Reaction as Brighton claim first-ever WSL win over Arsenal

BBC News05-05-2025

Brighton claimed a maiden Women's Super League win over Arsenal at the 14th attempt on Monday evening, running out 4-2 winners over the Champions League finalists in their final home game of the season. Here's what both managers said after the game:Brighton boss Dario Vidosic: "We had to be brave, we had to be tough, we had to be resilient together today to have a chance. We were fantastic. The effort was rewarded."Sometimes you have to look away from the table and focus on the process. We want to work hard, be tough to play against and today we found our moments. We made it difficult for a world class team."On goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley's performance: "We know the quality she has. We are fortunate to have quality goalkeepers. That was Baggas' chance. She has been staying ready. To be called in less than 10 minutes before kick-off, she was phenomenal."Arsenal boss Renee Slegers: "We conceded nine goals in the last two WSL games and we just said as a team we don't think it's acceptable. We don't want this to happen. There are different reasons. The Villa game was a different game. We need to learn two very tough lessons coming off a big success. We have to learn. We have to find solutions and move forward."On if the Champions League final is a distraction: "It's intense for the players with where we came from and what's ahead of us. We have to be in the moment. I will be working until late tonight and tomorrow we want to try and get the details right and put our finger on what it is and how we want to move forward."

Arsenal transfer news LIVE: Gunners ‘make contact' with Rogers, Rodrygo wage demands revealed, Martinelli exit possible

Isak tipped for Arsenal Jamie O'Hara has claimed that Arsenal should sign Newcastle star Aleksander Isak over Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko. He told Grosvenor Sport: 'The obvious position to strengthen for Arsenal is a striker – they need to get one in. 'They need someone big and strong who can get them 20 goals a season. For me, Kai Havertz just isn't the man for the job. 'Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko are the obvious choices in the striker department for them. However, the trouble with strikers who come over from other leagues is that they fail to hit the ground running – particularly players from the Bundesliga and Liga Portugal. There's a massive difference between playing there and in the Premier League. 'I think clubs should be buying Premier League proven players who have been doing it week in, week out already. That's why I think Manchester United have been quite clever by signing Bryan Mbuemo and Matheus Cunha – we all know they're going to work for them. 'With that in mind, if I were Arsenal, I'd go and get Isak. I know it will be hard because Newcastle are in the Champions League, but Arsenal are a bigger club than Newcastle and could definitely tempt him.'

Transfer news LIVE: Liverpool make £113m Wirtz offer, Inter inquire about Hojlund, Spurs target Frank as new manager

Inter-ested Inter Milan are amongst the clubs looking at signing Rasmus Hojlund from Manchester United this summer. Hojlund has struggled to find form since his arrival at Old Trafford and looks set for the exit doors in the coming month. Fabrizio Romano has reiterated that Champions League finalists Inter remain keen on the 22-year-old, despite the exit of boss Simone Inzaghi this week. Hojlund managed four goals in 32 Premier League appearances this season.

TEAMSHEET: Can YOU name the Leeds side that beat Arsenal 3-2 in 2003? Or pick YOUR team and guess their starting XI

Welcome back to Teamsheet... Mail Sport's original football memory game with a twist that gives you the chance to test your football knowledge against your mates. Today, we head back to May 2003 when Arsenal were looking to chase down Manchester United in the title race as they faced a struggling Leeds United at Highbury. Against the odds, Leeds pulled off a shock 3-2 victory to all but seal the title for United, while securing their own place in the Premier League for another year. But can you name the Leeds starting XI from that day? It's just for fun, so see how you fare and share your Teamsheet score... full instructions on how to play are at the bottom of the article and in the game itself. And you can also pick any team you like and guess their starting XI. Best of luck! HOW TO PLAY The aim of the game is to score as few points as possible! If you guess a player at the first attempt you score one point - so the lowest score for guessing every player at the first attempt is 11. Guess a correct letter in the right position, and it'll turn green. Guess a correct letter but in the wrong position, and it'll turn yellow. You have six guesses for each player - and if you fail, we'll reveal their identity for 11 points! You can also ask for a free letter, but it costs you a point. So play on to see if you'll score the best possible total of 11 - or fail on every player and score 121.
