‘Back to the Future' turns 40 — and the first actor to play Marty McFly was fired: ‘It was devastating'

New York Post03-07-2025
Forty years ago, moviegoers were almost shouting, 'Great Stoltz!'
That's because 'Back to the Future,' the science-fiction classic that hit theaters on July 3, 1985, nearly starred a very different actor than Michael J. Fox.
The poor guy even shot scenes.

5 Eric Stoltz was the first actor to play Marty McFly in 'Back to the Future' before being fired and replaced with Michael J. Fox.
Paramount Pictures
The first man to don the orange puffer vest as unwitting teen time traveler Marty McFly was Eric Stoltz, then the star of 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High,' 'The Wild Life' and 'The New Kids.'
But he was ultimately denied the keys to the DeLorean.

'The director fired me,' Stoltz, now 63, said in a 1993 interview with Bob Costas. 'He didn't like my work.'
The stung actor added, 'It was devastating to me.'
From the offset, director Robert Zemeckis, who had notched a hit in 'Romancing the Stone' with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, and producer Steven Spielberg craved Fox for the part.
The 23-year-old had turned into a huge national TV star playing precocious Alex P. Keaton on the NBC sitcom 'Family Ties,' which began in 1982. By 1985, it was No. 2 in the Nielsen ratings.

He was made for Marty.
But when 'Ties' creator and showrunner Gary David Goldberg was approached by Spielberg and Zemeckis about Fox doing the film, the TV bigwig was firm.

'He said, 'I can't let him do it,'' Fox recalled in a 2001 interview with the Archive of American Television.

'And he said, you know, 'Please don't tell Michael — not that I want him to think I did something behind his back, but I really had no other choice.''
So, the Hollywood duo instead went with another 23-year-old — Stoltz.
But, talented though he was, the actor struggled with the funny Californian for more than a month of production.
'Eric had such an intensity. He saw drama in things. He wasn't really a comedian, and they needed a comedian,' co-star Lea Thompson said in the book 'We Don't Need Roads: The Making of the Back to the Future Trilogy.'
'He's super-funny in real life, but he didn't approach his work like that, and they really needed somebody who had those chops.'

Fox diplomatically agrees.
'There's a certain goofiness to [Marty] that I don't think Eric was really ready to embrace,' he said in 2001.

'I think there was a silliness to the role that they kind of pictured me for.'
Concerned with 'Future''s future, Zemeckis and Spielberg went back to Goldberg, who finally agreed to let his superstar do the project.
Now the bad new had to be broken to Stoltz.
On Jan. 10, 1985, Zemeckis axed his leading man.

'I was a young actor,' Stoltz recalled to Costas. 'It was probably the worst thing that can happen to you in your career.'
In a later interview with George Stephanopolous, the 'Forrest Gump' director felt mutually horrible. He also called the sacking 'the worst experience of my career.'
'Eric is a brilliant actor,' Zemeckis added.
'I simply miscast him and I learned a very serious lesson. It's not worth it. It's too painful for everybody. What you have to do is cast the movie the right way and feel really right about it.'

So, Fox was ready to team up with Christopher Lloyd's Doc Brown to battle with Biff.
But stepping in just a few months before release wasn't so simple.
The shift added an estimated $3 to $4 million to the movie's budget. And Fox had to continue filming 'Family Ties' at the same time.

'Within a week, I was doing both jobs,' Fox said. 'I would do 'Family Ties' in the daytime and I'd do 'Back to the Future' at night. And I was working 18, 19, 20 hours.'
He added: 'By the time 'Back to the Future' came out in the summer of '85, there were whole scenes I can't remember shooting because I was so tired during so much of it.'
The long, hard days paid off.
What was hardly a surefire hit when filming began became a phenomenon, grossing $385 million worldwide, led to two more movies and even inspired a Broadway musical.
5 Stoltz has enjoyed a long career in Hollywood since the dustup.

Stoltz's Hollywood career wasn't over either.
He received a 1986 Golden Globe nomination for director Peter Bogdanovich's movie 'Mask.'
And he's appeared in films such as 'Pulp Fiction,' 'Jerry Maguire' and 'The Butterfly Effect,' and on TV series including 'Grey's Anatomy' and 'Madam Secretary.' Stoltz is also a prolific television director.
And since that tough experience, Fox and Stoltz have become unlikely pals.
'It was a wonderful actor — great actor — who since has become a friend of mine and someone I've had a good time with, talking about this turn in our lives and how we both ended up in different places,' Fox said during a 2025 'Back to the Future' panel at the Calgary Expo.
'I've learned a lot about acceptance and perseverance from him. He's a great guy, Eric Stoltz.'

The Jonas Brothers' Kids: All About Nick, Kevin, & Joe's Families

The Jonas Brothers are celebrating 20 years as a professional band in 2025, and they aren't slowing down even a little bit. They just kicked off their Jonas20: Greetings from Your Hometown Tour and are the inaugural guests on Songs & Stories with Kelly Clarkson, a new four-episode-long NBC special hosted by Clarkson in which she sings and has candid discussions with popular artists about their careers. RELATED: Joe, Nick, and Kevin Jonas have been around the career block, both as a band and solo artists. They've toured the globe multiple times, released seven albums as the Jonas Brothers, and have appeared as themselves in countless film and television projects. (Nick also acts!) Even with their multitude of pursuits, in 2025, it's safe to say they're all firmly committed to their parenting chapters too, as each brother has officially added 'dad' to their list of responsibilities. Read more about the Jonas Brothers' families, below: Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra In December 2018, Nick married actress Priyanka Chopra at the Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur. And since then, professionally, the pair collaborate regularly on projects as producers and performers. However, their greatest collaboration came in 2022 with the birth of their daughter Malti Marie Chopra Jonas via surrogate. In a recent episode of Mythic Kitchen with the three brothers, Nick told host Chef Josh Scherer that having a child has made him more focused on building something his daughter will be proud of. RELATED: 'You're met with this reality that this little human being will depend on you at least until they're 18, hopefully, for the rest of their life. And that responsibility is a profound thing,' he explained. 'Prior to that, I think I was just focused on sort of benchmarks of success, or perceived benchmarks of success. And now I have a more tangible thing to base my decision-making off of. And everything is better too once you are doing it for that reason and you get to experience life again through the eyes of a child." Joe Jonas Joe Jonas shares two daughters with ex Sophie Turner, Willa and Delphine. On the Jonas Brothers episode of Amy Poehler's podcast Good Hang, Joe said he's gotten to really understand how hard his own mom had it parenting four boys. 'Boys are so different than girls,' he said. 'I'll watch my kids on the playground and it's, like, delicate. And then this kid will be like, 'Ahh!' And dive off the top of the slide. And you're just like, 'That is a boy.'" Kevin Jonas and Danielle Deleasa This December, Kevin and Danielle celebrate 16 years of marriage. Kevin was the first of the trio to tie the knot. They have put down roots in the Jonas' birth state of New Jersey, where they live with their two young daughters, Alena Rose and Valentina Angelina. Kevin was also the first of the brothers to become a dad. He and Danielle have released two children's books together, There's a Rock Concert in My Bedroom and There's a Beach in My Bedroom; the former was inspired by their daughters. "Now our daughters, Alena and Valentina, enrich our lives in ways we could have never anticipated," Kevin told People in September 2021. "The love and care they show each other on a daily basis inspired this story and we are so proud to share how these girls not only uplift us and each other, but are creative, caring rock stars in their own right." Songs & Stories With Kelly Clarkson premieres August 19 at 10/9c on NBC. Subsequent one-hour episodes air August 26, September 2, and September 9 on NBC. All four episodes will be available to stream on Peacock the day after they air. Solve the daily Crossword

Susan Collins to get Hollywood treatment at fundraiser with Democrats

The fundraiser will be held at the home of Sherry Lansing, a former Paramount Pictures chair and prominent liberal donor, according to three people with knowledge of the fundraiser. Lansing's home in the Bel Air neighborhood is a mainstay on the philanthropy and Democratic fundraising circuit, hosting the likes of Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis of California on her patio, which opens to sweeping views of Los Angeles. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Lansing is set to co-host the event with Casey Wasserman, the sports and entertainment mogul and chair of the Los Angeles Olympics organizing committee, which is handling logistics for the Summer Games in 2028. Wasserman is a longtime Democratic giver as well, but he has taken steps to ingratiate himself with the right as of late, giving Olympic medals to President Donald Trump at the White House this month and donating to some Republicans during this election cycle. Advertisement Casey Wasserman, chairman of LA28, presented medals from the 1984 Olympics to President Trump in Washington on Aug. 5. Alex Brandon/Associated Press The Bel Air event has attracted some attention in Hollywood because Democrats will need to topple Republicans such as Collins if they have a chance at retaking the Senate. It is unclear how strong a candidate Democrats will field in Maine. On Tuesday, a political novice, Graham Platner, announced his entry into the Democratic primary. Advertisement Wasserman and Lansing decided to participate in the Southern California fundraiser because it was set up as a bipartisan host committee, with two Democrats and two Republicans, according to a person close to them. One of the Republicans is Harry E. Sloan, a former chair of MGM and a current member of the Lionsgate board. Sloan was once a prominent backer of moderate Republicans such as John McCain, but in recent years he has also made six-figure contributions to Democrats, including to back the 2024 presidential campaigns of Joe Biden and then Kamala Harris. Sloan's wife, Florence, a filmmaker with similar giving patterns to her husband, is also listed on the invitation. The other Republican hosting the event is Michael Burns, vice chair of the Lionsgate film and television studio. 'I'm proud to have supported my dear friend Senator Collins for many years,' Burns said in a text message. 'She remains a clear-thinking, bipartisan moderate in a world that, at least for the moment, is something far different.' Lansing, Wasserman and Sloan did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Collins' campaign had no comment. Tickets for the reception run from $3,500 to $10,000. Collins is also expected to attend finance events in Northern California around the time of the Bel Air fundraiser, according to a person with knowledge of the matter. Kelly Clarkson Returns to Instagram 12 Days After Ex's Death

Kelly Clarkson Returns to Instagram 12 Days After Ex's Death originally appeared on Parade. Kelly Clarkson returned to Instagram — unofficially — on Aug. 19. She — or someone on her team — took to her Instagram Stories to share a promo for a new series that will begin airing tonight. "Tonight's the night," read a message added to the promo. This is the first time that Clarkson's social media has been active since the tragic death of her ex-husband — and the father of her two children — Brandon Blackstock. Clarkson will be back on television for a new special called Songs & Stories. The premiere episode of the pre-recorded four part series will air on Aug. 19 on NBC. The show will also be available for streaming the next day on Peacock. The television special was inspired by Clarkson's talk show segment by the same name. View this post on Instagram A post shared by NBC Entertainment (@nbc) "Every song's got a story, and this special gives us a chance to hear what's behind the music straight from the artists who lived it. Getting to share the stage with them and hear about the moments that shaped their paths — and where they're headed next — is pretty special,' Clarkson said in a press release ahead of the premiere. Each week, Clarkson will interview an artist and then she will perform with them. The Jonas Brothers will join Clarkson on Tuesday night's premiere. In the upcoming three weeks, Clarkson will chat with Gloria Estefan (Aug. 26), Teddy Swims (Sept. 2), and Lizzo (Sept. 9). "From chart-toppers to personal stories, the Jonas Brothers are kicking off #NBCSongsAndStories with Kelly Clarkson," read the caption of a post uploaded to the official NBC Instagram page. Overall, fans seem excited for the series. "Yassssss can't wait!!!" one person commented on NBC's promo post. "This is going to be great," someone else said. "Not going to miss this," a third comment read. Since the series was pre-recorded, it's unlikely that Clarkson will discuss anything that's happened in her personal life over the past two weeks.
