Uranus Was Hiding a Moon Outside Its Rings

The space around Uranus just got a bit more crowded.
On Tuesday, astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope announced the discovery of a moon orbiting around the pale blue ice giant, bringing its total number of satellites to 29. The latest addition, tentatively known as S/2025 U1, is tinier and fainter than any of the planet's other known moons. That is the likely explanation for why it was missed in observations by previous telescopes or spacecraft.
'We were very happy to see it,' said Maryame El Moutamid, an astrophysicist at the Southwest Research Institute in Colorado. 'It was acting exactly like a moon.'
All four of the largest planets in our solar system have a substantial number of moons of varying sizes. In recent years, scientists have discovered additional objects orbiting Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune that are considered moons.
Several of the now 29 moons of Uranus were discovered during a flyby of NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft in 1986. But the icy world also has 13 narrow, sharply defined rings. Some astronomers believe these rings to have been sculpted by the presence of unknown 'shepherd' moons on either side, whose gravity prevents the material from spreading outward.
With the high resolution of the Webb telescope's Near-Infrared Camera, or NIRCam, Dr. El Moutamid and her team 'were almost sure that we would find plenty of moons around these rings,' she said.
The astronomers discovered S/2025 U1 in a series of images collected by the NIRCam in February. The moon was found lurking outside of the planet's brightest ring, Epsilon, between two other satellites, Ophelia and Bianca.
This moon is not a shepherd moon for the Epsilon ring, as the astronomers expected. The team estimates that it is about six miles wide, and in a nearly circular orbit some 35,000 miles away from Uranus's center. It is the 14th inner moon to be discovered orbiting the planet.
Over millions of years, Uranus's inner moons may have collided and spread out into rings. As the material in the rings diffused, they moved farther away from the planet. Eventually, that material can start to accumulate, recycling itself back into a moon.
For S/2025 U1, 'this is the most likely scenario,' Dr. El Moutamid said, adding that this process likely occurred sometime within the past 50 million years.
The astronomers are working on giving the newly discovered moon a permanent name. According to Dr. El Moutamid, they have an idea, but the name will have to go through an approval process by the International Astronomical Union. Thus far, all of Uranus's moons have been given the names of literary characters, many from the works of Shakespeare.
More Uranian moons may be found in the future with the Webb telescope. But they will likely be even smaller than S/2025 U1, Dr. El Moutamid said.
Uranus remains one of the least explored planets in our solar system. Learning about its moons — if their orbits are in sync, how they influence each other and what relationship they have with the planet's rings — can help astronomers better understand the evolution of the ice giant in our solar system. Many astronomers see it as a close analog for many exoplanets around other stars. That means studying Uranus may also offer insight for many worlds beyond our solar system.
Uranus 'is just waiting for us to know more about it,' Dr. El Moutamid said. 'We need to go there, study it, to better understand our universe.'

That insect can then acquire the parasite and spread it to other people. According to the C.D.C., the United States eliminated malaria in the early 1950s. Each year, about 2,000 people return home from international travel with malaria infections. After 20 years without a report of a locally acquired case in the United States, nine cases were reported to the C.D.C. in Arkansas, Florida and Texas in 2023. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and a local mosquito-control program in Morris County, which is about 35 miles west of New York City, are collecting mosquitoes for testing. New 'tiny' moon found orbiting Uranus, bringing satellite family to 29

A team at the NASA has discovered a new moon orbiting Uranus, and this one is even smaller than the others. A team led by the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) discovered the moon on Feb. 2. They made the discovery using NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, which the space agency says is the largest, most powerful telescope ever launched into space. The newly-discovered moon, called S/2025 U1, is about 6 miles in diameter, NASA said, calling it "tiny." Its discovery brings Uranus' total satellite family to 29. "This object was spotted in a series of 10 40-minute long-exposure images captured by the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam)," said Maryame El Moutamid, a Colorado-based lead scientist from SwRI, in a news release. "It's a small moon but a significant discovery, which is something that even NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft didn't see during its flyby nearly 40 years ago." According to NASA, the NIRCam used to detect the new moon has high resolution and infrared sensitivity that allows it to pick up faint, distant objects. Where is the new 'tiny' moon? Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun, and the third-largest planet in our solar system, according to NASA. It is a cold, windy planet that is surrounded by faint rings. The planet differs from the others because it has more small inner moons, Matthew Tiscareno, who is on the research team that discovered the moon, said in the news release. "The new moon is smaller and much fainter than the smallest of the previously known inner moons, making it likely that even more complexity remains to be discovered," Tiscareno said. The new moon, Moon S/2025 U1, is located about 35,000 miles from Uranus' center, between the orbits of Ophelia and Bianca. It is the 14th small moon orbiting inward of these larger moons, NASA said. While Uranus now has a total of 29 moons, NASA said five of them are considered major moons: Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania and Oberon. Moons on Uranus are often called the literary moons because they are named after Shakespearean characters, as well as characters from titles by the English author Alexander Pope. Before the new moon gets an official name of its own, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) will need to approve it, according to the news release. Starship launches could delay Florida flights up to 2 hours, FAA says

As regulators weigh SpaceX's plans to launch its massive Starship rocket from Kennedy Space Center, federal documents warn those flights could ripple through Florida airspace, forcing ground stops at multiple airports, reroutes, and delays of up to two hours. Even after launch, reentry of Starship's two stages could require ground stops at some of the busiest airports in the country, according to a draft environmental impact statement (EIS) released by the Federal Aviation Administration this month. Florida airports affected by the launches may include Orlando International, Miami International, Tampa International, and Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International. Average delays could be as long as 40 minutes to 2 hours for launches and Super Heavy booster landings, and 40 minutes to one hour for Starship reentries. Diversions and cancellations are possible, the FAA said in a companion slide deck. To manage risk, the FAA would establish Aircraft Hazard Areas (AHAs) over potentially impacted zones, as it does for commercial space launches today. Depending on the Starship flight trajectory, those zones could overlay routes above the Atlantic, parts of the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and airspace in several Central American countries. 'AHAs may necessitate the closure of dozens of coastal and deep-water oceanic airways over the Atlantic Ocean, requiring substantial aircraft rerouting to avoid the AHAs,' the draft EIS says regarding Starship launches. Tampa International Airport spokesperson Emily Nipps told TechCrunch the airport has not been involved in any briefings or procedural planning with the FAA or SpaceX, so far. However, a day after TechCrunch sent its inquiries to the relevant airports and the FAA, Nipps said the airport was informed it would be having those discussions 'soon.' A spokesperson for Miami International said they have not received any briefings on possible ground stops. SpaceX has been launching its flagship Falcon rockets from the Florida coast for years, and that cadence has sharply increased since 2020. Despite launching over 80 Falcon rockets from the Eastern Range last year, these launches don't typically interrupt commercial airlines. But the Falcon rockets are substantially different from Starship: Falcon's smaller size means a smaller possible footprint for debris in the case of an anomaly, and the Falcon launches are at this point predictable and mature. Starship is in a much earlier stage of development, with vehicles still occasionally blowing up during both ground tests and orbital flights. Indeed, the draft EIS notes that the size of airspace closures may vary with each Starship mission, and that it could shrink as the vehicle becomes more reliable. An FAA spokesperson said the agency has already engaged with aviation organizations, and worked with SpaceX to develop notional launch and reentry trajectories. Prior to launch, the agency will also distribute a final Airspace Management Plan. The FAA relies on a number of factors, including the number of affected passengers, launch window duration, and major holidays when determining when a space launch can proceed, the spokesperson added. Starship is SpaceX's next-generation launch system designed for travel to the Moon and Mars. The 400-foot-tall rocket is composed of two stages: an upper stage, also called Starship, and a Super Heavy booster. Both stages are designed to be fully reusable and rapidly refurbished for high-cadence satellite delivery and missions to deep space. Today, SpaceX conducts all Starship launch activities from Starbase in south Texas. But the company is looking to expand operations to NASA's Kennedy Space Center, prompting the environmental review. That review is conducted by the FAA in cooperation with NASA, the Air Force, the Fish and Wildlife Service, and other federal agencies. The draft EIS analyzes up to 44 Starship launches per year, which could include up to 44 Super Heavy booster landings and 44 Starship landings. Super Heavy could land back at LC-39A, the launch pad at KSC, on a droneship, or be expended in the Atlantic. Starship landings could likewise occur at the pad, on a ship, or as water splashdowns with recovery in the Atlantic, Pacific, or Indian Oceans. The FAA said in the draft EIS that while temporary airspace closures may impact commercial airlines and other stakeholders, 'mitigation strategies such as pre-coordinated reroutes, dynamic scheduling, and time-based traffic flow management could reduce operational burdens.' Today, FAA uses a prototype tool called Space Data Integrator, which ingests real-time flight data from SpaceX and other operators to shrink the amount of time airspace is closed. The regulator says it wants to develop more tools to beef out its situational awareness capability, and each time Starship launches it will get more data on its operations. The U.S. Space Force is running a parallel environmental review at neighboring Cape Canaveral Space Force Base that analyzes up to 76 annual Starship launches. While the draft EIS for that site states Starship launches would result in airspace closures, it says details of the closures are not yet known because the site is expected to take months to prepare.
