Kota Kinabalu: The unity of the diverse races and religions in Sabah is the key to the State's strength and prosperity, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He urged all citizens to continue preserving the harmony enjoyed today as the most valuable legacy for future generations. 'Unity in diversity is Sabah's true strength. It is not a weakness, rather it is a uniqueness that we should be proud of and safeguard,' he said when launching the National Month, Sabah Day and Fly the Flag Campaign 2025 at The Magellan Sutera Resort, here, Friday. The Chief Minister said every individual is responsible for making places like schools, workplaces, business premises, places of worship and digital platforms to strengthen understanding, rather than sowing division. On the progress of Sabah's development, he said the achievements of the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 1.0 as of May 2025 showed encouraging success, with an average implementation rate reaching 94 per cent of the 467 initiatives planned. 'Among sectors that continue to be prioritised are agriculture, industry and tourism, along with efforts to enhance human capital, the peoples' wellbeing, infrastructure networks and environmental sustainability,' he said. Hajiji said various forms of assistance have also been provided to the people, including access to education and introducing the Sabah People's Protection Insurance Scheme that offers comprehensive benefits to citizens. He also urged all segments of society to fly the Jalur Gemilang everywhere, as a symbol of loyalty and love for the nation. 'Today's launch is not just a symbolic event, but a call for us to understand the true meaning of independence - not just freedom from colonisation, but also freedom from poverty and division,' he said. The National Day and Sabah Day celebration, held every August, is a historic moment that reminds the people of the struggle of their forefathers in defending the homeland and the dignity of the nation. 'As Malaysians in Sabah, we have a great responsibility to safeguard the blessings of independence and continue this legacy of struggle,' said Hajiji. The launching event was marked by the handing over of Jalur Gemilang and Sabah flags to State and Federal Government departments and agencies, representatives of associations and the launch of the Merdeka Jalur Gemilang Expedition. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ukraine's drone attack sparks fires in Rostov region, Russia says

(Reuters) -An overnight Ukrainian drone attack sparked several fires, including at a power substation, in the southern Russian region of Rostov, the acting regional governor said on Tuesday. There were no injuries as a result of the attack and the fire at the substation on an area of about 500 square metres (5,400 square feet) has been extinguished, Rostov's acting governor, Yuri Slyusar, said on the Telegram messaging app. Russia's defence units destroyed a total of 24 Ukrainian drones overnight, including seven over the Rostov region, which has been a frequent target of Ukraine's strikes, Russia's defence ministry said on Telegram. The ministry reports only the number of downed drones, not how many Ukraine launched. Reuters could not independently verify the reports, and there was no immediate comment from Kyiv. Ukraine has frequently said its attacks inside Russia are aimed at destroying infrastructure key to Moscow's war efforts and are in response to Russia's continued strikes on Ukraine. Two children among injured in Russia's overnight attack on Kharkiv region, Ukraine says

(Reuters) -Two children were among several people injured in Russia's largest air attack on the Ukrainian town of Lozova since the war began, the head of the local administration said on Tuesday. "Critical infrastructure, apartment buildings and private homes have been damaged," Serhiy Zelenskiy, the head of the city's council, said on the Telegram messaging app. "Lozova has endured the largest attack since the beginning of the war," he said, adding several people including two children were wounded in the town in the eastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv. The scale of the attack on the town, which had a pre-war population of about 55,000, was not immediately clear. Reuters could not independently verify Zelenskiy's report. There was no immediate comment from Russia. Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war that Russia launched with a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The Kharkiv region, which lies near the border with Russia, has been the target of regular Russian drone and missile attacks since the start of the war. Parts of Lozova, a town in the southern parts of the Kharkiv region, were left without power and water supply, Zelenskiy said. "We will persevere!" he added. Youth council, leaders slam Warisan's 'unrealistic' student Loan write-off pledge

Published on: Tuesday, August 05, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 05, 2025 By: FMT Text Size: Warisan President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal PETALING JAYA: Warisan's promise to cancel all outstanding student loans for Sabahans if it wins the state election has been dismissed as unrealistic by the Sabah Youth Council and several political leaders. Council president Abqaree Fawwaz Abekan said the move would impose huge financial burdens and affect other sectors, suggesting instead a 50pc subsidy for needy borrowers. Kunak assemblywoman Norazlinah Arif and Apas' Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan accused Warisan of making grand, populist promises to gain power, noting that no such debts were forgiven during Shafie Apdal's tenure as chief minister. Shafie made the pledge, along with free education, at an event in Sabah on Saturday. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
