Nanta: East-West Highway safety works are coming

The Star13-06-2025
GERIK: The Works Ministry is preparing a road condition assessment (PCA) report to facilitate maintenance and paving work on the Gerik-Jeli route of the East-West Highway (JRTB) to be carried out soon, says its minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi (pic).
He said the PCA is being done 'according to the latest, modern and internationally applicable methods'.
'However, all the facilities and methods used depend on the allocations given, especially in building and repairing roads,' he said during a visit to the location of the bus crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students.
Nanta previously announced that the crash location was among the sections along the highway that had been identified for upgrading work this year, with an allocation of RM55mil.
The minister also said that various initiatives had been put in place since 2023 to improve the Gerik-Jeli route, especially on the FT04 federal road, Bernama reported.
He said funds totalling RM80mil were also allocated to cover 55 scopes of work under the periodic pavement maintenance programme, which aims to ensure that the route on the JRTB is in good condition.
Nanta added that RM3.58mil was allocated for the street light and signal light maintenance project involving the maintenance of traffic lights and the installation of solar lights along the JRTB, which will begin next month.
He said the installation of solar-powered lights would also involve the location of the fatal bus crash.
'This project is currently in the procurement process by the Perak Public Works Department, and is expected to be completed by the end of October,' the minister said.

How the government 'belanja the rakyat' and spent RM500 million to keep tolls down

12 Aug 2025 05:59pm Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi revealed what most road users don't realise - if the government hadn't intervened, toll rates would already be much higher this year. By instructing toll concessionaires to freeze toll hikes in 2025, the government is paying over RM500 million in compensation to these companies. Why? Because highway development and operations are bound by detailed agreements that allow for scheduled toll reviews, usually upward to help concessionaires repay private loans taken to build and maintain the highways. Good news, you save this year. Heads up - come January 2026, a toll increase might still happen! #TopNewsPodcast #AlexanderNantaLinggi #TollRates #HighwayTolls #RoadUsers #MalaysiaTolls #PublicInfrastructure #TollFreeze #TollHike #RakyatFirst #SinarDaily More Like This

No toll for motorcyclists, says Malaysian Highway Authority

The Malaysian Highway Authority has denied any plan to impose a toll on motorcycles. PETALING JAYA : Motorcyclists will continue to be exempted from paying toll, says the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM). Responding to a viral post on social media account yesterday, it confirmed the claim was false, Bernama reported. The post claimed motorcyclists would begin paying tolls this October. LLM warned that such misinformation could unnecessarily alarm motorcyclists and harm the reputation of the government, the works ministry, LLM and the affected highway concessionaires. LLM said PLUS Malaysia Berhad is at present only testing an open toll system using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology. 'If these tests prove successful, the system will be rolled out in stages across highways operated by PLUS Malaysia Berhad,' it said. The new system is expected to improve traffic flow, make it more convenient for motorists and reduce congestion at toll plazas. LLM urged the public to rely only on official updates from the relevant authorities.

Over 1,000 accident blackspots identified nationwide for safety upgrades

TUMPAT: More than 1,000 high-risk accident blackspots have been identified nationwide, according to Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. The Public Works Department (JKR) conducted a thorough review of federal roads with sharp bends, structural damage, and inadequate lighting. 'We have identified more than 1,000 accident blackspots nationwide,' said Nanta. He noted that these locations face multiple issues, including poor nighttime visibility requiring proper lighting solutions. Over 300 solar lights have already been installed along the East-West Highway (RTB) to improve safety. Additional solar lights will be placed at identified accident-prone areas and sharp bends soon. Nanta shared these updates after launching the Sri Tanjong 1 ferry at the JKR Pengkalan Kubor Ferry terminal. The event was attended by Narathiwat Deputy Governor Amirut Bua-On and Kelantan JKR director Nik Soh Yaacoub. The ministry has requested extra funding to speed up solar light installations for enhanced road safety. Regarding the new ferry, Nanta emphasised its role beyond transportation, calling it a vital link between Malaysia and Thailand. 'It facilitates movement, strengthens trade, and nurtures cultural ties and kinship,' he said. The previous Sri Tanjong ferry served reliably for 34 years before being replaced. The new Sri Tanjong 1 ferry, costing RM7.90 million, can carry 58 passengers, six crew members, and eight light vehicles or a 44-seater bus. Nanta highlighted the ferry's upgraded capacity for both passengers and heavy vehicles. 'It will support safer cross-border mobility and boost local economic growth,' he added. He also proposed preserving the old ferry as a historical monument for future generations. - Bernama
