Incoming Freshman Forward Ready to Do Whatever It Takes to Help Michigan State Basketball
A lot can be expected of you when you go to play basketball for Coach Tom Izzo. That is no different whether you're highly rated or just a walk-on. Cam Ward has all the talent to become the next historically great player for Michigan State basketball.

He's got the intangibles and the stats across all categories to back it up. You're talking about a kid who is the state of Maryland's all-time leading scorer. That says a lot given how many incredibly successful basketball players have come from the DMV area.

Not to mention, he led Largo High School to back-to-back State Championships. Coach Izzo knew what he was getting in Ward, so much so that he was there when Cam set that scoring mark back in early March.
Plenty of time has passed since he did so, but as Ward prepares to make his way officially to East Lansing in less than two months, he was a special guest on Michigan State's 247 Sports recruiting specialist and host of the Spartan Spotlight Podcast with Justin Thind for an exclusive interview this past weekend.
The pair talked about plenty of things, including where Ward feels like he fits in for the Spartans next season.

Ward wasn't afraid to say that he's ready to bring whatever he can to help the Spartans build off their Big Ten Championship and try his best to help get the Spartans back to the final four, especially after seeing this past team fall just short.
"Just an all-around guy, do whatever the team needs to try and get wins," Ward said when asked about what he thinks Spartan fans can expect from him.
He certainly sounds like a very confident guy, and that could bode well for MSU basketball. Confident young players have been a good thing for Coach Izzo, just look how special Jase Richardson was in 2024-25. Cam Ward is oozing with confidence.

Suns hire Jordan Ott - why it's no surprise

Yahoo Sports contributing NBA writer Tom Haberstroh and NBA writer Dan Devine discuss Phoenix's choice to be its new head coach and why governor Mat Ishbia's ties to Michigan State may have played a role in the decision. Hear the full conversation on 'The Big Number' and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript Look man, when they did that coaching search, and they had a list of like 25 candidates, and I, I literally said, is there one that went to Michigan State? Advertisement cause that person is getting the job. And sure enough, not to discredit Jordan not, he's been around the league for a long time, but like the way that Matt Isa has run this team, selecting Brian Gregory, a former college coach to be his GM. Michigan State assistant coach to be his GM, it reminds me of the Charlotte Hornets under Michael Jordan when he hired Mitch Kupchak, former Chapel Hill guy, uh, UNC guy, Mitch Mitch Kupchak to be his GM and Buzz Peterson, Michael Jordan's roommate at college to be the assistant GM. It just feels like that recipe of of. Of hiring your buddies, hiring your college buddies, isn't necessarily a recipe for success, but it is something you can do as an owner. Advertisement Like, you pay $4 billion for this team. You want to take care of your guys, your buddies, you're more than welcome to do that. That is within your right. I just don't think that that is necessarily a recipe for success. And we've already seen. That Kevin Durant is reportedly gonna be shot this summer and might be on the trade block. It's not the first time that like friends have hired friends into the front office. We just saw over there in in in Utah that Danny Ainge, the CEO of the Utah Jazz, are hiring Austin Ainge, his son, to run the basketball ops for the team. So like keeping things all in the family, that's always been true in the NBA previous to the Jordan not higher. Advertisement The Phoenix Suns went with Monty Williams, who brought them to an NBA Finals. They went with Frank Vogel, who won an NBA championship. They went with Mike Budenhouser, who won an NBA championship. None of that worked, so why not get a guy who went to the same school as you? Like, if, if we're, if we're the, the process of going, like, we need somebody with championship experience, if that's not panning out, then try something different. Who knows? I I don't know, 40 year old guy with some good references and who went to the same school as me. Sure, what the hell? Why not? Let's give it a shot. Devin Booker, you like him? Advertisement Great. Sounds tremendous. Uh, you know, who knows? Uh, the, the, the process and the and the, the approach in the last few years in Phoenix has left something to be desired, a different process. Sure, why not? Tough stuff over there in Phoenix, but, uh, congrats to Jordan not on the, on the gig, uh, curious to see how that goes.

Michigan State picks up commitment from 3-star CB KJ Deriso of Fayetteville, Ga. Michigan State football added to its 2026 class on Friday afternoon thanks to a commitment from a cornerback prospect from SEC country. KJ Deriso of Fayetteville, Ga. announced his commitment to Michigan State on Friday, becoming the Spartans' seventh commitment in the 2026 class. ESPN FPI gives Michigan State near zero percent chance of reaching College Football Playoff

ESPN FPI gives Michigan State near zero percent chance of reaching College Football Playoff Each P4 Team's Chance to Make CFP 🏈 (via ESPN FPI) — CFB Tracker (@MatchupTracker) June 6, 2025 Michigan State football has been given a near zero percent chance of reaching the College Football Playoff in 2025 by one metric system. While the betting odds are posted at +1800 for Michigan State to make the 2025 College Football Playoff (which isn't as high as I personally would have thought), ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI) is giving the Spartans essentially no chance of reaching the playoff. ESPN's FPI rating system gives the Spartans a 1% chance of reaching the College Football Playoff this year -- which is one of the lowest of all the power four teams. Per ESPN's FPI, these are the only power four teams with a lower percentage to reach the College Football Playoff: Oklahoma State (0.9%) Vanderbilt (0.9%) West Virginia (0.8%) Mississippi State (0.7%) Arizona (0.5%) Stanford (0.5%) Syracuse (0.5%) Houston (0.3%) Northwestern (0%) Purdue (0%) Wake Forest (0%) FPI is a predictive rating system used by ESPN to measure and project the strength of college football teams. These ratings take a lot of things into consideration and can help predict how things will play out this fall. While I'm not expecting a College Football Playoff run for the Spartans in 2025, I would personally give them a much higher chance than 1% of making it happen. I wrote recently how there is a path for the Spartans to be this year's Indiana and reach the College Football Playoff, and I simply wouldn't have written that article if I thought it was a 1% chance of happening. So with all due respect to ESPN's FPI ratings, I'm going to pass on these odds and give the Spartans more of a fighting chance of shocking the college football world in 2025.
