Makwana consoled the victim's parents, C Chandrasekar and Tamil Selvi, and family members, and assured them of extending the commission's support. He was accompanied by Thoothukudi collector K Elambahavath, inspector general of police B Shamoondeswari, Tirunelveli city police commissioner Santosh Hadimani, and deputy commissioners of police V Vinoth Santharam and V Prasannakumar, among others.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu National Congress (TNCC) state secretary V S Kamalika Kamaraj, who is also the grandniece of the late Congress leader and former chief minister K Kamaraj, consoled Kavin's parents. Terming honour killing a "social malady", she urged the state government to implement a special Act to protect democracy and the future Tamil society.
In connection with the murder, Makwana held a consultation meeting at the Tirunelveli collectorate with police personnel and officials from various departments on Tuesday. The chairperson and his team of officials, including DIG Sanmeet Kaur, deputy directors Dr Dinesh Vyas and Dr R Stalin, and state director of the commission Dr S Ravivarman (Chennai), reviewed the progress of the investigation into the murder and the steps taken by the police so far. Tirunelveli collector Dr R Sukumar, Adi Dravidar Welfare officers Poongodi (Tirunelveli) and Bennet Asir (Thoothukudi), and the aforementioned police personnel attended the meeting.
On August 1, chairperson of Tamil Nadu State Commission for Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare and retired justice S Tamilvanan conducted an inquiry into the case, said Tirunelveli district administration.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran has described the nomination of Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan for the Vice Presidential race as a moment of pride for Tamils, while also turning the spotlight on the ruling DMK for its refusal to extend support. In a detailed statement, Mr Nagendran said Mr Radhakrishnan's elevation was "a recognition of Tamil Nadu's contribution to the nation," thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the NDA leadership. "Dr CP Radhakrishnan has always stood for Tamil values while serving the country. His victory will be a proud moment for every Tamil household," Mr Nagendran said. Mr Nagendran also sharpened the political edge, reminding the DMK of its earlier stand on Dr APJ Abdul Kalam's second presidential term, which it had refused to support then. "This is an opportunity for the DMK to correct its historic blunder of not supporting the re-election of our beloved son of the soil, Dr Kalam. By refusing to support another Tamil, the DMK risks once again being on the wrong side of history," he declared. The DMK, while welcoming Mr Radhakrishnan's nomination, has already ruled out support, citing ideological opposition to the BJP. But the BJP sees this as an opening - portraying the DMK as inconsistent on Tamil pride while positioning itself as the party that elevates Tamil leaders to national prominence. Mr Radhakrishnan, a two-time MP from Coimbatore, former Tamil Nadu BJP president, and currently Maharashtra Governor, enjoys cross-party goodwill, including with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin. His nomination, if it sails through, would make him the third Vice President from Tamil Nadu, after Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and R Venkataraman, who also rose to become Presidents. For the BJP, the symbolism matters. Facing sustained criticism from the DMK over alleged Hindi imposition, NEET, and fund allocation, the party is leveraging Mr Radhakrishnan's candidature to soften its image in the state and project itself as a party of inclusivity. Strategically, Mr Radhakrishnan's roots in the western region - where the BJP has a modest but growing base - add electoral weight. The region is also a stronghold of its ally AIADMK. With the BJP commanding a majority in Parliament, Mr Radhakrishnan's election is assured. But the larger battle, party insiders say, is about reshaping public perception in Tamil Nadu, where the BJP hopes to use this symbolic victory to take the DMK's dominance ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls.

Protest in Tamil Nadu against SC order on stray dogs
People came together to show their support for stray dogs in Chennai on Sunday in protest of the Supreme Court's order to remove stray dogs from public spaces in Delhi and NCR. Tamil actor Vinodhini Vaidhyanathan said that sterilisation, vaccination and neutering was the solution. 'And the dogs should be let back in the same location and feeders like us will take care of the dogs. We believe that this problem can be solved in five years,' said Vaidhyanathan. 'Dogs with rabies can be kept in shelters. Similarly aggressive dogs can be given rehabilitation. We are not against that.' The top court on August 11 had ordered for all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR to be picked up within eight weeks, directing that they be housed in dog shelters to be created by appropriate authorities. 'The Supreme Court's order is impractical and unjust,' the actor added. 'First of all there aren't enough shelters to house them all so they will die in terrible conditions.' She cited the example of how Goa controlled its dog population in the last two decades. Sai Vignesh, founder of Almighty Animal Care Trust said that the act of catching and permanently displacing dogs goes against India's own rules — Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023. 'It clearly recommends animal birth control surgery and vaccination as the only way to eradicate rabies. It has been scientifically proven in cities like Goa and Jaipur which have been recorded as 100% rabies free,' the activist said. Popular Tamil director Vasanth (who goes by a first name) protested holding a placard, 'Their Streets, Their Freedom'. 'I'm not being a devil's advocate but a dog's advocate. This planet is not just for human beings but for all living beings,' said Vasanth. 'Yes, there are dogs that bite but that doesn't mean all dogs must be captured.' He added that data showed that there are more rapes and murders and road accidents than deaths due to dog bites. 'First, it is worrying to call them street dogs. We have treated them with compassion. Encapturing them in shelters is not a solution.'

Centre-appointed Governor Ravi doing ‘cheap politics': Stalin

Stalin also accused the governor of spreading rumours about his government, 'He sits in the Raj Bhavan to spread rumours about the DMK government. He will not give approval for state schemes, he will agree to print non-existent (wrong) 'Thirukural' (couplets written by Tamil saint Thiruvalluvar), he disrespects our 'Tamil Thai Vazhthu' (Tamil anthem), he gives false information about Tamil Nadu's education, health, women's safety and law and order and stirs panic,' the CM said. Stalin's attack comes amid a heightened standoff between the governor and the Tamil Nadu government. It also comes days after Ravi, in his speech on the eve of Independence Day, expressed concerns over challenges faced by the state. Ravi had said Tamil Nadu was facing four major challenges: Educational and social discrimination of the poor and marginalised; alarming rise in suicides; fast spreading drug abuse among youth; and steep rise in rape and other sexual offences against women and girls. The DMK reacted sharply, accusing the Governor of making false allegations to malign the state government. 'Tamil Nadu is the forerunner in India. It's not just our claim, even the BJP-led Union government has released data that shows that our state is doing way better than BJP ruled states. Unable to accept this fact, he is angry and irritated, so the governor is whining against us in public events,' Stalin said. 'Tamil Nadu is the number 2 state in the school education system in India. Only because our state is peaceful, we have been able to sign ₹10-crore worth of investments in the last four years. As regards women's safety, citing National Crime Records Bureau statistics of 2022, he claimed BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh tops in crimes against women. Therefore, the governor should target BJP-ruled states, Stalin said. Stalin said Ravi should continue in Tamil Nadu 'as it is good for us'. 'He is effectively ensuring that our fire for the language, race and ideology burns bright. Let him talk, I am not bothered. I am only bothered about you, want to be truthful to you who have voted for us,' he said. During the event, the CM launched a Cooperative department initiative to provide interest-free crop loans to farmers applying online. An official release said the government had earlier announced that the pilot scheme will be launched in Dharmapuri before expanding it across the state. The effort involves disbursing the loan the same day it is applied online. The Stalin-led party and its allies had also boycotted the Governor's 'At Home' reception hosted on Independence Day.
