MP and former MLA Maheshwar Singh campaigned by putting up posters for the construction of Bijli Mahadev ropeway, no one opposed it at that time and today they are opposing it, this is their hypocrisy'. Bijli Mahadev is a famous pilgrimage site in Kullu district. It is a Union government project under the Parvatmala Yojana, also known as the National Ropeways Development Programme — designed to offer a sustainable and efficient alternative to traditional road transport in hilly areas. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has laid the foundation stone of the ropeway project for Bijli Mahadev in March 2024. The residents of Kharal valley, which lies at the foothills of the Bijli Mahadev temple have been holding agitations against the ropeway project. The residents say that the 2.4-km-long ropeway project would destroy the hill of Bijli Mahadev, pointing towards the cracking up at several places. The protesters gathered at Ramshila in Kullu and walked till Dhalpur ground where they raised slogans against the project, where heavy deployment of police was done. 'Devta is against the project and we are here to demand scrapping of the project. Development cannot be at the cost of the faith', said 75-year-old Deena Ram. 'Bijli Mahadev is a centre of religious faith and commercial centre should not be built there. Keeping in mind the faith of local people, it should be canceled,' said Devika Rani, 65, a local. The president of Devbhoomi Jagran Manch, Kshitij Sood, said, 'Devbani is supreme in Devbhoomi Kullu and the deity is repeatedly opposing the construction so this ropeway should be cancelled'. President of BMRSS, Suresh Negi, said, 'People are on the streets against the ropeway project as the devta is against the same. The project is coming up against the orders of the devta.' Former president of Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC), Kullu, Ram Singh said, 'People and organizations associated with Dev Samaj will have to come together. He also warned the president of Kardar Sangh to respect the people associated with Dev Samaj and join them in their campaign. I will take your voice to Delhi'. Vinender Singh Jamwal, caretaker of Bijli Mahadev temple said, 'We have a special request to the central government, Prime Minister and Nitin Gadkari that they should cancel this ropeway and follow the order of the deity and respect the public feelings of the people here'.

Congress finalises heads of 22 govt.-owned boards, corporations
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D.K. Shivakumar have reportedly finalised the names of 22 legislators and party leaders for the posts of chairperson of the government-owned boards and corporations. The names were finalised after a meeting with AICC general secretary in charge of Karnataka Randeep Singh Surjewala in Delhi on Thursday night. The list will be made public after a couple of days, party sources said. Equal preference Meanwhile, sources said both party MLAs and leaders had been given equal preference in the appointments. After Mr. Surjewala's meetings with Ministers and MLAs in Bengaluru, sources said the names suggested by Ministers/legislators had been given priority in the appointments. Till now, the government has appointed 42 legislators as chairpersons of various boards and corporations. However, directors and members of boards/corporations have not yet been appointed. Following the AICC general secretary's meeting with legislators, the government released ₹50 crore to each MLA for undertaking development works in their respective constituencies. Council seats Sources said candidates for the four vacant seats in the Karnataka Legislative Council had also not been finalised. The names would be finalised after senior leader Rahul Gandhi vets the list in August. Earlier in Delhi, Mr. Siddaramaiah participated in the 'Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan' of the other backward classes. Party leaders, including AICC chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Mr. Gandhi, K.C. Venugopal, and Anil Jaihind, participated in it.

Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan: When the oppressed unite, history bends towards justice, says K'taka CM Siddaramaiah
Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, while participating in the Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan, called for unity among backward classes, stating that when the oppressed unite, history bends towards justice. Addressing the gathering in Delhi at the Talkatora Stadium, CM Siddaramaiah said, "I call upon every OBC leader, every grassroots worker, every believer in the Constitution to, as stated by Baba Saheb Ambedkar, to educate, agitate, organise and rise. The time for waiting is over. We should build a republic where justice is not delayed, representation is not denied, and dignity is not conditional." That is the India we owe to our children, CM Siddaramaiah underlined. "Let this be the beginning of a new chapter. When the oppressed unite, history bends towards justice. When we organise, we do not just fight for our rights, we fight for the soul of India. Our dreams must be different. We must build an India where birth does not define destiny, where 'Utpadak Varg' are not forgotten, but honoured, and where justice is not delayed by design, but delivered by Constitutional Democracy," he said. "To understand the urgency of Nyay, we must confront an uncomfortable truth: India's social order was not built on justice, but was built on exclusion," he noted. The very people who built this nation through their labour, the 'Utpadak Varg', most of them from backward classes, were denied learning, land, and leadership. The hands that domesticated the animals crafted the goods, cultivated the lands, and sustained the society were chained by birth. The minds that could have imagined, governed, and led were locked out of schools, scriptures, and seats of power, he stated. This was no accident. It was a design carefully maintained by the 'Sangrahak Varg', who preserved their hold over knowledge, wealth, and privilege by declaring entire communities as unworthy, by following the inhuman principles of Manusmriti, CM Siddaramaiah stated. This caste-driven inequality is not just economic but also a socially structured violence. For centuries, millions of children never saw a classroom, not because they lacked talent, but because the system deemed them invisible, the CM said. Even today, we hear of 'merit' as if it were born in a vacuum. What chance does the child of a laundry worker have against the son of an upper-caste landlord or a crony capitalist? The game was rigged before it began, CM Siddaramaiah questioned. The BJP-RSS ideology doesn't seek to dismantle this system, instead it seeks to sanctify it. Their dream is a hierarchy where silence is loyalty and injustice is tradition, he said. The RSS-BJP's Manuvadi worldview is 'Social Darwinism' in disguise, where only the dominant deserve dignity. But our Constitution promises not survival of the fittest, but justice for the weakest. "Hence, I call for the protection of our Constitution. Only through the protection of the Constitution can we realise true social justice and equity. In independent India, our Constitution is our Dharma, it alone shields us from the cruel clutches of Manu Dharma," CM Siddaramaiah stated. He recalled that after the Supreme Court struck down caste-based reservations in State of Madras vs. Champakam Dorairajan (1951), Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, despite opposition, responded with India's First Constitutional Amendment enshrining Article 15(4) to safeguard reservations for OBCs, SCs, and STs. The Mandal Commission, formed in 1979, revealed that over 52 per cent of India were OBCs. When its recommendations were implemented in 1990, the RSS and BJP opposed it with venom, abetting riots and over 200 suicides. But the Congress government under P.V. Narasimha Rao stood firm and implemented 27 per cent reservation, showing courage in the face of cruelty, the CM said. 'Rajiv Gandhi, through the 73rd and 74th Amendments, brought backward class representation into rural and urban local bodies. Under Smt. Sonia Gandhi ji and Dr Manmohan Singh ji, the 93rd Amendment ensured 27 per cent reservation in higher education. Congress created the National Commission for Backward Classes in 1993, giving institutional voice to millions,' he stated. "I support a nationwide caste census, political reservation, proportionate which is 75 per cent representation, educational empowerment, economic opportunities, and social awareness as essential pillars for the upliftment of our backward classes," he added.
