Jeffery Simmons returns; no L'Jarius Sneed at Tennessee Titans' minicamp
The Tennessee Titans are starting their final mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, and have kicked off the sessions with head coach Brian Callahan addressing the media. While he outlined the goals for the three-day session, he also passed on some interesting nuggets.
One of the first topics he addressed was one that should make the Titans beat writers in Nashville happy: defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons will practice with the team after skipping out on the voluntary portion of Phase 3 activities. From the outset, Callahan stated his absence was a non-issue, but as happens in media circles, the story grew legs and blossomed into more than it should have.
Not only will Simmons be back in the fold, but some of the older veterans on the roster will see an increase in reps during this final set of practices. Veteran free agent acquisitions Kevin Zeitler and Tyler Lockett were specifically mentioned during the media availability and will likely see more reps once the team moves to team periods.
One person who will not be participating in the minicamp is cornerback L'Jarius Sneed, who is still nursing the calf/knee injury that forced him to miss most of the 2024 campaign. Callahan stated that the Titans are optimistic that Sneed will be ready to go for training camp and will let the rehab guide him.
Other than Sneed, all other members of the Titans should see the field in some capacity during minicamp. These are big steps forward for Treylon Burks, Lloyd Cushenberry, Kalel Mullings, and Kevin Winston Jr., who have all been recovering from injuries throughout the offseason. That's especially important for Cushenberry, who has been working his way back from tearing his Achilles during the 2024 season. Tennessee is counting on him to be ready for the season to anchor their new-look offensive line.

Titans embrace Callahan's competition hoping to boost performance, accountability and wins

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Drop a ball, lose points. A red zone touchdown catch isn't worth six but still nets points. Jump offside earns a deduction. Lose a wide receiver in coverage also hurts. The Tennessee Titans don't kick off coach Brian Callahan's second season until Sept. 7 at Denver. With the Titans going 3-14 and losing the final six games, Callahan made some changes all designed to help Tennessee win more in 2025. The biggest new offseason feature is an internal competition. Callahan broke up the Titans into eight teams with a captain and assistant with rankings updated daily. Teams earn — or lose — points for what they do particularly on the field. For pro athletes, that's all they needed to hear. Outside linebacker Dre'Mont Jones, an offseason free agent signee going into his seventh NFL season, said Wednesday that the Titans are '100%' bought into Callahan's offseason competition. Jones said everything they do is a competition, keeping energy high. 'We need that competition,' Jones said. 'We have a young football team. We need to keep that edge and that competitive (approach) throughout the whole entire offseason leading into the season.' Tennessee lost six games in Callahan's debut season by eight points or fewer. Combined with a roster stocked with 48 new players, this competition is designed to have the Titans hold each other accountable for mistakes including turnovers, penalties and mental errors that prove so costly in an NFL season. Callahan knows this won't show results that matter until September and October at the earliest. This is all part of his focus on doing everything possible for the Titans to be better. 'A lot of it was kind of through this offseason program that we developed and how do we best win football games? And how do I best put our team in position to do that? How do I coach that better? And how do I do a better job from a leadership perspective for our players and our staff?' Callahan said. Jones is on a team captained by running back Tony Pollard who likes how Callahan also mixed up assignments in the locker room. No longer are position groups sitting together. Wide receiver Calvin Ridley is next to rookie quarterback Cam Ward. 'You got to talk to different guys, get to know people throughout the locker room,' said Pollard, who now has cornerback L'Jarius Sneed and defensive lineman Keondre Coburn to the right. 'So it's just, it's a great thing just connecting with the whole team.' That talking isn't done just inside the locker room. Part of the schedule includes time for each group to get to know each other better by discussing four H's: history, heroes, hopes and heartbreaks. 'That's just a great thing just learning backstories, what guys have been through and what they've had to overcome to be where they are now,' Pollard said. Callahan hasn't shared what the rewards will be for the winners. It doesn't matter. Linebacker Cody Barton, who signed a three-year deal in March, joked that he heard winners got a car and asked for that to be confirmed. A pat on the back also works. Right guard Kevin Zeitler is another newcomer going into his 14th NFL season. He said every NFL team has its own approach to the offseason program with some business-like, others 'super competitive and fiery' with others making it fun. 'Having an extra competition throughout the day to be more on your details. ... it makes it more fun,' Zeitler said. Treylon Burks working Callahan said Treylon Burks, the Titans' 18th pick overall in 2022 as part of the A.J. Brown trade, is doing more in his rehab from a partially torn ACL that limited him to five games and four catches last season. Burks is doing more than Callahan expected at the beginning of the offseason program. Burks is doing more individual drills and routes. Callahan said the hope is Burks will be cleared by the start of training camp. ___ AP NFL:

'Jump to conclusions': Wally Lewis responds to Broncos fans demands over Maguire

Queensland legend Wally Lewis has warned Brisbane Broncos fans to temper their expectations for the 2025 season having suggested a number of fans were disgruntled with Michael Maguire even though they won on the weekend. In Adam Reynolds' 300th NRL game, the Broncos responded to a number of poor results having hammered the Titans 44-14 at Suncorp Stadium. While the Broncos had lost six of their last seven clashes heading into the clash, the team responded well with Reece Walsh's return helping ignite the attack. Maguire also bowed to pressure having eventually moved Patrick Carrigan back to lock, pushing Kobe Hetherington to the bench. The Broncos looked like a desperate team fighting for their position in the top eight and club legend Darren Lockyer suggested the game would have been a huge "A pressure a bit of pressure the stage was set for then to perform," Lockyer said on QLDER show. "And they did that first half. And hopefully it puts a bit of fun going to work. Because when you are losing it's no fun. They are going into a bye now, I think the key for the Broncos is to back that performance up." However, Lewis felt the message coming from the Broncos fan base is not helping the club. The Queensland legend said he spoke to a number of fans after the game and the consistent message was supporters were not sold on Maguire's reform so far. Although the Broncos great has called for patience with the rebuild. "And it was on the street I was asked by a number of people about Michael Maguire," Lewis said on the show. "'This bloke, surely he can't be a good coach for our to get rid of him already'. Boy, I was thinking you jump to conclusions already, and you are expecting him to take Rome in a day. So, it was remarkable how quickly that had set in." Maguire made a number of changes for the Titans win on Saturday, but the biggest decision was dropping Selwyn Cobbo. Despite having jumped between wing and fullback in 2025, Maguire opted to replace Cobbo with Josiah Karapani against the Titans. And Karapani repaid the faith from his coach having made 15 runs for 176 metres, as well as three tackle breaks and two line breaks. The 23-year-old, who'd only played 11 games in first grade before Saturday night, doubled his career try tally and looked every bit an NRL player. He vindicated coach Michael Maguire's decision to bring him in to replace Cobbo, after also getting the nod over regular first-grader Deine Mariner. Cobbo was spotted at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night, and helped the team run through their warmup drills. While Cobbo was linked to the South Sydney Rabbitohs, this was shut down on Wednesday. Lockyer also suggested the return of Ben Hunt will also hand Maguire a boost heading into the schedule after State of Origin Game 2. Hunt will most likely return as the No.9 with Ezra Mam slotting into the No.6 role while he has been injured. This means Maguire will make further changes to his side with his return expected any week. Hunt will most likely start with either Corey Paix or Billy Walters dropping out of the side completely. "I think Paix and Billy have been good, particularly on the weekend," Lockyer added. "I think they have been complimenting each other very well. When Hunt comes back, Madge has indicated he is going to No.9, it just depends who is going to partner him."

Jeffery Simmons arrives at Titans' minicamp 20 pounds lighter

Titans defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons spent the offseason away from the team facility, training on his own. Simmons showed up for the team's mandatory minicamp this week, and he arrived 20 pounds lighter. It's no wonder coach Brian Callahan didn't worry about Simmons' absence. Simmons weighed in at 301 pounds Tuesday. 'I feel great,' Simmons said, via Jim Wyatt of the team website. 'I feel light on my feet, and I still feel very explosive.' Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson started a tradition last year of asking players who miss the offseason program to do up-downs upon their return. Simmons admits he was winded. But he said it was 'great' to be back with his teammates. 'It's great to be back on the field with the guys, getting to work with the guys,' Simmons said. 'It's not always an easy decision, making the decision not to be here with your teammates, especially with a lot of new guys. . . . But I made that decision. It was a personal decision. But today was a good day, and I was glad to be back.' Simmons is under contract in Tennessee through the 2027 season and he made his third Pro Bowl after the 2024 season.
