Supreme Court upholds relief to BJP MP Tejasvi Surya in criminal case
'What is this? Don't politicise the matter. Fight your battles before the electorate,' a bench comprising Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and K. Vinod Chandran said.
Mr. Surya was alleged to have disseminated fake news on a farmer's suicide in the state's Haveri district. The bench dismissed the appeal of the state government and cautioned it against the politicisation of legal proceedings.
The case stemmed from a post shared by Mr. Surya on November 7, 2024, in which he cited a report from Kannada news portals claiming that a farmer, Rudrappa Channappa Balikai, was found dead after discovering that his land had been taken over by the Waqf Board.
The post was subsequently deleted after it emerged that the claim was unfounded.

Nuns' arrest: Pamplany seeks Centre's intervention
Kannur: Thalassery Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany on Friday criticized Centre over the arrest of two Keralite nuns — Sr Vandana Francis and Sr Preethi Mary — in Chhattisgarh. Speaking to the media on the sidelines of a protest meet in Thalassery demanding justice for the nuns, Pamplany said BJP-led Chhattisgarh govt's opposition to the nuns' bail application in NIA court was condemnable and suspicious. "(Union home minister) Amit Shah's words had given us relief. But his words weren't kept in the BJP-led state (Chhattisgarh). Central govt should intervene immediately," he demanded. Some laws like anti-conversion law have been passed by some states to attack persons illegally and send them to jail, Pamplany said. "Citing the law, minority communities are being harassed. Some terror outfits are behind this. Govt should be able to handle them," he said. "If we don't get justice, we will be forced to protest on the street. The Catholic community faced many sufferings earlier too and it always strengthened the community," he added. Venugopal visits nun's family Meanwhile, AICC general secretary K C Venugopal visited Sr Vandana Francis's family at Udayagiri in Kannur. Speaking to the media after visiting the family, he alleged that the ruling-BJP and Sangh Parivar were spreading hate and divisive politics for electoral gains. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like My family & I lost S$500,000 to a scam. If BJP leaders are sincere, they would have responded on the day of arrest itself, just like they react when they distribute cakes at houses of Christians," he said. He added that charges like human trafficking and conversion slapped on the nuns were baseless. "BJP leaders in Kerala are playing drama to attract the Christian community which always stood for secularism. The community will realise BJP's double standards" said Venugopal. Church heads now realise BJP's real character: Satheesan Opposition leader V D Satheesan said Church heads have now realised BJP's real character. He said that opposition warned during Christmas 2023 that wolves in sheep's clothing were arriving at bishop houses with cakes, referring to BJP's attempt to woo Christians. "Priests themselves now say that wolves in sheep's clothing came with cakes and that no one should come with cakes and crowns any more. Nationwide, Christians are being attacked. Nuns and priests cannot travel in their religious attire. We are making efforts to release the two imprisoned nuns," he said.

AIADMK unfazed by OPS's exit from NDA; BJP says no pressure from EPS
Chennai: MDMK general secretary Vaiko dismissed speculation that his party was in talks with the BJP , stating he would never support Hindutva forces. "Speculation of MDMK quitting the DMK alliance is baseless," Vaiko told reporters here on Friday after calling on chief minister M K Stalin to check on his health. Vaiko said the MDMK will never support Hindutva forces. "We joined hands with DMK in 2021 to block BJP, RSS and other fascist forces from gaining ground in Tamil Nadu, and we will continue this position for the 2026 elections and beyond," he said. TNN You Can Also Check: Chennai AQI | Weather in Chennai | Bank Holidays in Chennai | Public Holidays in Chennai Chennai: AIADMK appears unfazed by the exit of the party's former coordinator O Panneerselvam from the NDA , while the BJP has taken a non-committal stand. The saffron party has neither criticised OPS for leaving NDA and meeting chief minister M K Stalin soon afterwards, nor has it made any public statements to woo back OPS. The party is cautious that any move to reach out to OPS would offend principal ally AIADMK. AIADMK leaders from southern TN say his exit will not dent their prospects. "His past electoral wins in five consecutive assembly elections were because of the leadership of Jayalalithaa and the Two Leaves symbol," former minister Sellur K Raju told TOI. He said symbols, party strength, and the political circumstances at that time determine the results. "This time people will decide between EPS and Stalin,'' he said. BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran adopted a softer tone. "I spoke to OPS personally before his announcement and asked him not to take this decision. I even told him that if he wanted, I would arrange a meeting with Prime Minister Modi. But despite this, he chose otherwise," Nagenthran said. On whether there was any pressure from EPS to sideline OPS during the PM's visit, Nagenthran said there was no pressure from anyone. Nagenthran said he was open to take efforts to organise a meeting with the PM if OPS wanted in future. While OPS's political clout has diminished over years, political observers feel that his exit could still have implications in southern Tamil Nadu, especially among thevars, the community to which OPS belongs to. For the BJP, his presence in the alliance mattered symbolically and strategically. Symbolically, that all the splinter groups of AIADMK were under one umbrella and strategically, the slice of Thevar votes, however thin it may be, that OPS could have brought in a tightly contested election. However, AIADMK leaders said the 'minor' dent that could be caused by OPS in the thevar belt could be offset by the presence of AMMK founder TTV Dhinakaran and state BJP chief Nainar Nagenthran, as both are thevars.
