Witness: I was tasked with delivering RM2mil bribe to Guan Eng
Businessman G. Gnanaraja said the bribe was linked to the Penang Undersea Tunnel project, where he was appointed by Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd (CZCSB) director Datuk Zarul Ahmad Mohd Zulkifli to act as a middleman to deliver the money to Lim.
CZCSB was the company awarded the RM6.34 billion Penang undersea tunnel project.
The DAP chairman who sat in the accused dock was calm while listening to Gnanaraja's testimony before Sessions Court judge Azura Alwi.
Gnanaraja said that between Aug 10 and 19, 2017, he and Zarul had multiple discussions about appointing him as the intermediary to deliver bribes to Lim.
He said Zarul chose him based on trust and because he was not affiliated with any opposition parties at the time.
Gnanaraja also revealed that he had used his company, Bumi Muhibah Holding Sdn Bhd, as the vehicle to channel bribe payments to Lim, as he was the sole person authorised to withdraw money from its bank account.
"All the requests to set up the company and its account were made while I was with Lim in a car on the way to Publika on Aug 20, 2017.
"Lim had personally viewed the company's Form 49 during a visit to my house on Aug 29, the same year.
"He wanted to see the document to gain personal confidence in the company's management and the preparation of its documents.
"Form 49 contained details of the company's directors, managers, and secretary," he said.
Meanwhile, Gnanaraja said on Aug 18, 2017, he received RM2 million in cash from Zarul near Eastin Hotel in Petaling Jaya for the purpose of delivering it to Lim.
"When I reached the hotel lobby, my driver parked my Bentley in front of Zarul's grey Mercedes S300.
"Zarul, dressed in a white shirt and black trousers, then stepped out of his car, retrieved two dark-coloured bags with hand straps, and placed them directly into the boot of my car.
"I knew the bags contained cash because as he placed the first bag, he said '1M,' and repeated the same as he placed the second. By '1M,' I understood that he meant RM1 million.
"When I arrived home, I transferred both bags into my office room. I saw that the bags contained bundles of RM100 cash notes in large quantities.
"I did not count the bundles in either of the two bags," he said.
However, the trial was cut short after Gnanaraja began coughing severely and said he was feeling unwell.
On June 24, 2022, Zarul, when testifying as witness, admitted that he gave Lim RM2 million in cash after his company was awarded the three paired roads and undersea tunnel project by the Penang government.
On the delivery of RM2 million to Lim, Zarul said he contacted Gnanaraja and told him that he wanted to give some "chocolates" to "big boss" on Aug 17, 2017.
He said apart from the RM2 million cash, he also paid Lim a total of RM300,000 in three stages and RM500,000 twice as part of the 10 per cent cut from the profit of the project.
Lim is facing four charges of using his position as the then Penang chief minister to solicit gratification to help Zarul's company secure the undersea tunnel project.
He was alleged to have sought 10 per cent of the profit to be made by the company from Zarul.
He was also accused of receiving RM3.3 million for himself and causing two plots of land belonging to the state government to be disposed of to two companies linked to the undersea tunnel project.
The trial is set to resume on Aug 19.

MOF Warns of RM100 SARA Aid Scam Links
The Finance Ministry (MOF) has clarified that recipients of the one-off RM100 SARA aid do not need to register, amid growing concerns over scam links and misinformation spreading online. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said the aid will be automatically credited to all eligible MyKad holders aged 18 and above starting Aug 31, and any claims that users must sign up through online portals are false and potentially dangerous. 'We've received numerous inquiries and complaints about fake websites and links related to RM100 Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) aid registration. 'Let me be clear, these are scams. Do not click on or share them,' Lim emphasised, while stressing that no application is needed as the aid will be directly credited to recipients' MyKad. On July 23, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that a one-off RM100 SARA cash aid that will be credited via MyKad to all Malaysians aged 18 and above. This part of broader Madani government initiatives, which also include toll hike postponements and a RON95 fuel price cut to RM1.99 per litre later this year. Lim added that in the event eligible individuals do not receive the payment by Aug 31, the government will provide follow-up information and guidance. Meanwhile, Lim also revealed that the government is reviewing proposals to include wet goods such as chicken, fish and meat under the SARA programme. 'The consideration is part of ongoing efforts to align the programme with real consumer needs, especially among lower-income households. 'We're open to feedback. Any expansion will be thoroughly studied in consultation with relevant stakeholders, including the recipients themselves,' she said. As of May 1, the SARA programme covers 14 categories of essential goods, including food, medicine, hygiene products, school supplies and household cleaning items, amounting to over 90,000 eligible products nationwide. Pahang youth who used fake gun to scare man among 26 doing community service
KUALA LUMPUR: Aidil (not his real name) admits he lost his temper when he brandished a replica gun during an argument with a man whom he said had been very rude to his mother. "I only wanted to scare him into thinking I would shoot him after he used very course language and was very rude to my mum. "I didn't actually want to shoot him," said the 20-year-old, who was sentenced to 240 hours community service for the incident last year. Aidil is one 26 people serving their community service orders today at the 2025 Beret Community Service Order Programme at the Civil Defence Force's (APM) Pahang headquarters. He said he was working as a security guard in Bentong at the time of the incident, and did not expect the brash decision would land him in trouble. "The pistol could fire only metal pellets. I bought it for RM300. I had no intention of hurting the man. I only wanted to scare him, nothing more. "I did not expect to be arrested by police just hours after the incident, charged in court and eventually sentenced to 240 hours of community service," he said. Aidil was charged with possession of a replica firearm and making criminal threats. He must complete his community service within two years under the supervision of the Pahang Social Welfare Department. Pahang Social Welfare Department director Khairul Amri Ahmad said there were 52 people in the state, including children, youths and adults, who are under community service orders. He said today's programme was designed to build inner strength, discipline and resilience, as well as helping them to develop physically, emotionally, spiritually and mentally in facing life's challenges. Khairul Amr added that those involved had committed various offences, including theft, sexual offences, traffic violations, rape, drug offences, threats, abuse and illegal street racing. Aidil's lapse in judgment in dealing with life's challenges is not unique, even among among older and supposedly more mature people. Forty-year-old Aida (not her real name) said that the extreme stress of living in Kuala Lumpur drove her to abuse her 18-month-old niece, which left bruises on the child's back. "The hardship of living in a cramped room made it difficult for me to control myself, and I ended up hitting the child. "At the time, I was also caring for my four children, aged 1 to 14. "I never imagined that when the child was taken to the hospital for seizures, the doctor would discover bruises on her back, which led to a police case. "The damage was done, and I was sentenced to 240 hours of community service," said Aida, who now lives in Cameron Highlands. For Salmah, 19, from Temerloh, she became involved in a mule account syndicate last year, which resulted in legal consequences when police traced a deposit of RM2,000 made by an individual into her bank account. "My advice to young people is to be extra cautious when sharing bank account details to prevent misuse by scam syndicates.

Better deal for media urged

PENAMPANG: The Ministry of Communications has called on all media clubs across the country to collect detailed data on the salaries of media practitioners in their respective states. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the information is crucial before the matter can be brought forward for discussion in the near future. 'I have instructed the coalition of media clubs in each state to gather data so the ministry can have a clear picture of the actual situation, especially regarding salaries. 'We're aware that this salary issue is not limited to Sabah. That's why we need to understand the situation across the board,' he said. He said that media professionals include both full-time journalists and part-time contributors or stringers, and any review must take these categories into account. Fahmi was responding to questions on the low wages faced by several long-serving media practitioners in Sabah, many of whom reportedly still earn less than RM2,000 per month. He was speaking after presenting aid under the Kasih@Hawana Fund to Vicky Sylvester Matanjang, a photographer with the Sabah Information Department, who was seriously injured in a road accident in March. Vicky, who has served the department for 18 years since 2007, suffered fractures to six left ribs and his left arm, and now requires ongoing physiotherapy. Earlier, Bernama Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin also presented contributions to Hafizul Andie Zulkarnain, 35, a journalist with Sabah News, who recently underwent surgery following complications from a twisted intestine and a ruptured appendix. When asked if additional funding would be allocated for the Kasih@Hawana Fund this year, Fahmi said the ministry would first utilise the remaining funds from two previous Hawana programmes, amounting to RM1 million, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last year. 'We've requested Bernama to explore mechanisms to raise more funds for media practitioners, but for now, we need to exhaust the current allocation,' he said. The Kasih@Hawana Fund, an initiative by the Ministry of Communications and managed by Bernama, was launched in conjunction with National Journalists Day 2023. It reflects the government's empathy and appreciation for the media's role in society.
