Kiru hydropower corruption case: CBI files chargesheet against former J-K governor Satyapal Malik
The agency has submitted its findings after three years of probe before a special court naming Malik and five others as accused.
New Delhi, May 22 (PTI) The CBI has filed a chargesheet against former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satyapal Malik and five others in connection with alleged corruption in the award of Rs 2,200-crore civil works for Kiru hydropower project, officials said Thursday.
The former governor said he was getting calls from many well-wishers which he was unable to take.
The CBI had conducted searches at the premises of Malik and others in connection with the case in February last year.
In a statement after the registration of the FIR in 2022, the CBI had said the case pertains to the alleged malpractices in the award of the contract worth about Rs 2,200 crore of civil works of the Kiru Hydro Electric Power (HEP) Project to a private company in 2019.
Malik, who was the governor of Jammu and Kashmir from August 23, 2018 to October 30, 2019, had claimed that he was offered a Rs 300-crore bribe for clearing two files, including the one pertaining to the project.
He had denied allegations of corruption against him after the agency conducted search operation last year.
Malik said his residence was raided by the CBI instead of investigating the people he had complained about and who were involved in corruption.
'They will not get anything except 4-5 kurtas and pyjamas. The dictator is trying to scare me by misusing government agencies. I am a farmer's son, I will neither be afraid nor bow down,' he had posted online.
The central agency has booked Navin Kumar Choudhary, the then chairman of the Chenab Valley Power Projects Private Limited (CVPPPL), and other officials including M S Babu, M K Mittal and Arun Kumar Mishra, besides construction firm Patel Engineering Limited.
'Though a decision was taken in the 47th board meeting of CVPPPL for re-tender through e-tendering with a reverse auction after the cancellation of the ongoing tendering process, the same was not implemented (according to the decision taken in the 48th board meeting) and the tender was finally awarded to Patel Engineering Limited,' the FIR has alleged. India-US trade talks delayed ahead of August 25, THESE sectors remain the sticking point
Amid the postponement of bilateral trade talks scheduled for August 25, the US is advocating for increased market access in sensitive sectors, such as agriculture and dairy. This greater access has been denied by India, as it threatens the livelihoods of small and marginal farmers. India has affirmed that it will not hamper the interests of farmers and cattle rearers, news agency PTI reported. The US team was initially set to visit India on August 25 for the next round of negotiations on the proposed bilateral trade agreement, but the visit is likely to be delayed to a later date. Five rounds of talks on the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) have been completed so far, with a US team scheduled to visit India for the sixth round. The talks were scheduled to be conducted from August 25-29. "This visit is likely to be rescheduled," PTI quoted an official, who did not wish to be named. The postponement of trade talks becomes more important as the US has announced a whopping 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods. The US and India have announced plans to finish the first phase of bilateral trade talks by September-October of this year. They aim to more than double their bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030, up from the current USD 191 billion. The 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods exported to the US took effect on August 7. An additional 25 per cent tariff, announced as a penalty for India purchasing crude oil and military equipment from Russia, will be implemented from August 27 onwards. According to commerce ministry data, the country's exports to the US increased 21.64 per cent to USD 33.53 billion during April-July, while imports rose 12.33 per cent to USD 17.41 billion. The US was India's largest trading partner in the April-July period of the current fiscal year, with $12.56 billion in bilateral trade. India's exports to America have been recording positive growth since April this year.
